I have just installed os x el capitan with beta 2 version. it is definitely faster significantly compared to os x yosemite both within its monitor and with external 60 hz 4K monitor, but still there is a lag with UI with the 4k external monitor. I connect to my Dell UP2414Q monitor via mini dp to mini dp cable and make sure display port 1.2 enabled, i check with the monitor that it runs at 60 hz but still there is lag, and i feel that it runs at 30 hz rather than 60 hz.. It might be due to the cable i am not sure but other than that i tried everything...

Well I guess it's time to face that the Iris 6100 isn't up to the job.

The only thing left for me is to try mini dp to dp cable, as i have noticed from the threads that my mini dp port on dell up2414q is display port 1.1a version

I just bought the Dell P2415Q monitor. I recently bought a refurbished Macbook Pro early 2013. I didn't realize it until I starting trying to plug this monitor in, but my Macbook has no input for the DP. The early 2013 Mac only has input for HDMI and 2 thunderbolt ports. And upon looking closer I discovered that my Macbook can only support up to 2560 x 1440 resolution. I have a couple of questions if anyone is up to answering.
Do you know if it is possible to use this monitor with my MacBook Pro? Can I just use it at this lower resolution? Are there any instructions available as to how to set it up with the lower resolution. How can I connect the DP to my Mac? Am I better off to send it back and buy a different monitor better suited to the specs of my older Mac. If any readers have any suggestions, I could sure use the help. Thanks

Rony you may buy a mini dp to regular dp cable which supports thunderbolt as well. you may try startech brand mini dp to dp cable.

Can anyone confirm that P2415Q works correctly under Yosemite at 52 Hz (using SwitchResX) on 2013 or 2014 rMBP 13"? I'm asking, because I saw some posts saying that it worked without issues on Mavericks, but not on Yosemite.

I was saying that it didn't work well on Yosemite, but with recent version of SwitchResX, it was fixed, it works very good. Also latest beta for El Capitan works well good as well (but you have to disable rootless first). Great product!

Ive upgraded to El Capitan from Yosemite and cannot disable rootless, more over i have no Security option in Recovery boot. How did you do it?

You can see here the screenshot (attached) showing 1080p HiDPI on Mac Mini (late 2012) with Yosemite.

Again, it is a scaled resolution, which means it isn't as beautiful as a real 1080p HiDPI.
The most beautiful I can get with Mac Mini is 720p HiDPI
Hello. Have you upgraded to El Capitan? Is it working for you the 4k 52hz?
I can't make it work with my mini, dell p2415q and El Capitan!

Take a look at this http://www.madrau.com/support/support/srx_1011.html, you'll need to install custom resolution again.
I know about that...
Really frustrating topic. I follow the steps, and I get 4k 52hz working for some minutes. After that, once I restarted, the screen goes black forever...a nonsense since it was working before the restart in crispy 4k 52hz...

It's working on Mid-2014 MacBook Pro 13" with El Capitan and exactly same monitor running at 50 Hz. Laptop has the same hardware as Mid-2014 Mac Minis.

yes, it's something strange, because the mini users, we have to have two wires plugged to the monitor to make it work in 4k (hdmi + dp). Nothing to do with mst...just is the only way to make it work...at least in yosemite. Something is different in the hardware or in the operating system (I guess the second) between they both machines, to behave different like that.
could you tell me your parameters in switchresx? Just to try one last time with el capitan...till someone gives a solution or till someone releases an external usb 3.0 4k-60hz graphics cards compatible with macos (right now they exist only at 30hz)...they are tiny, cheap and at the end I guess I will buy one to fix the problem.

Sure, it's here: #196

Why two wires? One single DisplayPort cable is enough.

why? I don't have the answer, but trust me, I checked many threads and is the only solution we, the owners of the mini, found to make it happen. Otherwise macosx rejects the setup and the screen gets black forever. I guess is a bug in the system or who knows...
is really weird and disappointing...
So, could you send to me a screenshot or simply the values in order? I would appreciate a lot.
Thanks for your answers!

Hi I need some advise.

I just read thru this whole forum and people seem to be getting different experiences. So I just have a few questions (and i cant find clear answers) as I plan to buy a 4k monitor.

First, my unit: Late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro running El capitan.

4k monitors that are available for me to buy are: Dell UP2414Q and Dell P2415Q.

So here are my questions:

1. Which monitor is better for me? Both in terms of the product it self (quality, ports, etc.) and compatibility with my machine.
2. Which cable to use? everyone seems to saying mini-dp to dp is the way to go. Is there only one kind? or is there some specs i should look out for?
3. With out the help of switchresx, what is the best resolution I can run on the 4k display at Retina Mode? (can i run in my native 2560x1600 @ 60hz? How bad (or good) does this look? Is its usable? maybe i can lean towards the "more space" in the display setting since its a much bigger screen and text might appear to big)
4. Given that switchresx is my only option, will i be able to run the 4k @ 50someting hz that most people are using (and are quite satisfied) in this threads? Ive read that switchresx doesnt play well with el capitan (need to boot to recovery partions and disable some stuff and also some issues when rebooting i think?)
5. Also, what is the highest possible resolution that i will be able to run at 60hz? Will i be able to use retina mode (@2x) at this resolution?
6. Im not a very technical person but im willing to tinker with terminal to get switchresx working and make my display usable if it is necessary. But I need my laptop to be mobile as I use it both at work and at home. So the question is, will i need to disable SIP every time (probably everyday) i plug it into my external monitor?? I really hope that is not the case. and does this affect my laptop display when its NOT connected to the monitor?
7. Lastly and most importantly, How is the performance of this setup?? I plan to use it in clamshell mode if that matters. Ive read a reply saying its "extremely choppy" but everyone else doesnt seem to have any complain. But the fact that its not natively supported means we are pushing the chips to the limit? so how well does this really work? I dont do much games. I do edit photos a little (pixelmator, sketch), a lot of office work (excel, word), and consume a lot of media (movies and music).
8. small side question, if i ended up buying this and failing to use it properly as a monitor. How well will it work as a 1080p TV? how will PS4 and cable tv look here? (better or worse or same as regular LED TVs?)

