Just started playing with iOS4 on my 3G, and its much more responsive. Going to the home screen is much quicker, Phone Favorites, Notes, and messages are quicker. My phone hasn't been this snappy for a while.

I wouldn't even try to JB, in fear that it may slow down. I'd like to keep my phone as quick as possibly until I get the white iP4.

OMG, just upgraded my 3G. after syncing tried to swipe to my second page of apps and my phone just totally froze for the first time ever......gulp! :(

Thought I would chime in here because I finally finished successfully upgrading to iOS4 on my iPhone 3G. I have to say I'm seriously impressed. Compared to the latest build of 3.X, the 4 software absolutely rocks on the 3G. There are speed increases everywhere. Animations and transitions are much faster, scrolling between app pages and through texts/contacts is smoother, and the phone in general is just much more responsive. It almost feels like the processor got a squirt of steroids!

The camera is also a huge difference. Shutter speed has increased dramatically and you can take pictures much faster. So far, I have no complaints whatsoever with iOS4 on the 3G. Before upgrading, I was really sick and tired of how slow and laggy the 3.X software was... it really annoyed me. Now after upgrading, it's snappy and fast!

This should hold me over until the iPhone 4 is delivered on the 24th :D

Awesome news! Im in 2 minds now when to update. I wanted to wait for official JB but my go ahead now and have the v4 on the device so when JB is out i can do it straight away

Mine seemed fast at first (restored as new), but it's only because switching apps and new windows is faster. Loading the actually data in each is slower and really annoying.

Feel bad, cuz once I get iPhone 4 my girl is getting this old 3g. It will be her first iPhone and it won't be a good experience. She's out of contract so I told her she may want to just purchase a 3GS or 4. Her reply, "You mean PAY for a phone?! No way!" (She gets free phones from a friend at Sony Ericson)

I do not know what phones you guys are using, but I have been using IOS4 sense the day it was released for the developers. I have noticed my phone (3g 16gb) has been running a lot slower than normal. Screen glitches, Programs closing and freezing, During games example guitar hero the game glitches, also I can tell you about several times I am driving and the iPhone is connected to my FM transmitter and the iPod just closes. So idk about all of you but seems to me that on the 3g the phone is working less amazing.

iPhone 4 thursday WOOO!

I'm thinking that Apple only made iOS4 available to iPhone 3G users so that we'll all get frustrated with an OS that clearly is designed for newer hardware and so purchase an iPhone 4. (Though if like me, you skipped the 3Gs with that intention)

I loaded 4.0 on my 3G and it works well. I just wish there was somewhere that showed what the 3G can do compared to it's counterparts.

LOL Me and my wife are in the exact same situation. She's getting my 3G once I get the iPhone4 on the 24th. Regardless, I'm updating my 3G to iOS4 once I get home tonight. Hope it's not too slow for her! :p

after we upgrade to iOS4 do we need to do another backup if we plan on restoring our data to our iP4s? Because wouldnt the backup it's doing before the iOS4 upgrade be a backup of 3.1.3? Making it not work when trying to restore to iP4?

After reading this thread there are very mixed messages as to whether or not 4.0 slows down the 3G and I am none the wiser!
I would like to update my 3G to 4.0 but if it makes it any worse than 3.1.3 already is speed/stability-wise then I really am stuck as I won't be able to downgrade. Decisions decisions...

Faster after Carrier Update

My 3G iPhone was painfully slow and apps kept crashing right after I installed iOS 4, but then when I plugged back into iTunes I received a message that there were updated carrier settings ready for installation. I installed these and now it seems to be running fine. (I'm on the Rogers network in Canada.)

Because "the hardware just won't support the kind of experience for multitasking that [Apple] would like to see".
Yea I get that, but the issue would have been concerning speed. Seems to me the 3G is more than capable of handling multi tasking.

OK so I updated to OS 4.0 (complete restore) and I have to say it feels a bit faster. Granted I have only used it for a few minutes thus far and the animations of apps opening/closing seem quicker (while in truth perhaps it still takes the same amount of time until the app is useable) but on the whole it seems quite nice. Folders are useful and the dock looks much better in my opinion.
Haven't had any problems sending a few txts speed-wise as some people seem to have had in other threads but maybe after a day or so of use I will update with my thoughts. Happy so far anyway

Mine runs a bit faster, keyboard lags at times. Also, I jailbroke mine and got multitasking and home-screen wallpapers, that slowed my phone down A LOT.

It's certainly capable of handling multitasking. Apple simply made a judgment call deeming the iPhone 3G to not be capable of delivering a satisfying multitasking experience - probably mainly due to the meager amount of RAM the iPhone 3G came with.

Been over an hour now in iTunes doing the upgrade, man this is slow! I am starting the upgrade over.

I'm at the 5 hour mark and it still hasn't finished the upgrade. Showing very little progress backing up my iPhone. WTF?
