You're a liar. You won't notice a difference between the 64bit kernel and the 32bit kernel. All of your apps will still run the same regardless of the kernel.

Ok, wow. I was not expecting that. I have booted into both and did notice a difference. Check out macperformaceguide.com and you'll see that there is a difference. Huge? No. Noticeable? It is to me.

Issues...

I hear you, my main advice to you and everyone is to be cautious in upgrading, save yourself much needless aggravation, I myself wish I could have a Mac Pro and do things 'quicker' now the key element in all this is "quicker" if you do not have a reference point then how do you know if what you are working on is already speedy? it hard to tell unless you have had an older machine or an older version of lets say:Final Cut, and a rendition would often take ten minutes instead of ten seconds in today's machine? I've been most aggravated in situations like these because like yourself Im trying to squeeze the last penny and the last processing juice of our machines (nothing wrong with that, everyone does it) but we need to recognize the limitations of what we have, those thirty dollars for an a teeny bit of extra speed turn out a lesson in software abstractions and headache no less, it will happen from here to eternity, I've seen it since Jaguar, I have read enough posts with similar expression time and time again, I don't want to make you feel inadequate, I would like to direct you to the proper expectation and resolve. Now since you have posted more symptoms I can help you check a couple of things: Check to see if you Ram modules are properly installed, it you have two modules take one out and restart your machine, try it with the other, it could be a bad ram module, try also a Ram Zap (option+command+o+f) hold these while restarting, let go until you hear a second chime, check, if I remember anything else Ill post it for you.

Your post has issues. I get a headache just looking at that mess of a paragraph.

I jumped on SL from day one because of many updated features and whatnot. And to this day on both my MBP and Mac Pro I have not had a single issue. Admittedly I don't run 6 year old pieces of software or anything like that. CS3 was my only questionable item but it too has not bad any issues. I really am curious what software people are running that causes them to have such problems with SL. I really doubt its a driver issue considering the relative lack of hardware variety Apple has to support.

I've run into more compatibility problems in Vista/Windows 7 than I have SL. But then I don't run super old software/hardware in SL and I have been forced to try and use some old stuff with Vista/Win7 due to some custom work software.

My epson R200, R1900, and Workforce 600 work great under Snow Leopard, before 10.6.2 and the various printer updates, it was a different story. (And the R1900 is used with a spyder3pro calibrated 30-inch ACD and color reproduction is back to 10.5.8 goodness)

But printer driver overhaul was an announced big change in SL, so thinking there wasn't going to be bumps in that road is crazy.

I personally enjoy the 4GB of printers free'd from my computer, especially now that I am running with a 160GB SSD instead of a giant 500GB HDD.

The last early adaption I did was Windows 95 and I was running the beta on my work system with my boss' blessing.

Since then I've been more cautious. The same with SL. I waited for 10.6.2 before upgrading. The time between release and my upgrade allowed me to weed out potential trouble making programs and to get updates for the other applications. My early 08 Mac Pro has had 0 issues since upgrading.

Some issues people may have experienced is because there was no research. Prior to SL launch, there were sites detailing potential app issues. Also reviewing one's apps to see if they were PPC, Universal or Intel goes a long way to avoiding problems.

Issues and headaches...

its simple logic: if it gives you a headache then it is best not to read.
Listen folks, I'm sorry if my writing is hasty, but I'm doing about 4 video projects at the same time, so in between video renderings (Final cut) I try to give some advice, I don't have to but its good to help out, I try to be as economical as possible without leaving things out and I dislike writing to the point where I loose your attention so if my writing seems sparse its because I'm really am busy with work so avoid quoting items redundantly, I know what I wrote, lets stick to the thread and maybe we can help homeboy out, the key is to read these threads slowly, I've done it myself where I just scan through to see if it seems like the post has an answer, but we need to read thoroughly (you know like adults)

It's not about the writing, the problem is that you don't use paragraphs so all we see is a big mass of text. After a few lines it starts to get confusing.

Sounds like a editing partnership?

Feel free then to edit it so it can be legible, Im on a tight deadline, lol, just kidding enjoy your Sunday, I gotta render and run -so to speak- but you do understand the dilemma about the hastiness to upgrade without a formal testing process?

I got it...

I hear you and I will start implementing paragraphs, I see what you mean: if I peruse through the page up and down it can be chaotic, ok no prob. hopefully this will stop the headaches (no hard feelings) will check in later.

Wow! We got way off the topic posted by alleycat, but I will go back at it head on point by point:

* " its driver compatibility left a lot of be desired" I think you mean Epson's driver compatibility. It isn't up to Apple to make the OS fit every driver made.
* Gutenprint -- Not Apple's software. It's just a bandaid for some printers until the manufacturer gets the time to update the real driver.
* "desktop pictures would never remember" -- Sounds like a corrupt preference file.
* MS Office 2004 -- Not for OS 10.6, as other mentioned.
* "Office 2008 has less templates" -- Mine has no templates other than "Normal.dotm". 2004 has only "Normal.doc". I guess one can download templates?
* "sucks more than Office 2004" -- A generalization I can't agree with.
* "wasn't worth the $29 just for the use of Grand Central Dispatch or Quicktime X" -- Maybe that could have been foreseen? It's not really a new OS.
* "an OS which favors only the newest Macs" -- Well, yeah! That's what we want, progress. Apple customers said the same thing about OS 9.1. For older Macs, stick with an older OS. I have an old PowerMacG4 around here someplace. I'm not angry with Apple that it won't run 10.6

When I purchased this Mac the owner said it was Leopard not Snow Leopard which you're all talking about. Is my Mac running Snow Leaopard?

