As was the case with iPhone 13 Pro models released last year, 4K ProRes video recording on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max still requires a model with at least 256GB of storage, according to Apple's tech specs for the devices.

ProRes video recording is limited to 1080p at 30 frames per second on iPhone 14 Pro models with a 128GB storage capacity. To record ProRes video in 4K at 30 frames per second, a model with a 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage capacity is required.

A footnote on Apple's press release announcing the iPhone 14 Pro models:
iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max support ProRes video recording in the Camera app at 1080p 30 fps with the 128GB storage option, and up to 4K 30 fps with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options.
The lack of 4K ProRes video recording support on 128GB models is likely due to the 4K videos having very large file sizes. Apple says a one-minute 10-bit ProRes video is approximately 1.7GB in 1080p and approximately 6GB in 4K.

Introduced on iPhone 13 Pro models, ProRes refers to a family of codecs from Apple that can compress videos into smaller file sizes with "impressive image quality preservation." Apple says ProRes is designed as a final delivery format for high-quality videos like commercials, feature films, and broadcasts.

ProRes video recording is still not supported at all on the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus.

In general, I don’t mind Apple offering lower end storage options (I personally don’t even need 64GB) -- but locking Pro features away (even though it might be understandable due to the file size of ProRes) doesn‘t sit right with me. This is a fully advertised Pro-feature, and if I as a customer buy an “iPhone Pro” model I expect all advertised “Pro” features.

I remember some old keynote where Jobs took pride in mentioning that this is available on every iPhone. Likely a jab at the fragmented Samsung lineup back then where some features would depend on the type of chip, even when phones had same names.

Exactly! This isn’t like buying a MBP and getting a slower charger, you can still do everything with it. In this case you can’t.

What’s even the point of selling a low capacity phone that can’t even use the camera? The 128 should’ve never been part of the line up. I would rather that they added a 2TB tier for the real power users and started at 256. If the 128gb cant have feature parity with the other sizes, don’t bother selling it!

In all the recent macrumor articles they really omitted a crap load of features on the regular 14 and 14 plus that the pros are getting. I’m surprised they’re giving them at least some of the upgraded camera features/lenses. I wanted to trade in my back up regular 13 to put an iPhone 14 plus in that position(sold my primary 13 pro max and getting the 14 pro max next week). I do think that the plus being much lighter than the max is a good feature though. But the plus price point of $900 makes it weird to be only a $100 difference compared to a base 6.1 pro

There is nothing morally corrupt about offering 128GB. Not everyone plans on shooting 4K.
I have an iPhone XS with 256GB and upgrading to an iPhone 14 Pro with the same storage. I figured after all these years on the XS and still having 150GB free I’d be okay sticking with 256 and with having Photos optimize storage. If I need more, well I’ll just have to up my storage next time then.

So to the point of those with 128GB. I’m sure there are plenty of users where that is more than enough storage and is why Apple continues to offer that.

Don’t call it Pro then. You can’t be a „little“ Pro. That’s a contradiction of the word in itself.

I don’t get these „but not everyone needs 256 GB of storage“ people. What if it is the same price though? I doubt people would be like „I demand a phone with less storage since I won’t be using half of it!“.

Remember people … we had 16 GB once upon a time. I am sure people were also like „but 8 GB is enough“

In German you would say „einen geschenkten Gaul, schaut man nicht ins Maul“

EN: you don’t look a gifted horse in the mouth

Don’t actually know where it is coming from haha

While I agree with most that the base should be at least 256 (honestly, 512 for a “pro” model), the ability to record in 4K ProRes would leave a ton of 128 users extremely upset when just 10 minutes of filming fills up 50% of their phones entire storage. This includes all of the storage for photos, apps, and the operating system itself.

So they’re probably right to just avoid it, but wrong to offer such a paltry amount for 1100 USD.

There are plenty of customers who don’t care about ProRes video. For them the baseline 128gb model will suffice. No big deal. It does suck when you don’t know about this and just ordered the baseline model. Luckily for them they can return it and buy the 256gb version. It’s really a first world problem imo.

Surprised to see ANYONE defending the move, honestly. The issue isn't that they offer 128gb as base. The issue is they disallow the user to decide how to use that 128GB.

On the "upgrade cycle" this year, and carriers are offering $1k with trade in, so we were going to do pros all around, but dropping another $100 per device seems silly. On the other hand, seems silly not to, which I am sure is the marketing thought process too.

The fact that they are selling the base model with 128gb is ridiculous still. Upsell away. Pro device that you have to upgrade to use all the Pro features.
128 GB is the sweet spot for me. I’m not into video production, so it’s plenty of space for me. This base config is for people like me who enjoy the extra functionalities on the Pro lineup, but that don’t use the camera for professional uses (which is all in all a very small margin of the users, I believe).

I would of course be glad to get 256GB of base storage for the same base price, but if I would have to pay more, I prefer the option of just having 128 GB for less.

So I am fine not getting ProRes 4K, would never use it anyway
