I received the following today (9/22) from Apple support in response to my query on a defect I opened re: prox sensor some weeks ago:

At this time, there isn't any new information available for this issue. I have checked with engineering and the issue is still being investigated.

So it seems clear to me that while 4.1 is better for many, it's not a complete solution for all.

FWIW, 4.2 beta 1 doesn't seem to be any different WRT sensor timing. However, I've never had any prox sensor issues with my test units so I can't say for sure if it's better or worse.

Are they ***** kidding me? I pushed the ***** mute button ever time I made a call. How the heck can they not reproduce the symptoms. It happened numerous times while on the phone with Apple talking with them, and even hung up on them one time.

What now?

Well, I would like to tell you to take it directly to an Apple store as I did, but I'd assume you would have done that initially if you were close to one.

My problem got worse after I updated to 4.1 so I took it in to exchange. Got the new one a week ago and right there in front of the genius I made a call and could not see the screen going ******* crazy so I was like great i finally have phone without a proximity sensor issue.

Well I get home to sync from backup and realized it had 4.02. So I proceeded to upgrade to 4.1, made a call and you guessed it. Same ole chit!

I've had enough of it all and will most likely jump ship to Android as soon as AT&T gets a decent HTC or Motorola phone with 4.3 screen (EVO, Droid X, etc.)

I'm just tired of the lies coming out of Cupertino. If I end up back to continue bending over for Apple/Jobs then so be it. I'm just not going to sit back and do nothing as it obviously defeats the purpose.

Same story with me. Upgraded to 4.1 and it got worse, so I detoured on my way home from college and went to the Apple store. They gave me a new phone with 4.0.2 and it didn't have the problem. Upgraded to 4.1 and it was back.

I've never had a proximity sensor problem with my i4.

So what's the difference? The i4's? Smeared dirt on the sensor? Or could it be something about the users, such sideburns, beards, gray hair, skin color, makeup, weird lighting, holding the phone the wrong way 'round, or with fingers over the sensor, or what?

Hey yall,

Long time reader, first time contributing. I was having proximity sensor issues with my week 30 phone before and after 4.1. Talked to applecare about it before and after 4.1. Before 4.1, they said to wait for the software update. After 4.1, they said to do a restore to new phone. Did that, still had problems, called applecare back up, who set up an appointment for me at the the apple store.

Went in, no questions asked they replaced my phone thanks to my case number from applecare. My new phone serial number begins with 5K034, which I've seen isn't the norm in the manufacturing thread. Haven't had any issues so far.

Phone that start with 5K are refurbished. Probably means your phone had extra testing though.

NOT true! It used to be so a long time ago: now even new ones start with 5K.

You're wrong. I know people have "reported" they received "new" devices starting with 5k but they are either lying or mistaken. I know for a fact that Apple uses the 5k moniker in the serial number to identify refurbished phones. You won't find ANYBODY able to prove otherwise.

It worked that way with the original iPhone. Any Apple store employee will tell you that now you can't tell a refurb from a new one with 5K: they go both ways.

When 4.1 first came out my proximity sensor issues seemed to disappear. Now, in just the last week nearly every call I've had is having problems. I hung up on numerous people, I've activated Facetime with non iPhone users, I've pressed buttons when the keypad is active. I just don't get it. I took it into Apple and they couldn't reproduce it.

I didn't think I had the proximity issue before 4.1, but I have it, and it's bad. I hold my phone normally to my head, and it's never an inch away from my ear. I've pressed mute twice on an hour-long call, and I pressed speaker once. The screen kept lighting up and it was rather annoying.

This is great, I wonder if Apple is going to admit it's the actual sensor that's faulty. :(

Of course not. Apple still won't even fully admit there is a proximity sensor issue at all. The closest we have gotten so far is along the lines of "We have made the proximity sensor more sensitive to accommodate our customers that either refuse to or don't know how to hold the phone correctly."

You're absolutely correct. 5K actually symbolizes a phone designated to be a replacement phone. It may be refurbished, but they do make new iPhones directly from the factory and designate them to be replacements with a 5K serial number. It's been that way ever since the introduction of the iPhone 3GS

I've seen this nonsense reported in this forum for the last year and a half but it's 100%, without question, incorrect. ANY iPhone that starts with 5k is a refurbished phone. There are no 'ifs' 'ands' or 'buts' about it, that's just a fact.

Sure, Mr. Jobs:D

Well, considering the fact that I received a new, in box ( not white box, but full on sealed black Apple box ) an iPhone 3G with a serial number beginning with 5K I would beg to differ.
