Don't know where you are but in Baton Rouge, LA it is blazing fast.

So you are saying the Verizon iPhone is a little faster? :)

The best thing to do is to have one iPhone on AT&T and another on Verizon and compare speeds in the exact same location with speed test first and then by doing other tasks like loading a webpage, uploading a photo, and so forth. Numbers only tell so much and don't always translate into actual performance. Until then...

Been doing this today with an AT&T iPhone and a Verizon Droid x.

I'm in Philly on a college campus and been field testing speeds around campus.

I always knew that AT&T and Verizon in Philly were somewhat equal?

I've been taking screenshots of both device speed test. Interesting finds so far.

Ping times: averaging 100-125 with Verizon compared to 300-325 with AT&T

Upload speeds: both I would equal however Verizon is much more consistent in upload speeds(pretty much almost the same upload speeds). AT&T has higher upload speeds in most areas around the campus but showed more 'dead spots' where upload speeds were significantly lower than Verizon.

Download speeds: Verizon is much more consistent averaging 1.3. In other words speeds in different locations didn't change much. AT&T numbers are all over the place but smoked Verizon in certain areas(no contest).

Seems like Verizon 3G is able to hold consistency much better than AT&T. After a while I knew I would expect the same experience with Verizon. With AT&T sort of unpredictable. At certain locations AT&T extremely slow, Verizon slow too but not as slow. But other locations AT&T literally smoked Verizon.

So the debate really shouldn't be about speed or reliability. It should be about consistency and so far Verizon is more consistent. However that could change with more testing.

I just ran a speed test from my office and netted 1.78 down. .75 up on Verizon 3G. An AT&T user I work with ran at least a dozen tests and was unable to get over 1mbps down while his upload was .06. That, to me, is unacceptable.

I also destroyed him in website loading. In most tests the Verizon iPhone would completely load the page before his iphone would even start loading images and text.

I also was more than two times faster than an EVO running on sprint 3G.

I am more than pleased at this point.

it all boils down to your area and the reception for VZW in that area.

interesting how the AT&T fanboys just have to slam VZW. Guys, it's just a phone on a different network. why get so hot and bothered over it?

This forum is full of aggro techie nerds. aim your angst at your poster of A7X.

lmao at how this thread has literally devolved into people defending a network with speed test screenshots.

Want to see a screen shot of the speed test running while I was on a call?

All I was pointing out is that AT&T isn't nearly as bad as some people would love to have you think it is

Because, sadly, there are network fanboys.

I know, I know, it's really something sad, but there are those that buy into the hype of television commercials and other marketing materials. :p

Bottom line, you can get what phone you want, and you have another network to choose. I'm on AT&T, but if I was having the same issues that some are here with AT&T, I'd be on Verizon in a heartbeat.

The network is just a dumb pipe, despite what the providers want you to believe(and unfortunately, some here believe it.)

For me, AT&T is quite unpredictable. Sometimes, I get 5 mbps down and 2 mbps up. Other times, I get .2 mbps down and .1 up, both on 3G, same location.

I'd probably be willing to trade greater reliability and coverage (Verizon) for increased speed sometimes (AT&T). I don't ever depend on voice coverage, though, so dropped calls aren't an issue.

I'll admit that my AT&T speed can fluctuate, but not remotely close to the degree that your's does. Mine rarely falls below 1 mbps down/.5 mbps up. Likewise, it's rarely over 3 mbps down/1.5 mbps up.

Here's my results from 20 minutes ago:

Ping is high, but I only had 3 bars of signal.

One thing is for sure, I'm glad I don't live in San Francisco. BOTH carrier's data speeds suck in that town!

ATT here in North Jersey. The best test result I have is 5.49mbps (D) /1.55mbps (U), average is about 1.85 (D)/1.35 (U).

My results are all over the place though. Sometimes I'll break 2.00mbps down, sometimes I won't even break 1.00mbps down.

EDIT:

I'd like to add that we should give it a week. Test again when the majority of people leaving ATT have their VZW iPhone. I wonder how the speeds will be then.

After recently JBn my iPhone 4 and enabling USB tether, I have discovered that the speedtest.net app for some reason consistently reports high pings in comparison to tethering to a laptop and running speedtest in a web browser. There seems to be something weird with the app as the extremelabs app reports similar ping times as tethered speedtest.net in a web browser results.

Wow, I can't believe how slow some people's AT&T speeds are. Mine pretty much NEVER dips below about 2.5 Mbps downstream.

I just ran a quick test:
4.71 Mbps down
1.03 Mbps up

That's pretty typical here, and I never drop calls or lose coverage. That's why I love being an AT&T customer in Wichita, KS. :D

its flat out there, nothing to impede the signal....:D

not sure if i ever slammed at&t guys.

I did slam the aggro techie emo nerds. i will admit to that.

you iphone guys are a strange breed. I hope i don't turn into one of you when I get my Verizon iPhone.

are you for real? i copy/pasted your reply and changed the VZW to AT&T to prove a point. it goes both ways. there is just as many verizon folk on here bashing AT&T. why did you only pick on the AT&T ones?

This just makes me chuckle. Maybe because I've been in IT for 10 years. 1Mbps is PLENTY of bandwidth for a smart phone.

You have no clue what you're talking about. The fact that you have been in IT doesn't mean squat in today's mobile device world. I suggest you do a little more research, read more, learn a lot and post less.

i think a good test would be to DL the same app side by side on 3g.. free app of course ;)

This is what all the android fanboys want, internal discord in the iPhone camp. Let's just all play nice and say that our phone rocks on any network. I for one do not miss my Droid 1 a whole lot, the iPhone is just so much smoother and polished.

reading this thread is leaning towards signing up with Verizon. I'll be able to facetime with 3g with a jailbroken phone and don't have to worry about a data limit. I also want to use Netflix a lot while in the car so my daughter can watch cartoons. I won't be able to do this with the AT&T version.
