Why would they be like that? Have I missed something?

The 4S had the same resolution as the 4? The 4 had twice the resolution (four times the pixels) as the 3GS.

Sarcasm. They're butthurt for not being invited to the press event. And I was saying that if the new iPad was the 2S, then the 4S should have had twice the resolution of the 4.) I was evaluating his yardstick in a logical fashion instead of a Im going to generate linkbait fashion.

I did. :). And I went from 4 to 4S and iPad to iPad 2 and tomorrow I'm going from iPad 2 to new iPad. :)

haha, me too. but i dont agree with you, the retina alone to me is worth going from 2 to new. and with apple resale value you can always sell the last version of whatever to go to the newest version for cheap

Great and thorough review by the Verge. I already have a buyer committed to $500 for my iPad 2 (64GB AT&T). Another plus of the iPad and Apple products is their resale value. So my cost to own the iPad 2 comes out to be .82 cent per day. Far less than my Starbucks addiction.

Come on FedEx :)

It's funny that the "S" label has become what people call new releases that don't fulfil their personal expectations.

- Those who wanted more RAM or quad-core? This is just an iPad 2S...
- Those (like me) who wanted a screen like the iPhone 4 but bigger? Clearly a next generation iPad 3!

It does have more RAM however.

ATT and Verizon won't stand unlimited plans if everyone going to have 40Mbps downlink.

I am really curious to find out how AT&T handles grandfathered in unlimited plans from when the iPad originally launched.

After comparing coverage maps, we decided to go with Verizon for the greater LTE footprint. But it is a close call - AT&T's "4G" is in practice nearly as fast, and if we can move the unlimited SIM over from our iPad 2 that would be amazing.

We did a blog post yesterday using our app 'Coverage?' to directly overlay and compare AT&T and Verizon's LTE and "4G" coverage maps. Screenshots posted here: http://www.technomadia.com/2012/03/verizon-vs-att-4g-lte-networks/

Seriously Guys...

Anyone who is complaining about this new iPad not being a big enough upgrade needs to go take a really long, hard look at themselves in the mirror. While it may not be a significant enough upgrade from an iPad 2 for YOU to buy, the upgrades are both innovative and impressive.

Many people have become somewhat desensitized to technological break throughs such as the retina display and the new battery, which is the same dimensions as the iPad 2 battery, but holds almost twice the power. Its not like these technologies have been around forever, Apple had to do some serious engineering to pull off the 3rd generation iPad. How often is it that a company, that is dominating particular market, keeps pushing the limits over and over. Almost never. Look at Microsoft. They dominate the OS market yet continue to produce a stagnate, lifeless, product that is complicated and hard to use even though they have a seamlessly endless amount of resources that they could take advantage of.

Apple is not successful because of "Fanboys" or cult followers that will just buy anything Apple puts out, they are successful because of break throughs like this. Making products thats were once thought to be impossible. So stop being so critical of Apple. They are just about the only company that has an understanding of the importance of the "user experience." This is why its so hard to explain to someone why an Apple product is so great. Its the user experience. :apple: 4 Life

concerns i still have:

- can you record in 720p, or are you locked into 1080p? i know you can get around it by downsizing your clips in iMovie, but i refuse to go through that extra step every time.

- i read that Retina-ized versions of apps are 2-3x bigger. if i extrapolate that out to all my apps i currently have installed, i'm seriously concerned that 32GB won't be enough room anymore, and i don't want to spend that much money for a 64GB iPad.....

I was happy the minute the details rolled out.

The screen and LTE being major enhancements for an iPad one user. On top of that iOS 5.1 is a major improvement on my iPad 1, so it ought to be even better on an dual core machine.

Looks like the reviews are going to make all of us pre-orderers just a little more happy tonight.

Come on, Friday!

Yes come on Friday, I can see myself being late for work. I'd rather wait for that iPad 3.

The reports of the device getting noticeably hot are distressing but I guess all of that new technology doesn't come for free. This debut is interesting because I was in a restaurant cruising the net a bit and out of the blue two old ladies started up a conversation with me about my iPad. That has never happened before so I have to think public interest is very high.

Seriously guys this new iPad is a major achievement. Only someone that has spent his life doing nothing would see this as a minor upgrade. Retina display, LTE, new battery, enhanced processor, more RAM and other features add up to an impressive third generation device.

