Not sure if this is documented, but you can invoke Voice Control from the Apple earbuds by just holding down the center (skip song) button for about 1.5 seconds.

I don't have my 3GS phone yet, so I'm wondering can you say "Play song" rather then "Play artist" or "Play album"?

The voice control works great for calling people... however it's absolutely horrible for controlling the iPod. I seriously couldn't get it to play the right band any of the times I tried to command it. It would always chose some weird album name instead of the band name I was stating. Oh well... voice calling is more important than song controlling anyway in my eyes.

I've found that this actually works really well. I've got an installed car system (an Alpine iDA x100) and the iPhone mounted on the dashboard. Even with all the noise in the car, it was flawlessly picking up my voice for controlling the music and dialing. It's great instead of trying to drill down all those menus while driving.

Where can I find the commands for other languages? I have my phone set to Japanese but I don't have a Japanese manual since I bought my phone in the U.S.

First command I tried? "Play Artist 311." Needless to say, it didn't work.

When I manually played some 311 and asked what artist it was, iPhone tells me it's "three hundred eleven." So I ask again... "Play Artist Three Hundred Eleven."

Result? "Playing Artist Limp Bizkit." Hrmm...

It does seem to go a good job of picking up your voice at a distance, at least.

LOL, yeah, unfortunately it seems to have a real hard time with some artist and song names. :( I kept asking it to play "Cybernetic Queen" (by Iron Savior) and it instead it kept picking completely random songs — a different one each time — anything but the song I wanted.

I like how Andy Inatko explained Voice Control in his review:

"Voice control is a tough feature to successfully pull off on any device. No, the iPhone doesn’t pull it off."

Unfortunately Apple has lots more work to do to make VC viable. This is one of the features I was looking most forward too, but it's not really useful when you only have a 50% change of getting the iPhone to do what you want it to do.

This is actually a feature. As soon as it hears a British accent, it assumes you need a dentist.

Sorry, couldn't resist!:D

Very good!!!!
Mind you the US obsession with a blinding white smile is gaining ground in old blighty. God help us, another element of american cultural hegemony we've imported to the UK.
Having said that I love the US!!!!
Maybe we should start a thread with photos of peoples smiles? Guess which country they come from.

Anyone else having trouble using voice to play music? I accidentally dialed about 5 people trying to play music. I even say play first but it dials instead.

lol, i'm having this trouble too, guess it doesn't like a welsh accent.

Would've been good to have it confirm before it just dials. 'calling joe bloggs, confirm?' or just be able to disable it from dialing when in ipod. Anything to stop it dialing random people.

ah well, plenty more stuff to play with. :D

Works in conjunction with RunKeeper (kinda) -

Definitely useful mid run to be able to just say "shuffle" and "genius" to help shift things up. Having an easy to pronounce and recognise artist of the song genre you want (e.g. high energy dance) helps, as you ask for them, then say genius. (Not sure if it yet recognises asking for "play dance" yet)

Voice Control- "Next"

Have not seen this posted yet... But if you active Voice Control while playing a song and say "Next" it goes to the next song in the playlist or album of the artist. That's cool!

Mine seems to choose something completely different from what I wanted most of the time. Anyone else's like this? I don't have an accent, other than a slight NY accent.

another way to activate voice controls

Press and hold the Home button for 3 seconds.
I dont know if this was advertised with voice controls, but it turns out holding the call answer button on the headphones for 3secs or so activates voice control too. I think this is sweet and much more practical than holding the home button down. You would want to use voice controls when you cant really reach for your phone in your pocket. Besides if i was to look at my phone and press and hold down the home button..I could possibly do my action as fast the traditional way.
