Really? I have never seen this brought up on MacRumors at all. That was the first I ever heard of it when I went to that website. If my iPhone 4 did that constantly, I would take it back in a heartbeat.

You should read more. The internet is big world.

Short of actually upgrading to the iPhone 4, I've already gone through 2 new 3GS iPs. Not the phone, it's the iOS. Until Apple chimes in on this, it's the only rational explanation for the issues.

I only care to look at MacRumors for my information. It's really funny that the 3GS restarting on a call is such a huge problem yet no one has yet to complain about it on MacRumors. This is one of the top rated and most visited Apple related sights for information and searching on MRoogle, no one has yet to say anything about it.

4.1 fixed the proximity sensor bug for me. At least, so far. And I've intentionally tried to get the front screen to come on while the iPhone 4 was held up to my ear (by moving the iPhone into different positions and angles). While I could EASILY reproduce the proximity sensor bug on iOS 4.0.x, I have yet to be able to reproduce it with 4.1.

Same here. Before iOS 4.1 I could move the phone a little and see the light come on when held to my ear making a call. After 4.1 I can't get it to do this no matter what or how hard I try. iOS 4.1 absolutely fixed the sensor bug for me.

I don't see why Apple won't offer you a replacement on this iPhone. You can just update to 4.1 and tell them that the issue persists.

To be honest though I didn't experience this issue with my iPhone so I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

I can't say that 4.1 completely fixed it for me, but I seem to be having a lot less issues than before. My wife still has issues with it from time to time, but it seems to have improved it to some degree for her also.

Can you see the red light from the sensor by any chance? I've read a lot of people can see the light and others can't. I wonder why this is?

I never had a single prox sensor problem until 4.1. Now I cannot make single call without pushing buttons. Whatever they did completely screwed up the phone for me.

I'm confused by that too. I did some googling and it seems to be an IR LED so surely the human eye shouldn't see it? I've heard talk of being able to see it on a webcam since they can sometimes see certain IR frequencies but are people really seeing the LED with the naked eye?

Yes, it's visible, especially, in the darkness, so turn off the lights and check it: if you don't see it, swap the phone

Hmm. Thanks. That's wierd though. I just went into a darkened room and called my landline. When the call connected (to my answering machine) I started moving my hand up to the front face of the phone and away again. The proximity sensor seemed to work flawlessly; whenever I moved my hand to within about 1cm of the area around the earpiece speaker the screen blanked and when I moved my hand away again it came back on. I spent about 15 seconds moving my hand forwards and backwards to and from the screen and the display came on and off exactly as expected. At no time could I see any LED visible though.

I had the issue before 4.1 and after 4.1. I returned my phone to AT&T and got a full refund. I don't have time to deal with this crap. Went back to my 3GS which has NO issues.

Good luck everyone!

I have the same experience, issue has gotten a little better with 4.1, but still persists. I sold my 3GS and sticking with my iPhone4.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear all this you guys. I talk all the time on my phone and this issue is making the free 3GS I have look better and better. I think I'll wait until iPhone 5.

Wait if you like, however, just remember that not all of the iPhone 4's have any issues. My iPhone 4 is perfect, and has been since the day I got it 7 weeks ago. :)

Wait, so you should be able to see the LED light on 4.1 and if not return it back to Apple?

LED light, as in what a Blackberry has? If so, the iPhone doesn't have this.

I have been through three phones. My wife has no problems so I tried hers. I still have a problem. Know how I fixed it ?
I put my ear in the center of the display, not by the earpiece. Haven't had a single problem since. It must be something about the dimensions of the phone. If you put the ear hole over your ear, it doesn't work. Just try it. When you start talking put your ear on the center of the screen. It will work.

This is total craziness! I just had a 4 minute conversation with my girlfriend. First my face ended the call. I called back it then activated facetime, then muted the call.

Apple this is nuts. I use my Iphone for business and am tired of having to recall customers and tell them I'm sorry for hanging up on them. I never had this problem with my 3GS, 3G or 2G. This crap is enough to make me revolt!
My bluetooth works sometimes and other times i have to turn off Wifi.
I don't think that 4.1 did any good to IPhone 4 owners. It must have been built to address issues that the 3gs and 3gs were having.
I'm a hugh Apple fan but this is totally killing the joy of owning the IPhone 4. After all, I do use it as a phone sometimes:mad:

This is so strange!! I had the problem on 100% of my calls before 4.1, and now it has been drastically improved, to the point where it is really, really rare now...almost non-existent!!

I don't understand how the update can eliminate the proximity problem for some, improve it for others, and not help at all for some!!

I'venot had ANY issues with my iPhone 4. Proximity sensor or antenna.

Just to add on this, I've been having all kinds of proximity sensor problems on 4.1. I keep putting people on mute and then they get pissed cause they think the call dropped. Today I tried to see if it would work better if I took the bumper off, and then I ended up choking out the signal with my death grip - and still hitting buttons with my cheek - insane.

The 4.1 update did not resolve any issues with the proximity sensor. I bought my from in the US (so locked to AT&T), but I am studying abroad in England for 4 months…What would happen if I took my phone into Apple? Would it be worth a shot?

Anyone have a similar experience or any suggestion?

just got my iP4 on 4.1, can see the red light in the dark, and yeah the sensor only works half the time.. pretty annoying!