Mac OS X
Version 10.6.3

Where can I get this new OS?

Yes...that's Snow Leopard. The next maint release, or update would be 10.6.4 which is in testing now. That next major release has been dubbed 10.7. Others say it may be 11, but no one really knows, except Steve Jobs...

I'd guess that 10.6.4 would be out sometime at/around June/July [after the developers conference]. Again, just a hunch...the iPhone OS4, and new iPhone 4 [or whatever they're going to call it] is the next big thing...

Umm why is it Apple's responsibility to make your MICROSOFT Office 2004 or your EPSON printer work with Snow Leopard? Seems to me you should be bitching to Microsoft and Epson. Must just be me though.

Chef Jay

Apple likes to tote that their stuff "Just Works". Apple users generally pay for the luxury of not having to worry about printer drivers.

You already have it. 10.6.X is all Snow Leopard.

On a personal note... I have a first generation MBP. I upgraded it from Tiger to Leopard and that was a big change and I love it. My iMac I just bought came with Snow Leopard and it's great... but there's almost no difference. I have no intention of ever upgrading my laptop. I really don't think it's worth it as an upgrade, but there's no reason to downgrade that I can see.

Compatible software would hinder my decision to use Snow Leopard, but software developers should be the ones addressing the OS. I always thought that MS Office 2004 for Mac was already buggy on Tiger and Leopard. It's crappy software. I use OpenOffice.org.

Most I can plug and play. I've used Guttenprint before and it's been fine. If you have to download and install 1st party drivers from the manufacturer, not a big deal. Easier than an OS downgrade. These are probably the only issues you'll ever have with SL so it's likely better to just deal with them up front and enjoy.

I've given it a go for four painful months with Snow Leopard. While I enjoyed its speed, its driver compatibility left a lot of be desired. I couldn't use my Epson drivers for my printer,

:
My beloved Epson is printing what my camera sees again, no crashing from Office, and my desktop pictures remember where they left off. Yes Vista people I felt your pain, and will not again anytime soon. OS X 10.6 goes back on the shelf with my copy of Windows Vista. Neither of them could cut it on my Mac Pro.

Yes fanboys, flame on…

Somewhat independently, I decided to dump my old Xerox, HP, and Canon devices and go with a new Brother laser printer. I made the investment back in the first two months when I didn't have to buy HP or Canon ink jet cartridges. YMMV, but, keeping old devices can be a false economy.

I don't want to start a war here... Sorry you didn't like Snow Leopard; It's performance on my older macbook is terrible... Other than that, I loved the release and hope my SL experience will improve with new hardware.

At least the upgrade was on $29 for those who went back and not the full 128.:)

Yes fanboys, flame on…

What a troll. Makes a lot of absurd comments about SL that he probably knows are wrong, and then pretty much calls everybody who disagrees fanboys.

Nothing to see here people, move along. This guy obviously does not want our help or input. I'm sure he's actually running 10.6 with Office 2008, he just wants to see a flamewar. Nobody is this narrow minded. Or are they...

I just want to play devil's advocate here and be an ass.

Please go buy a new computer as yours is old as you stated you have a "first gen" Intel Mac. What is that from, 2005?

5 years old kind Sir.... Cars dont last that long, much less computers.

And MS Office 2004? Are you serious? Offie 2008 has been out for YEARS now... I would say upgrade but you might as well wait now since Office 2011 for Mac will be out soon.

:D I have no issues with Snow Leopard and never had. Never any Wi-Fi issues, never any speed issues, never any compatability issues.

But I get new computers at least every 2 years... and I only do clean installs of Operating Systems.... and I only use Apple Airport Routers.... And I have no problems ;)

Your disclaimer at the beginning did not keep me from raging. Cars last as long as you want them too.

Computers are the same, but they do become quite antiquated over time. A car doesn't need a new engine every year to run the newest petrol. That said, I just retired my PowerBook G4 after 6 years; it still works fine, albeit slowly. You don't always need to buy new sh*t.

His fanboy comment was out of line, but I share his sentiment about Snow Leopard.

I have a large family. We have 5 Macs in our house. My wife and I share a 2.66 GHz C2D AL iMac, my two older kids each have a 2 GHz C2D White iMac, and my younger two kids each have a 1.83 GHz C2D Mac mini.

I have always installed the new release of OSX with no problems, and admit it is my fault for upgrading all of our Macs on the same day to Snow Leopard. Apple made no statements that any of our Macs were not compatible with Snow Leopard.

Needless to say it was an unmitigated disaster! Each Mac suffered a problem, that was different from the others, that caused us to hate Snow Leopard. I spent 3 days downgrading to Leopard. It was a pain in the rear because all of the Mail databases had been upgraded and so on.

While I don't blame Apple for my folly of upgrading all machines on the same day, I certainly will not praise them for Snow Leopard!

My Honda is 6 yrs old and still going strong. Computers are a different story and newer OS releases may need newer hardware. But the two are not one and the same.

I just want to play devil's advocate here and be an ass.

Oh, you're right. I forgot that we use "number of templates" to quantify the value of software.

Great comment. But I am stuck with Excel 2004 due to it having macro support. I have also stuck with Word 2004 due to its less ill-conceived interface.

I don't suppose running all this ***** software helps but SL doesn't seem to thrive with lots of apps open like Leopard did. I have to restart a lot. I bought a new battery because I thought my 18 month old one was dying but I get almost the same time from my new one. 1.5 h is not enough.
