Thank you, QUOTEjiv3turkey748 because if I were to buy one of these it needs to run Tiger and orther apps nicley (how could you compare it to an P4 2.8 512 MB ram 400 and gfx 5200 ??)

i hope apple comes out with some cheaper monitors even if a lot of the ppl that are buyin mini imacs already have monitors because it would be nice to be able to get a normal sized monitor thats made buy apple plus a beatiful white apple will look horrible with some cheazy windows monitor

It would be very nice. Unfortunately, I doubt it, as it doesn't make much sense in terms of pricing.

I don't believe Apple could make even a 15" monitor for the price of 500 dollars, and anything above that would be stupid, as you don't want to pay MORE for a monitor than a computer (unless you're a graphics professional and can justify it ^_^)

Umm... I was running Firebird with a little google search field on a windows machine before Safari came out...

I believe the Phoenix/Firebird/Firefox project is older than Camino (although I could be mistaken), and I'm absolutely positive Camino was around before Safari. The Google search thingy isn't that new of a development.

ive heard a lot of people complain about the headless imac only have 256 megs of ram but i think for a $499 computer 256 is fine but their more expensive computers need 512

Headless iMac? This I cannot aesthetically conceive!

Hey there kids,

Headless iMac indeed. What on earth would it look like? At the risk of sounding sickeningly simple, will it have a screen built in? I don't feel like forking out for a $1000+ monitor. I'm sure potential Mac customers from the Dark Side would feel the same way too.

Thanks kids, and happy new year (already!!)

i think apple can make a cheap crt monitor for around $200
monitors these days are pretty cheap (around $90)

Counter: can you add search engines to the built in search bar? (See below)
Can you add in extensions such as adblocker among a few other hundred extensions already available? Can you theme your browser? (You want to think different right?) Don't you even suggest that FireFox ripped off Safari. Just about every feature in Safari has been done by someone else well before it came on the scene. I'm starting to get a bit irked by some Mac users who think everything came from Apple. God didn't create the Heavens and the Earth he just ripped off the idea from Apple.

Woah. No need to get too caught up in this. I agree with you that Firefox didn't rip off Safari (I was the person who said that in the first place), but there's no reason to take this too personally. Some Mac users are used to being exposed to these feataures by Apple first, and therefore associate the new features with a certain Apple product. It's really not that bad of a mistake. Some people thought that Fast User Switching was a brand new idea when Apple introduced it in OS X 10.3. Those of us who use Windows, however, know that XP has had it since the beginning. These windows users, however, would be at fault to assume that MS came up with it though, because such features had been available in linux before. No reason to bite off peoples' heads for merely associating a "new" feature with their first experience of said feature. Let's simply point out the error and move on.

*note* I hope I don't sound too condescending or anything. This is all fun and games. Don't want anybody to get hurt.

I'm actually quite glad that Apple DOESN'T ship with very much RAM.

Their RAM costs so much, it's far cheaper to upgrade with Crucial: thus I order my macs with the least installed amount of RAM possible, dump the Apple RAM, and install Crucial RAM.

I think the general idea among those talking about higher RAM baselines is that Apple wouldn't charge much more either. Apple can surely afford to give 512MB of RAM to people buying a $1900 iMac for the same price. They should really be able to give all iMac purchasers (even those getting the $1300 one) 512MB of RAM for the same price or a slight baseline bump (let's say $30) instead of charging horrendous amounts for an optional upgrade.

On a side note, I also think the smart thing to do when buying a Mac is to get the least RAM and upgrade manually, but this isn't feasible with certain systems. Increasing the built-in RAM on the Powerbooks would be nice, because doing so would delay the priority a RAM upgrade would get (as far as my wallet's concerned) and would increase the maximum RAM configuration by 256MB. This would also be true if this headless Mac ends up having some embedded RAM and a free slot (like I believe iBooks and Powerbooks are handled).

If people were to get a nice LCD with this one they better but an DVI port and not a VGA. Since this comp is directed on the switcher people they would most proberly have an LCD now allready but to get an sub $500 LCD wold be nice of apple to give to the newbies (like me)

Now that Tiger will be introduced soon Apple should upgrade all of their models to have 512MB standard for better performance even tough it goes with 256. Will Apple give Tiger for free to the once that puchase a computer in january ??

It will look a bit like an iPod - isnt that obvious? White slab, 2" thick, or less. 14" wide, 10" deep. Or close to that. It WONT fit in a rack - that would be too much to ask.

I find it amusing when people talk about how much it will cost to equip this new iMac. $499 is the price of entry - everyone will then get a monitor and ram and what-all else, but they will ONLY remember the price of the computer - $499. Thats what we consumers are like.
If Apple is serious about market share, this is what they MUST do.

I will buy one, because I have a 17" LCD that I use with my powerbook.

ya i agree and i think the new imac will have an empty slot so people can upgrade their ram

I agree. I myself remember the costs of my peripherals for my PC only because I spent weeks researching every component I have. My dad never remembers what he spent beyond the sticker price attached to the computer. That goes whether or not a monitor comes in the package. Most of us are perfectly fine with canibalizing former setups for older components. I have 3 15-inch CRTs, a 15-inch LCD, and a 17-inch CRT just lying around along with a myriad of networking cards, mice, keyboards, old video cards, etc. just sitting here for new/old computers to use. Sure not everybody has the same collection of stuff, but most at least have some extra monitors, keyboards, mice, and speakers lying around. The headless Mac will probably include everything but a monitor, which really won't matter to most.

ehhh, that would be "right" of the address bar...but then again, google toolbar had that setup before anybody else.

so i guess firefox copied safari copied google, huh?

You have a point. (Just note that firefox didn't actually copy safari. That feature became implemented shortly after many users started using Google toolbar extensions on firebird)

I dunno. Firebird had a built-in search bar a long time ago. I'm not sure if it was before the Google toolbar or not, but it was certainly before Dave Hyatt started working on Safari.

I saw advertising of headless imac in Icreate magazine.

the link will be

www.apple.com/g5mini

doesn't exist yet...I saw the pic...it is like g4 cube...but it is round...

This sounded good until you said the link would be "g5mini". Are you suggesting it's a G5, then, and not a G4 like every other source is reporting?

Right. Like I said a few posts above, Firebird had it before Safari was ever announced. I'm almost positive that it was implemented in Firebird in response to users making extensions to duplicate the Google toolbar.
