custom watch faces and an always on display option are all that truly interest me with new watches. the only reason I'd consider updating to this is my series 2 applecare is running out soon

Why not 512×342? Then when someone makes a Mac Plus emulator for the Apple Watch it would be in a native resolution.

The Series 4 Likely won’t even make it to the shelves. The reality is, the 15% larger display, increased battery life, additional health sensors, and a higher resolution, all while being Compatible with the existing watch bands, it could be quite some time waiting for those who don’t pre-order.

They said that about the iPhone X and multiple sources claimed "severe" supply constraints. All of them were wrong.

Bought version 1, sold a month later
Skipped version 2
Skipped version 3

Version 4 sounds like worth buying

If you sold the series 1 one month later, not sure what the series 4 will offer you.

As a Series 2 owner, if the Series 4 offers additional health tracking — particularly as it relates to heart rhythms or blood glucose — it will be an instant preorder for me.

So the 42mm Apple Watch was never 42mm at all. Now I am to believe that the same form factor yields a significantly bigger watch??

I feel ripped off.

Yes of course it was always 42mm. 42.5mm to be exact.

Not sure if you're being serious or not... But it's called smaller bezels. The current 42mm had a 42mm screen. The new one will have a screen larger than 42mm in the same size body due to reduced bezels.

No it didn't. The watch case was 42.5mm tall. The display area was considerably smaller at 30.42mm tall.

These schematics are directly from Apple with my addition of the rumored 15% display area increase (but presumably with rounded corners):

I don’t get why people are getting so hyped for this. Is it the slightly larger screen, slightly higher res, or that new watch face? I didn’t feel like the screen size or resolution of the current watches was too small or low, and that new watch face looks hideous IMHO. What am I missing? To me the Series 3 seemed a lot more exciting.

Cool. Not enough for me to upgrade from s3. But if they add another nice feature next year it will be in the running.

I think more information at a glance is a good thing. I can see why people are excited for more screen real estate. But to me it isn't upgrade worthy. Not with how much value these things lose in their first year.

I personally feel the first Watch was underpowered out of the gate. Wife has had one and it's always been sluggish. Battery life is pitiful in comparison to others too. Some days she doesn't even get home from work before it's dead.

Meanwhile, the MacBook Pro's pixel density has not been improved since 2012. At least we know where Apple's priorities lie...

Wow took 7 posts for the first inane comment. Usually they start appearing around the second or third post.

Generation 1 product slower and has less battery life than generations 2, 3, and 4. Shocking. Next thing you’ll tell me is glass breaks when dropped.

That’s your subjective opinion. The people who are hyped feel it’s important.

I can’t wait till the iWatch 4 comes to Canada. I have a iPod 1, iPad 3, iPhone 5 & X. I’m missing the iWatch. Then I have the complete iSeries.

You’ll be waiting a long time for an iWatch. But if you want an Apple Watch 4 you can get one this Fall.

My post was a response to the statement that the s4 isn't likely to entice a person who returned their gen 1 watch a month after release.

I'm not dropping any bombshells. Just pointing out exactly why a person might refuse the gen 1 device even when it was new. And why a gen 4 device may make the person who didn't like the brand new gen 1 device happy.

You, on the other hand, have brought snarkiness where it's neither warranted or necessary. But I digress.

My came off my wrist when I dived into a water hole at a quarry last Monday. Series 2. Not happy about it, I'm rapidly trying to save something up to get a 4 though.

I can see why you’d be unhappy about being dumb enough to go diving before removing expensive electronics which could be lost. ;)

While I don't think it's likely we will also see a round watch with this release, I'm not sure why you say it couldn't happen based on this. This only confirms the display area will be larger for the rectangular watch, not that there won't be a round version too, however unlikely.

The rendered graphics above also don't seem to account for the anticipated rounded corners which will cut into those pixel dimensions somewhat as well. And it's the rounded corners that set the display up for easily converting to a completely round display at some point in the future.

The above is a proposal of perceived PPI and an overlay by someone that commented on the same topic over at 9to5Mac earlier.

Don’t worry Apple has got the real data and will figure it all out.

