Interesting. The imprint is there because I ran the back of a pen around it. Did you try sticking a blade or paperclip to it? Maybe like you said, only the black has the magnet.

Tried that no metal clings to it, I am thinking of glue gunning a small magnet to the flap. I am curious though on the magnet where is it supposed to make contact with on the iPad, is it on the small inner part of the iPad frame that's visible? Or does the magnet actually make contact and go through the case?

Hope that makes sense.

Sorry, this case is total junk. No PU leather its vinyl. Looks cheap. If youre thinking about it skip it.

Mine arrived yesterday in the mail. Much better than I expected for $5. Perfect as a back up or emergency cover. What the heck, you could utilize this cover for everyday use. My cover does have a magnet in the correct spot to engage the auto sleep. Although, the magnet is not strong enough to penetrate the the portion of the case that covers the bezel. Still...this case is tough to beat @ $5.

Mine seems to have a pretty strong magnet because it shuts the screen off about 1/2" before it touches the bottom of the case. It seems to just catch the edge of the case and not touch the screen. Actually the cover never touches the screen as it closes on the border of the bottom part of the case.

But the eBay one is Horizontal and the Amazon one is Vertical. I would definitely prefer horizontal. Mine is supposed to arrive tomorrow in the mail..
You're right, didn't even notice that.

OOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMG! Hopefully you didn't spend the $5 on one!!!!!!! You could always use it as a pizza tray or slice it up and make plastic wrist bands out of it. No such thing as "PU LEATHER." If anythng it's PU synthetic leather. What do you think "PU" is? It's Plastic. PolyUrethane. PU and leather are a contradiction in terms.

For me, the best $5 case I ever owned. Well, the only one. Actually I just moved up to the "POETIC" one for $15 (cost me $10 with Amazonlocal gift card). Who knows what's next, maybe a $20 case!

^^^ figured some smart-aleck would chime in about how cheap the case was impying that quality does not matter for $5. We'll that's $5 I dont have to spend on a better case. I threw it away.

In truth, I bought it to see just what $5 would buy and I say "Dont waste your $5".

Frankly, this thread has left people with the impression this is a usable case. Its not. The material is cheap, does not look like leather. The cover is loose and the fit is tight.

As a, "I dont have anything else" case, I suppose it would work...but most see this thread and want it as their primary case (cause I dont know what the hell a backup case is). For that purpose its not really good.

BTW...I do know that PU leather is..this case does not resemble leather AT ALL and thats what PU leather is suppose to do. Yes its just vinyl in the end.

  • why do i need a $5 case again?
  • what is a "backup emergency case"?
  • what would cause me to need such a backup? Spontaneous combustion of my good cases?

"I'm just saying" ( I wish they would ban people who wrote this phrase)

Maybe we got different cases because the black one I got has a definite fake leather grain to it just like the $49 PU, er, Marware fake leather case I got for my iPad 2 did. The fit is perfect and the magnet works fine.

And how you can say the "case is not USABLE" it totally absurd as it seems to work perfectly fine. It also seems there are a number of people who are using it as well.

I can appreciate the fact you don't like it, but that is your opinion and I'm sure you know what Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry said about opinions: http://bit.ly/gMbEGl

Has magnet, WORKS!

:D

I'm not sure I could ask for more for $5. This is to be a "temporary" case until she decides on a real one. We'll see how she likes it!

Thanks for the heads up OP!

how about "temporary" until case manufacturers sort out what works with iPad 3 and/or update their designs for iPad 3?

In my situation, my wife was not using her iPad and I was getting pissed cause I thought it was cause she didn't have a case (based on things she said) so I put her to the task of finding a case. She found one. An Incipio Lexington in grey leather... of course, they don't have it yet... Stumbled upon this one and boom! For $5, I don't care if she doesn't like it. I'd rather her use the damn iPad and have some sort of protection than let it sit and put on the white gloves every time she touches it.

Thanks for the pictures! I'm going to use mine as a temporary case until the speck ones arrive.

no prob!

I dunno if my wife will want a keyboard type case so maybe she can get one of those here soon and this one can sit on the shelf for all I care. If not though, at least maybe she won't be afraid to take it out of the house anymore!

I just got mine and tried it but the screen sleep function does not work at all... I do have it turned on in settings. How can I get it to work?

Edit: it's acting as if the magnet isn't strong enough to penetrate the bezel covering part... Because I tried taking the iPad out of the case and then the magnet action works. Ah well. You get what you pay for. Also there is no microphone opening as others have mentioned.

Look at post #48. I took a ballpoint pen tip and circled the magnet. Just curious if yours is the same (round)? The magnet in mine (black case) is very strong and works all the time. In fact mine shuts off the screen from about 1/2" before the case is fully closed. There must be many different versions of this case. Try shifting the cover around while it is closed and see what happens. Maybe readjusting the iPad itself while inside the case will better position it so the magnet functions.

is yours brown by any chance or a color other than brown? maybe blacks only have it

I received my $4.99 case today. It looks exactly like the pictures posted above except in brown instead of red. Yes, this is a cheap case, but it fits my new iPad well enough until I figure out which case I really want. I had to be so careful with my naked iPad. Even setting it down I was afraid of scuffing the back.

Thanks to the OP.

Got mine yesterday. "Smart cover" magnet doesn't work, but I don't care. I purchased it solely for when my 2-year old uses the iPad (she is absolutely addicted to it--which is becoming a bit of a problem!) I take the iPad to work everyday and i do not use a cover.

I got black and it looks fine. By the way, someone mentioned Amazon had the vertical one; they also have this horizontal one, and there are dozens of reviews, mostly positive. I got it there for $7.99, free shipping.

I attached a picture of where the magnet is in mine, it is round. The only time I can get it to work is if I use my finger to push the bezel cover out of the way, and obviously that makes it useless.

Mine is black, doesn't work.

Just for fun find something small and thin (like one of those tiny straws from the little juice containers) or roll up a small piece of paper towel and stuff it in the case edge where the magnet would meet which might push the iPad down just enough to bring the magnet closer to the sensor. Either your magnet is much weaker than the one in my case or it was mounted closer to the top edge of the cover than it should be and is missing the iPads sensor by a hair. The very top of the magnet is exactly 1/2" below the top edge of the case cover.

Dear TB07-NJ,
Thank you for telling us about this great deal. I bought it when it was 4.99, received it yesterday by mail and cannot be happier to see how cute the case is! Mine is a red, doesn't smell bad, my iPad 3 fits in very well, the magnet function works perfect.
Honestly I may keep it for long term used, I don't see why not.
Thanks again :)

Got mine today as well. Pretty decent case for the price.

The magnet is present on mine but doesn't seem to work. No big deal though I'm not worried about it on something this cheap.
