Price. Apple can never make enough off a computer like this. Just think about the iPod. I just paid $600 for an iPod Photo. Do you really thik they will sell a comp. for less than that?

With the low end e-mac being $799.00 & Apple is probably due for a price drop or a discontinuation with this model I could see how it would be possible. The hardware is not the latest & the cost should be low to make one of these.

Apple has the highest profit margin in the industry. They seem to be able to make an acceptable (25-50% gross) profit on a $249 iPod.

They will do this on the iMac media-center (or it will never see the light of day):

With the G5 iMac out do you really think Apple will go backwards and do THIS. I could see it if they came out with a headless G5 imac for $800 to $1000 but a G4 iMac. I just don't think it will fly. I just asked a Windows user friend of mine if they would pay $500 for an iMac without a screen and they said no way, it's the "all in one" that makes me want to have one.

You and I are one the same page brother. That's what I have been trying to tell these people.

It all depends on what [you think] you are buying-- the $600 iPod photo flew off the shelves (2-3 week backlog).

I don't think Apple will market this as a computer, rather as a iLife solution.

If you can organize (Tiger Spotlight) all your stuff and do the digital lifestyle & internet things-- $499 is nothing (to someone who just bought a Bose or an Plasma HDTV)

Wow, what a thread

hey, first time posting...thought id post the mock-up i made today...

OK I'm with ya, for this reason I would buy. But I'm not switching from a Windows machine. This would be only an extention to my Powermac kind of like an Airport express.
My point is it could NEVER be my main system and I still think Apple will never do it for $500 or less.

I agree 100% with the reason for buying!

I think Apple can do it-- depends on if they want to!

It may sell good at first but after a couple of months it will fizzle to a dud.

Exactly. Fizzle like Drizzle Forizzle. It would just be a quick fad for Apple users, then die and Apple knows this.

I've been reading some discussions around the web about this, and I keep seeing people say that Apple shouldn't do this because "they just can't compete with Dell on pricing". Well, I went on over to Dell's site and priced out the cheapest PC I could find and yet still have similar features that the suggested headless-iMac is supposed to have.

Here's what I came up with: $565.

Then you tack on the $99 shipping fee for a grand total of $664. Keep in mind that shipping from the Apple Store is free.
Fine, but let me also share that I personally purchased a computer from Dell for $350 a little over a year ago. And it ran Office and Quickbooks a lot faster than my PowerBook G4 too.

I think a $500 Mac is a great idea. I just hope they have value-priced displays to go with them. As long as it runs Tiger and iLife '05 decently well, I think people will love it.

What you miss is what the techies will do with the box (a neat server).

For chrissakes, they have uCLinux running on an iPod.

I think that the time is right & Steve has proven that he has the stones to do it!

My hats off to you guys. You seem so knowledgeable about macs and how to market them; what sells. You guys also seem to have a sixth sense in predicting the long term sales projections.

It won't be able to. My daughter's iMac G4 takes like 5 minutes to start iDVD up. and iPhoto is real slow.

You have some serious problems-- you can start a G3 in much less than that, I think iDVD is not supported on a G3, tho.

Seriously, boot from your OS X install CD & run disk utility:

repair

&

repair permissions

on the drive

Instantly? I doubt it. It takes my brand new Powermac g5 dual 2.0 about 10 seconds to start iDVD, and everytime I go to the Apple store I check the machines and they are all the same so unless your friend has a super iBook I doubt it starts iDVD instantly.

I like this design. Looks very nice. One thing I would change would be the slot-load design. Costs more, so more likely Apple would use a CD tray design.

iMac G5 takes about 2 sec to get the Open Project dialog

I always repair permissions and know how to do it. But thanks for the tip.