Round digital watch fans are like the new flat-earthers lol see what I did there twisting/flipping it around ;)

As an old guy I am only interested in health tracking. Garmin products do such a good job of health tracking that I am concerned that I will loose data types with an Apple watch. Sleep is very important and Garmin uses heart rate to generate sleep info, How does the series 4 Watch do it?
I have an app called SleepWatch that I've been happy with. I can't speak for how it compares to Garmin, but it does seem to get an accurate representation of my sleep patterns and total sleep I get.

I personally haven't gleaned any info from it though, honestly. As far as I can tell there's not much I can tangibly use for anything.

Apple's upcoming Apple Watch Series 4 models will feature larger displays thanks to reduced bezel size, and information 9to5Mac discovered in the most recent watchOS 5 beta suggests the 42mm Apple Watch will likely have a screen resolution of 384x480.

The current 42mm Apple Watch Series 3 model, for comparison, has a resolution of 312x390.

With the higher resolution (and increased PPI), Apple Watch Series 4 apps will be able to display more information at a higher resolution on the display, as shown in the example image below that were taken from a modified Apple Watch Simulator using a guesstimated PPI of 345.

As was seen in leaked marketing materials last week, the upcoming Apple Watch Series 4 models will feature at least one new watch face capable of displaying up to nine complications at one time.

Additional new watch faces could be included, and information taken from the beta suggests there will be new types of complications for Apple Watch apps to use.

Given the increase in resolution, third-party app developers will need to tweak their apps to work with the new Apple Watch Series 4 screen sizes.

I had the first (stolen) and the second edition (both no cel) and find the interface horrible WTF was Johnny and Co thinking? I will not buy another one. I am tempted to buy a Samsung S3 (a more intuitive interface with a beautiful round face an a round crown, a thousand times better). A square (well it's rectangular) face to a square (not very innovative) company?

This might end up being my first Apple Watch, everything sounds very good so far.

With the Series 3, the Apple Watch reached a point where speed and battery life weren’t something you worried about. It also made it independent of the iPhone with LTE.

A larger screen is a good step forward and a nice to have, but not a big enough advance to get Series 3 users to upgrade.

The next major advance in the Apple Watch will have to do with a conversational Siri. Having a humanlike assistant strapped to our wrists, a simple raise and speak away, is the dream. Siri on HomePod shows promise but I think we’re still a couple of generations away.

A commenter in 9to5's thread has the same thought as you.
He said: "This is how it would look like with 345PPI. So the Watch needs to be taller, or higher PPI, or you got the wrong resolution." To be fair, 9to5 did state they were guessing, but people seem to be taking that 345PPI as gospel not a guess.

<snip>

Either the watch has a higher PPI or the watch is physically bigger because the rumor is for ~15% larger display in the same body size and this seems to be more than that.
The mock-up images 9to5mac provides as taken from a “modified Apple Watch simulator” are not correct. The current display size for the 42mm watch is 24.3 x 30.4 while the new display size is 28.3 x 35.3 (given a ppi of 345 and the pixel resolution of 384 x 480). That’s about a 16% increase.

The mock-up images don’t correctly reflect the relative image sizes, the Series 4 image is too large. If I had to guess it probably instead represents 384 x 480 at 326 ppi. That’s about a 23% increase instead of the correct 16%.

Your last sentence doesn’t make much sense considering none of the features of the S4 have been reveleaed yet.

Do you mean the design of the S3 seemed more exciting? Because that wouldn’t make sense either.

The features of the S3 maybe? Wasn’t really a ton of exciting things.

It just doesn’t add up Lol. I for one am very excited to go from a Series 0 to a Watch that’s much faster, has more screen real estate (current one isn’t enough), new faces, longer batter, thinner?, and more that hasn’t been revealed.

Anyone used an Apple Watch over the long term for serious running and cycling? I’ve been using Garmin for years but the bugs do annoy me. Also anyone heard the rumours of a watch from Wahoo? Think it’s called the ‘Wahoo Rival’.

Still using my original watch and I’m still fine with the speed and battery life is fine for a day or day and a half. Only thing that annoys me is the missing update to watch OS5 now. Maybe I’ll wait to series 5.

Exactly. I'll be sticing with my Series 3 LTE variant. I see no reason to bother upgrading.
