I just got my ipad in december and have never jailbroken it or updated it..

I first tried using greenpois0n on it , but dint work , then i freshly installed 4.2.1 (8C148) and nothing , then jail broke with redsn0w_mac_0.9.6b4 with iPad1,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw and still nothing.

Greenpois0n does indeed work for the 3G iPad. Use the latest RC as linked on the previous page and then use redsn0w IF Cydia does not install successfully.

Just tried it again, It was generating then started loading on the screen then gave me failed.

Since you have reinstalled a fresh firmware, most probably you have lost the previous GreenPois0n JB.
What you need to do is run GreenPois0n again using RC5-2.
During the last step, you need to press the HOME button (don't release it) when you see a lot of verbose text on the screen.

Once the device is Jailbroken, you need to use Redsn0w to install Cydia ONLY. Need to use the right ipsw.

If you happened to be in Recovery Mode, use Tiny Umbrella to "kick" your device out of Recovery Mode.

Panic: We are hanging here

I tried with RC5-2. Here's what i did. Quit iTunes, turned off the iPad, plugged in the iPad. Started greenpois0n RC5-2. Followed the directions to get into DFU mode. The first time i tried the JB, i released the Home button once the verbose messages started. The second time i tried the JB, i kept the home button held down throughout all of the verbose messages.

Both times, i got lots of verbose messages, but then it stopped with the following message:

"panic: We are hanging here. . ."

And now it just stays there. I can reboot the machine, and I'm still at the 3.2 JB. Any suggestions?

Did you first install the 4.2.1 firmware? Sounds like you are trying to apply the JB on top of 3.2 JB...

Ah, no. OK, stop laughing. Do i do a clean install from itunes or a restore??? In other words, can someone give this idiot a step by step as to how i should get 4.21 on the ipad. Right now, i have JB 3.2. Thanks.

Dummy Guide (for iPad)

I would do a clean install to avoid possible issues...

- Make sure you have a Mac at 10.6+
- Make sure your iTunes is 10.1.x
- Download Firmware 4.2.1
- Download GreenPois0n

1) Open iTunes
2) Click on the iPad icon on the left side
3) Click on the Restore button (holding the alt/Option button)
4) In the pop-up window choose the Firmware file from above (4.2.1 Firmware)
5) Wait for the restore to complete
6) Set up as new iPad
7) For now on the Summary Page uncheck the Open iTunes when this iPad is Connected (you can recheck it if you want after the JB process)
8) Hit Sync
9) Close iTunes
10) Power off the ipad (hold the sleep button till you see the power off slider) and Open GreenPois0n
11) Go through the screens
12) When you get to the part of just holding the home button, just keep holding...
13) After the timer, you should begin to see the iPad screen flash and some output -- Keep holding the HOME button, do not let go
14) You may see errors -- Keep holding the Home button
15) Once the Apple reboot logo comes on you can let go of the Home button -- take about a minute or so, during the time it seemed like it was hanging but it eventually finished
16) When the iPad is done rebooting, go into settings and reconnect your WiFi (if you have 3G plan you should see it already connected) and change the autolock to Never for now
17) Go to the second page in the iPad...
18) Open loader
19) Download Cydia -- may take some time, that why we disabled the autolock since WiFi will stop when locked
20) Once Cydia is download... Open it, Cydia should be setting up and will reboot the iPad afterwards.
21) Once it is rebooted, you should be good to go

Windows version of the Greenpoison jailbreak is now posted on the website for anyone interested.

I couldn't get the Mac version to work on my wifi 16gb. It would start the jailbreak and then just say jailbreak failed. Worked instantly with the windows version

jailbroken with windows version (didnt trust mac version) and installing cydia.

update: All done.

jailbroken my ipad, have cydia and all but i see no skull when rebooting.. is this normal?

Thank you so very much. I used the stock firmware and did a restore. And all is well. Thank you very much. One question, why did you suggest that i use the firmware you gave me a link to instead of just doing a "restore" in itunes and using the stock firmware? Thanks again.

That is the stock firmware. The link goes to Apple.

Buy retinapad, dimmer, snes adx and dospad.

I'm happy with my untethered for now, will wait till 4.3 is out before any more faffing about.

It worked on my iPad without having to restore back to stock 4.2.1 first. I ran it on an iPad with the tethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.

I turned the iPad off, followed the on screen instructions for greenpois0n. But at the last step kept holding down the home button. I had to hold down the button a good 2-3 minutes while text scrolled on the iPad screen. I let go of the home button once I saw the Apple boot logo and it rebooted the iPad. All the jailbreak apps work and now it's an untethered jailbreak without having to start over from stock firmware.

I'm considering trying this, too, but why do you have to keep holding the home button? What happens if you let go?

What happens if you let it go? It doesn't work. :p I read on the boards to keep holding down the home button during the entire jailbreak process so that's what I did. It worked my first try.

I was also on 4.2.1 tethered with redsn0w. As with previous jailbreaks, the first time failed. However, I tried it again & it worked. When getting into DFU mode, the last step where you only hold the Home button, I only held it for the 15 seconds. The countdown clock disappears (I guess it doesn't take 15 seconds to hit DFU mode), but I held it down the full 15 seconds & then clicked jailbreak. I tested it by turning it off, & it booted right up. Since it was applied over the top of a redsn0w JB, I didn't see the Loader icon & Cydia was still there. Very well done Chronic dev team.

Another one here - ran it on top of the tethered redsn0w 4.2.1 JB.

Everything works exactly the same as it did except I can turn it on and off without being tethered!

Hooray!
