This is a common problem and Apple will have no problems replacing this right away. I think this is more widespread but if you have a black version which is probably more popular, you'll never even notice the cracks where the white is more apparent.

I had 2 white 3GS for my wife and I and we never drop the phone and had cases on since we purchase, however we did notice almost identical cracks near the mute switch and near dock connector. Mine also had smaller hairline cracks near the camera and headphone adaptor.

Here's my tip, once you get a new replacement, sell it for top dollar and buy a new iPhone 4 or 4S. They don't have any of these problems and you'll get a new warranty to boot.

Thanks. Is this true even for an out-of-warranty phone like in my case?

Refurbs are packaged totally different then new ones.

I don't think that proves it.

That is explained by the the fact that is costs more to make the retail boxes and they take up more space...think of just the shipping savings when you factor the extra number of units per container yielded by the smaller size of the units being shipped.

Also, how were there 4S phones stocked at a Genius bar near you for service replacements on launch day?

Take it back to Genius, most likely they'll replace yours since this is a widespread problem with 3G and 3Gs. It has a plastic back which obviously unable to hold stress from plug/unplug your dock or headphone so many times.

You can prevent this by plugging the dock into some kind of adapter and never remove it. (dock to micro usb adapter comes to mind) that way your iphone backplate can withstand much longer.

Luckily 4 and 4s placing all ports on the antenna band, which wont crack whatsoever. But then again it has antenna problems  life will never be perfect, huh? ;)

My wifes phone has the same crack on her white 3gs and out of warranty. Took it to Apple store they refused to replace the phone. Can anyone suggest what should we do?

I'm not so sure that it's a manufacturing defect. My 3GS has no cracks. Scratches and blemishes? Yes. Cracks? No.

...because everything on the Internet is true. And it's simply not possible there is more than one person posting about this problem who accidentally damaged their phone.

Apparently everything on the internet is true.

You've just been SOPAfied.

Just kidding.

Just noticed I've got a serious crack in my 10 month old 3GS around the connector slot. What options are there? (return, exchange for old refurb, lump it....)

Just realize that the new one will eventually crack as well. All the white iPhones I have ever owned have cracked. I sold two white 32GBs that were cracked and then bought a used one on CL that had cracks.

Even back with the white 3Gs, all of mine back then were cracked as well.

If you have one with no cracks, it will eventually.
