You can skip the back up. Click on the X in the status window. It will then start syncing.

However, do not do this if you haven't backed up recently. if you plan to use a restore for your new iP4 then you will need the restore point.

I skip the back up a lot and it always syncs with the changes done on the phone side and the itunes side.

I don't think you cans skip the backup during the iOS 4 update.

Hey everyone, does anyone else have more input on the 3G speed with iOS4...many of these posts are about backing up and not the original topic (not trying to be rude, I understand it has only been out for an hour!)

Thanks

Definitely have no speed complaints about iOS 4 on my 3G; I think I'll JB this though and see how it goes with multitasking and the other goodies enabled.

I just installed iPhone 4.0 on my iPhone 3GS, and here is my 3G speed:

0kbps.

translation: "Cannot Open Page - Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding."

I rebooted, and I still have no 3G data. Calls work just fine. Edge data is down too. I'll keep y'all updated.

Hmm...this is good to hear. If I hear more positive feedback re iOS 4 performance on iPhone 3G, I may upgrade as well. I wasn't initially going to do that due to the expected slow performance.

I was relieved too LOL. It was noticeably snappier for everything. Jailbreak is not bad, I disabled multitasking at first, seems just as good with the wallpapers enabled - nice and responsive. Tempted to crack open iFile again and re-enable multitasking to see how that ends up; I was expecting horrible performance with the other goodies on.

Edit - Ok, re-enabled multitasking, there is a tiny bit of lag when switching between pages, but it's otherwise fantastic. The lag isn't noticeable enough for me to bother turning it back off again. I was expecting some annoying pauses between pages, or at the lock screen but everything seems to be more responsive than I expected when enabling the stuff.

After the upgrade/restore (the whole process took about an hour and 15 mins) my iPhone seems to be running about the same speed as before. Some apps are a little quicker, some a little slower. Overall it seems to be a wash. At least for now. Hopefully it doesn't slow down in the future.

You are obviously not the people he is asking the question of unless you jailbroke your phone.

He is asking those with *3G* s how their experience is. If you are multi tasking on your phone, then you have a *3GS* which has more RAM and will not be a good teller of how well iOS4 works on a *3G*.

You can enable multitasking and wallpapers on the 3G once you're jailbroken.

Well I'm bored and want to wipe my iPhone before I trade it in anyway so I'll try it out. Currently downloading the update on iTunes.

God i hate my 3G now. So slow compared to my iPad.

It's slow, but don't think it's any slower than 3.0 (which was pretty bad to begin with).

Definitely happy I'm upgrading to a iphone 4 on Thursday, but if you've managed with 3.0 on the 3G, ios4 is really not much different in terms of speed.

Couldnt agree more. It takes a full 4-5 sec count to open text message app on my 3g. i can't even use it anymore after getting used to the ipad. It unbearable

I have an iPhone 3G...

I'd like to do a complete restore/install of iOS4....looking for some guidance.

Should I upgrade and install iOS4 and then do a restore?

Or

Should I restore first and then upgrade to iOS4?

Thanks in advance
