Instantly? I doubt it. It takes my brand new Powermac g5 dual 2.0 about 10 seconds to start iDVD, and everytime I go to the Apple store I check the machines and they are all the same so unless your friend has a super iBook I doubt it starts iDVD instantly.

Ummmmm, mine took 3 secs to open up. :D

Mine takes 2 seconds after I've already opened it for the first time. Anyway what I am saying is that a G4 takes a lot longer to run these aps. and if Apple wants to come out with an easy, fast machine it needs to be a G5.

Interesting...

You are right about the iDAD start after a reboot (Tiger prerelease).

But Apple has lots of debugging/trace stuff in the prerelease.

I can't get to the iMac G5 running Panther 1.3.7 to try it there.

I agree -- a G5 & Super-drive, as a follow on for the, people who want to burn DVDs.

But, for starters, a G4 & combo drive seems right for those just starting the digital life-style.

This includes me-- I've had the capability for over a year & never have used iDVD (I have burned DVDs , tho)

headless mac should be...

A headless Mac should be an iPod...come to think of it an iPod is a headless Mac.
(I like the mockup...if they market the same as an iPod then my idea is even better! :p )

I like this design. Looks very nice. One thing I would change would be the slot-load design. Costs more, so more likely Apple would use a CD tray design.

Very cool design. The only thing I would change is to put the ports in the rear. That would keep it clean. Good call otherwise.

You can copy the "Home" directory and anything else you want to an iPod -- it is just an external firewire drive.

On mine, I run:

1) Jetty a Java J2ee servlet engine & web server
2) ColdFusion and BlueDragon web application servers
3) Derby database server

a complete, database-driven dynamic web site (that I can slip into my shirt pocket)

How can you disagree with a question? Thanks for coming out... :p

I interpereted your question as you saying they didn't do well. I'm sorry if this seems to have offended you in any way. If you do like them, great, because I obviously do too. I don't think I acted rude or anything. And thank YOU for coming out. Have a nice day.

Yea, I wonder where FireFox got it's design from...hmmm..........

YIKES! I hope you're not trying to imply that Firefox got its design from Safari... because that's absolutely wrong. Firefox/Firebird/Phoenix was in the works long before Safari was revealed.

sure you can copy it manually but you can't log into it running off the pod. This kind of feature would usher in the new phase of the ipod becoming the next generation of Mac (AppleII,Lisa,Mac,iPod)...its coming I don't know when but its coming.

I'm with you on this, iMac mini sounds too much like a toy, not the best impression of a capable yet small Computer.
It's not an eMac (CRT)
It's not an iMac (AIO)
What could be more basic for a basic box than... the Mac. :)

I'm another vote for Macintosh or Mac.
Like davey-nb said, this Mac has no head. Think of the "i" or the "e" as heads, and you get this new Mac as the "Mac."

Great idea, Macrobay.

Offended? Found it rude? Not in the least! I was just having some fun actually, so I'll apologize if you misinterpreted my post - you're actually the one who seems to be taking it a little too seriously, but that's cool. ;) I was just amused that you "disagreed" with my "question" (don't see that happening all the time!) and meant no offense in saying "thanks for coming out" - note the playful little pink guy sticking his tongue out like this: :p

As for the shuttles themselves, I was merely asking if they were still around, popular, etc., as I hadn't heard much of them lately.

All in good fun my friend, no worries...

i think the headless imac is a great concept.the 1.25 ghz will be fine, but its hard to convince windos morons that 1.25ghz on a mac is easily as fast as 2.5ghz on a dell.i also think if the headless imac is 1.25ghz the emac needs a 1.5ghz just so theyre not the same computer.

I don't know why you couldn't install OS X on an iPod & boot from it-- no different than any other external Firewire drive.

I haven't tried it, but I boot all the time from external (Lacie) Firewire drives -- this is just a different (Apple) make of drive.

Just for drill, tomorrow I will install OS X on the iPod & see what happens.

nah no worries.... I just went back and reread your post.... I don't think I even realized it was a question. :) No offense taken.... it is funny, now that I think about it. :)

Structurally yes, it was in the works for a long time....but the interface?? and the google built in, to the left of the address bar? C'mon.

I willmake this my last reply as talking about ipods belongs elsewhere (if we are not going to discuss their possibility of becoming the next headless mac - which I know is stretching it)...but it is unwise to boot of an ipod the drive is not made for it and perhaps one of the reasons why Apple do not support it and pulled the synced Home folder on the ipod a while back.

I am off to donate to the relief fund for South East Asia.... :)

Even the base model with 256megs of ram should be able to run tiger and photoshop fine my 900mhz ibook has no problem with panther or photoshop.

Counter: can you add search engines to the built in search bar? (See below)
Can you add in extensions such as adblocker among a few other hundred extensions already available? Can you theme your browser? (You want to think different right?) Don't you even suggest that FireFox ripped off Safari. Just about every feature in Safari has been done by someone else well before it came on the scene. I'm starting to get a bit irked by some Mac users who think everything came from Apple. God didn't create the Heavens and the Earth he just ripped off the idea from Apple.

Damn Straight!

But seriously, Safari basically is a blantant ripoff of Firefox, albeit with a different rendering engine, and a few Apple touches.

So don't even try to argue it.

Back onto the topic of the headless iMac, I'm pretty convinced this is either fake (which I doubt, as I trust Think Secret), or that the eMac will be discontinued (which also doesn't make all that much sense, but whatever), so the person who said the eMac needs to then become a 1.5 GHz.. Forget that.
