I Know what it says!

Yes, that is what I was saying.

I can't see them removing the text that is already there:

Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China Model No: #####
FCC ID: ######## Serial No.: ########### IMEI No.: ###############

What would they remove? The only thing that wouldn't be on this one if it is a prototype or a testing model may be the FCC ID #, since it most likely hasn't been approved by the FCC yet, so it wouldn't have that number on it.

Maybe that's all that is missing?

Or maybe whoever made or photoshopped this didn't want to put their IMEI or serial number on it, but still wanted to make sure it was centered.

Maybee it says:
Designed by Apple in California Assembled in United States of America Model No: 3gfone
FCC ID: 12345678 Serial No.: w1234887554 IMEI No.: 123123123123123

Maybe Apple leaked it, but to cast doubt, they processed it through photoshop and gave it all the elements of a fake. It's about the size of the current iPhone but rounder/slimmer on the sides. Very typical of Apple to do on hardware updates. The reflection at the top fits with the MBP's screen. and the bottom has reflection of a person. I think this is real.

Yeah because 4G is so everywhere and widely adopted and... oh, wait, it's not. Thanks for playing, try again.

Like all technologies things come in incremental steps. What good would putting 4G in a phone where there's minimal coverage and the parts are more expensive. Me personally, would rather not get hit with extra wallet punch for what isn't widely available technology in my iPhone, thanks.

Don't get me wrong, 4G is going to put wireless data close to a par with WiFi with obviously more dense coverage, but it's rollout is going slowly in test markets. Cell phones (loosely, 1G), were in test markets as well, took a couple years to work out the kinks.

Not to mention you're jumping over 3.5G (HSDPA/UPA) though for that I'll concede Apple should probably just go 3G and hop to 4G when it's more ubiquitous (which it's far from currently) when it's more available.

T-Mobile has run into all types of issue backhauling (term for trying to make 4G run on 3G networks where necessary), their data structures are radically different (IP verses parallel communications) you clearly have no idea the timeline, check out some infoworld or other telecommunication publications who get down and dirty with this stuff, it's going to make 3G on 2G seem like pong to playing UT4 in complexity. When 4G because a defacto standard, yes, free at least, free at last, but thinking it's just some switch to flip isn't just offbased, it's ill-informed and downright foolish.

all i'm saying is that it took them a while to get on the 3G bandwagon. they should have made it 3G from the get-go. i am well aware that we won't see 4G products for a while, probably a couple years, but by the time we actually get a 3G iphone, 4G phones will be well in the works, and manufacturers will all be touting their 4G hype. if they want to stay competitive in this market, they should be ahead of the pack. it is true in their computer business, so why not with the phones? if apple dropped a 4G phone before anyone else they would have an advantage. and yes, i know the network doesn't really exist yet for the public, but it would be in their best interest to be one of the first to release a 4G product. and yeah, i also am aware that they can't release a phone if no network exists for it, but pushing the envelope is what apple has always said it was about, and the USA could use a lot of help pushing the wireless networks up to speed with the rest of the world.

...or the image was compressed/color corrected for the web in Photoshop.

I think Apple intended to usurp the entire market from the beginning and was attempting to create a 3G device form the get-go. But they couldn't get power management right, or maybe the battery tech to accomplish reasonable usage or cost wasn't available, so they settled to release 2.75G. Besides, their biggest competitor, RIM, didn't have any (decent) 3G device at the time anyhow. The 3G 8707 was an afterthought. 4G/LTE is still 2-3 years away to fully mature. Plenty of development time for that.

Why would Apple go through all that garbage?! Why would they want to cast doubt!?! I would get pissed if this was one of Apple's little behind the scene schemes! Still highly doubt it's real.

Let me set this streight... If this was a real leaked photo, Apple would have pulled it from thr net. Period. They would NOT leak it themselves for any reason. Apple take leaks seriously, when they were doing the iPhone (before it was announced) the hardware and software departments worked completley sepratly, they didnt share any infomation or anything, all in the interest of secracy.

I agree.

Ah, but do you remember when Gear Live got hold of the 1.1.3 firmware, took pictures of it and made a video about it? Apple didn't seem to do anything there.

some thoughts:

multiple dummy models were distributed to apple internal staff prior to the release of the first one, very few people knew what it was actually going to look like. this photo looks real to me, but it may not be the final model for our 3g iphone. (it may even be one of the v1 iphones that didn't make the cut)

I agree, remember apple stating they have VERY accurate mock-ups or something similar to this comment when discussing their design approach to products. This could very well be a V1 mock-up. Wasn't that the time frame when apple was shifting to aluminum anyways? Maybe the curved edges were the original approach, but they needed more room when the final mock-up was created.

I'd say it's at the very least physically real, if not the actual 3G iPhone. I don't think it's doctored.

People are overanalyzing it. The shadow/highlight on the logo looks pretty normal to me. The "speckled" look is because it's just a low-quality photo. It doesn't look like it was doctored onto a photo of a MacBook Pro. And what's wrong with releasing an 8 GB iPhone? It could be at a very low price point, or maybe this is a very preliminary prototype. It's not necessarily the finished product. IMO, I think it looks great and anyone who screams "Apple would never design such an ugly piece of crap" is just overreacting. We all came to love the iMac keyboard, the square iPod nano, and other things that people originally screamed bloody murder at. The only reason some people don't like it now is because they think it's fake. I'd love to see their faces when/if Apple does actually release this thing. They'll end up loving it.

Oh I can think of a number of reasons for WHY Apple would try and leak this.

a) They would leak it to create Hype again. Do you think they really didn't know it will be ready in 6 months, or that they did NOT already have it ready on January 2007 when they announced it? They could have just announced it a month before, but they decided to do a big production and release it officially. This is purely to pump up the hype.

b) They can't do the same thing THIS time because then nobody will buy the current gen iPhone. What they CAN do is have rumors floating around about the 3G one coming, which everybody already know will happen. However, if that leak is confirmed, the same problem still exist, people will stop buying the current one. By adding PS data on the document, it casts reasonable doubt.

c) If they pulled the Photo, it would confirm that it is real and it bugged them to have it floating on the web. By leaving it in the open, they accomplish point b) above.

I just realized something, this Might not be a 3G iPhone for another reason, it might be an iPhone nano - as per cleanup's comment. The rounder/sleeker curve would mean thinner/smaller battery, which might be a problem for 3G. But I still think this photo is real. There would be no reason why this can't be an iPhone nano, and it would still throw the community into a huge massive debate on web forums about the iPhone 3G and create the hype they want. Two birds with one brick. :p

Good points, Ryan!

I hope it is a iPhone Nano, I would buy one of those definatly!

That would also explain why its only 8GB.

Also a very good point :D

OK, so thats obviously not it, but I hope they come up with one, or at least a cheaper version for your avarage non-rich guy :p

yes i can see them doing a non-internet iphone (nano) to keep their music market share as people get integrated pmp/phones, if anything they will be forced to do this, a lot of people couldnt care less about internet but would love an ipod/phone, price plans could then be cheaper or pre-pay for such a devise.

I don't think they'd get rid of the internet, that's one of the main selling points.

one of the main selling points to the smart phone iphone, but the media player market is what apple needs to prioritize as its still half there income, and a LOT of ipod customers are teens, teens that cannot get contracts, a lot of people like the iphone but say i dont need the internet all the time but they do like to have a media player and a phone in one. Im not saying theyd loose the internet off of the main iphone.