I AM VERY SORRY for the barrage of questions. Its just that this is quite an investment (this is really gonna hurt my wallet and there is absolutely no return/exchange policy in my country) and I want to make the most of my purchase.

Hope anyone could help and Thanks for you help in advance!

1. Definitely the P2415Q. The other one is more or less the same screen, but an older model. It is probably a bit more professional (has a wider gamut of color), but in general terms has older technology. The most important: the P2415Q is SST capable of 4k-60hz, while the UP2414Q is only capable of the same via MST (so two DP wires, compatibility problems and, for you, impossible to achieve via your macbook).
2. In my case, the cable provided by dell was not working(p2415Q), but for the mac mini apple did something in the os the make things difficult to us. It should work miniDP to miniDP cable provided. Otherwise, buy a new one anywhere...If you use HDMI, the output will be limited to 30hz in 4k.
3. You can get 4k-52hz. It is crispy and very fluent. Is usable (I am using it right now to write this reply down). I am only changing the resolution to 1440p when programming, in order to have more real estate, and to avoid the SLIGHT lag of the editor (PHP Storm) when working in 4k(1080p HiDpi actually). Really the system has no lags at all. Probably, only if you are used to suuuper smooth animations, you will feel something. Only some frames are dropped and is not as smooth as in 1440p, for example, but nothing so annoying. Lower than 4k resolutions look a bit blurry, but if you change the sharpness option in the menu of the screen, you will improve this. Really, I don't feel it so bad when working at 1440p.
4. About switchresx and el capitan, you just need to restart in recovery mode and type in a command (csrutil disable), in order to create new custom resolutions after restarting. Once created, you can leave everything as it was (csrutil enable). For me, I am having problems with el capitan and 4k, but this only applies to mac mini...macbook users haven't complained about that, according to what I have been reading in these threads.
5. No idea, for me is 1440p-60hz. There are more available resolutions in switchresx, higher, but I can't enable them. But I don't think you will need more real estate in the screen...you will get blind! ;)
6. No. You just need to disable security yo create new custom resolutions, as I wrote before. So, once created, you just can leave this option as it used to be, and that's it. When you need to plug your screen, just choose the resolution from the list and it should work.
7. I wrote sthg before, but I insist, my mini (the same hardware that your macbook has inside) works really fluent. Ok, the scroll sometimes in heavy web pages is not butter smooth, neither some OS animation are as fluent as in 1440p, but really, the average is really good. No heating, nothing. Some people can't bear this lack of smoothness, though.
I am really happy with the screen p2415q. I love watching this screen, crispy like the imac 5k, beautiful design. For me, the only problem right now, is that el capitan doesn't let me achieve the 4k, gets black! So I stay in yosemite whilst, or I will buy a 4k-60hz usb 3.0 displaylink external video card (when they release them) to solve that.
I hope I helped with my answers. Any further question, just let me know!

about no 3. you can get 4k-52hz WITHOUT switchresx??

also you mention el capitan doesnt let you achieve the 4k, is this true only for your case (mac mini) or is it true for me as well?

and can you post a screen shot of your switchresx settings?

By the way, thanks A LOT. :)

No. Without switchresx, you can get 4k-30hz only via hdmi (as it is said in apple support page about 4k). Macosx detects the display via dp like a 1440p screen. I am always talking about mac mini, but I insist, the setup is the same.
For you it should work. If you check the answer 217 in this thread, the user has the same setup (rmbp 13, p2415q, el capitan), and for him it is working. For mac mini, I guess apple doesn't want to let people to have a cheaper alternative to imac 5k and they are banning us... :(
Is the same message that I told you, you have this setup, but googling, you will find several (and more accurate, since you can get almost 52hz and the user is using less than 50, I can remember... Actually, you just need to modify the clock speed to 450mhz (to limit of your graphics card) and put the resolution to 3840x2160...the rest of the parameters I think you can leave them as default. But check through the forums, I can't take a screenshot right now, since I don't know where to upload it to.
You are welcome! Have a nice day!

works great with my p2715q and Macbook Pro 13" Retina late 2013 running swithresx and custom resolution.

Anyone able to get any more scaling options though? I can only get 2x scaling option which makes it like a 1080p screen size wise. I'd like to get a 1.5x option, is that possible?

Are you on El Capitan as well? Everything running well so far? :)

I'm still on Yosemite, seems great to me, my eyes cant seem to tell the dif between ~51hz vs 60hz.

Only thing is I'd love to be able to scale to 1.5x or something similar to "more space" on the macbooks
