YES ...

GoodBye Circle hopefuls !!

While I don't think it's likely we will also see a round watch with this release, I'm not sure why you say it couldn't happen based on this. This only confirms the display area will be larger for the rectangular watch, not that there won't be a round version too, however unlikely.

The rendered graphics above also don't seem to account for the anticipated rounded corners which will cut into those pixel dimensions somewhat as well. And it's the rounded corners that set the display up for easily converting to a completely round display at some point in the future.

This is good improvements.
Personally though, I'm fine with my series 2. Probably will wait till series 5 or even 6, or at least until the LTE is useful with any carriers in any countries (if Apple decided to only sell LTE models).

As an old guy I am only interested in health tracking. Garmin products do such a good job of health tracking that I am concerned that I will loose data types with an Apple watch. Sleep is very important and Garmin uses heart rate to generate sleep info, How does the series 4 Watch do it?

That's a pretty big jump. Really excited about the new products this year! Probably gonna upgrade from my S3. It just looks too awesome not to. Can easily resell the old model to cover a good chunk of the cost of the new one.

Either the watch has a higher PPI or the watch is physically bigger because the rumor is for ~15% larger display in the same body size and this seems to be more than that.

I think it will be bigger. But who knows?

If they keep the case the same size and bump the display size up I think I'll drop to a 38mm. Pleasantly surprised my "Series 0" still has all-day battery life, at least since OS 3. Painfully slow as it is...

Well, websites and HTML email previews are going to look better on this thing now.

The article said it is both larger and has a higher PPI

For the non-Apple Fanboy if the watch is not physically bigger most people wont know about a 15% increase in the screen area. So if they did not buy or upgrade because it basically looked the same this wont do much to convince them now.

Until they either make a physically bigger watch or have a round option, big and small, they won't see a huge jump in sales. Nothing wrong with a steady flow. I am certainly not upgrading my series 3 but when the series 5 or 6 comes out for sure. By then I hope they have a round option. I still swap out for my larger G-Shock watches on occasion because I do like, larger and round watches.

I’ll buy series 4 when apple and T-mobile get their act together and support LTE in the Netherlands.

I’ll happily jump ship to whichever Dutch provider has the LTE models first to be honest.

They were making a guess. I was clarifying that if it's not higher PPI then the physical watch case itself might be bigger, not just the display, because that would seem to suggest a larger than 15% increase. But that was also a rumor, and all we have is a leaked photo which is difficult to figure out.

A commenter in 9to5's thread has the same thought as you.
He said: "This is how it would look like with 345PPI. So the Watch needs to be taller, or higher PPI, or you got the wrong resolution." To be fair, 9to5 did state they were guessing, but people seem to be taking that 345PPI as gospel not a guess.

Skipped S1-3, might consider a Series 4, but those Automatic mechanicals though, so nice!

I’ve held off on an Apple watch since it came out but, I might have to seriously consider purchasing a series 4 when they’re available after seeing renditions.

Meanwhile, the MacBook Pro's pixel density has not been improved since 2012. At least we know where Apple's priorities lie...

Is this actually, seriously a problem? I can't even see pixel edges until I get under a foot from the display. In normal use it's fine. However, it would be nice to be able to drive an @3X display down to @2X but with a smaller UI so you can fit more on the display if you wanted to. The thing is 95% of people would never do this so Apple is probably preferring to keep their margins high until 4320x2700 15" displays come down in price. They could go all weird on the scaling like the iPhone Plus but I think they prefer not to.

What I would rather have is a 120Hz refresh rate.

Come on. My MBP 2018 looks fine, the hate just needs to stop.

Really? If using the MBP at actual 2x retina, you get 1280x800 on the 13” and 1440x900 on the 15”. That’s ok for 2018?

I think in the past few years Apple has changed the default resolution to be scaled and not actual 2x, so you’re getting more real estate, but it would be nice if the actual display had high enough density to support those default resolutions @2x.

I still have my Apple Watch, original series, it still works very well and has held up to normal daily activity. I wouldn't wear it to work but its great for days off. I skipped the last three releases but I'll step up for a Series 4. The face mockups from a couple days back looked brilliant.

Ahh yeah, that's exactly what I was going to work out since we had pixels, PPI, easy to reverse engineer the physical display size (and compare it to the existing product). The "active display area" is definitely too large for the existing case - I guess if it's thinner, it's not like they're reusing the existing case anyway, so maybe it's slightly larger on the X and Y[?] or a little additional PPI and it would be easily accommodated in the same X/Y. I _feel_ like Apple's current design strategy is, more display, in less (or the same) area, so thinking the latter.

My first computer, the Amiga 500 had a resolution of 320x200.

I noticed your Workbench Shell avatar :D

The sleep button on the right is much longer than on the previous design, so there's a chance it could be a bit taller I think.