Some are never satisfied. The highest resolution screen of any tablet or laptop on the market. Period. Better resolution than most people's monitors on their desks. So high a resolution that the Image I show on my 70" 1080p TV has to be scaled UP to fit the iPad screen. New 4G connectivity. Awesome graphics upgrade that is pushing 4 times the pixels at 1.6 X the rate of the iPad 2. New, leading camera by any tablet (as reviewed). And an awesome battery. The bane of 4G has been how it kills batteries. Apple doubles the battery capacity. All this AND more, same price, same amazing form-factor. People were even speculating there would be an iPad 3 and and iPad 3 HD or Pro with an additional cost for the screen upgrade. Not the case. Yet people say its just an "S"

Whatever.

What will be even funnier is when Apple loyalists get a LTE iPad and test out LTE speeds. All that Sh-talking about "We dont need that in our iPhone yet," "Its not wildly adopted" "Data caps" etc. After this weekend I imagine a LOT of people will be singing a different toon.

ON the other hand, if you can step out of the apple RDF you could of enjoyed LTE speeds for well over a year! The new iPad will make a nice companion device to my Galaxy Nexus!

Can't wait to see that screen!:)

Btw, it's "could have" or "could've." I understand why most people think "could've" is "could of"--they sound the same.

Anyways, Apple chose not to include LTE on the iPhone4/4s not just because of the lack of LTE coverage at the time. They chose not to include it because the battery technology available at the time were not up to snuff.

Android phone makers will often opt for the latest and greatest specs (because the OS is inefficiently designed/copied) at the expense of battery life (e.g. Droid Bionic), but not Apple. Having a fast data connection is nice, but being able to use your phone all day without it dying is more important.

If you don't believe me with the inefficient OS comment, I'll pose this question: why is it that on Android devices with a higher clocked dual-core CPU and more RAM, something as simple as the rubberband scrolling effect is still not silky smooth compared to an iPhone 4, which has a lower clocked single-core CPU and less RAM?

Maybe this is exactly why they dropped the model numbering system completely for the iPad so 10 years from now people aren't commenting "iPad 13, more like iPad 12S".

Oh well, at least I know I will be enjoying the new iPad tomorrow.

When it comes to the screen there will be some individuals who think it is by far the most important thing about the new iPad and will think it is a phenomenal upgrade b/c of it. There will also be others who really don’t care much about the screen/crisper graphics. Nobody is right and nobody is wrong.

Uh no, those people are wrong. The screen resolution increase is doing the same thing for the Tablet Space Apple did for the Smartphone Space with the iPhone 4. Now high-res screens are common place in handsets so it's hard to remember what a game changing event that was.

You're so egotistical. You're willing to sacrifice performance just to make yourself look better? Good grief!

not really, i think making the front facing better has more priority than the back facing camera.

if apple improves both, I had take it.

Common, i used both iPad and iPad 2 since day one, back facing camera usage has very rare use case than the front facing camera.

keep it coming.

i said it earlier, let me say it again, they should have improved the front facing camera not the back facing camera.

Yeah - this is our first iPad, and I'm also getting one as a present for my folks (they live in the middle of nowhere, and hardly see them), so it'll get used for Facetime calls with them. So the lack of an HD Facetime camera is the one thing I'd have really liked to see. (that hasn't been updated.)

Cool story except for the fact that the iPad display was developed by Sharp (including tech from Dr John Zhong who works at Apple)

Oh and LG also makes them now.

...and who's making those screens at the only quality level that Apple requires?

Samsung.

To paraphrase Steve Jobs, in order for Apple to succeed, Samsung does not have to fail.

Agreed,

unfortunately many of them do not realize in this thread (those probably has too many devices at their home), it is easy for us to buy iPad for our folks who are less into technology than PC and ask them to come for a Chat (either facetime/Skype).

Complete baloney.

It's all done according to Apple's design and specs. If it doesn't come from Samsung it'll come from someone else. Samsung is a major supplier, that's it.

Why is there no "retina" Samsung tablet??

No, I'll thank Apple for being Apple. That's the one and only reason I've got an iPad in my hands today and not a slab of crap that we saw pre-iPad.

So Apple designed the retina display for the iPad and Samsung merely built them? It's all Apple tech, none of Samsung's? If Samsung made a retina tablet, wouldn't Apple sue them?
