Unless you know the technical reason for needing ProRes you’re likely better off using a third party video app with lossy compression turned OFF. You’ll get way better quality than stock without the massive ProRes file sizes necessary for post production.

The stock camera video mode uses lossy compression which does have a noticeable degradation in quality vs lossless compression. I wish Apple had a mode for this in the stock camera settings.

ProCamera lets you turn on lossless video compression. Give it a go.

I just looked online - prores is measured at 1.7Gb/s. Depending on the capabilities of the NAND Flash, it's very possible this is a hardware limitation and not a software one.

But then, as others have pointed out, how is that a "Pro" device? If you're a pro, you'll most likely be shooting in 4k. Rather than disabling the feature, let the user decide how they want to fill up their own device.
pro photographers

BTW steven soderbergh shot Unsane using iPhones before ProRes existed on the iPhone. you can still shoot 4k without prores.

What’s even the point of selling a low capacity phone that can’t even use the camera? The 128 should’ve never been part of the line up. I would rather that they added a 2TB tier for the real power users and started at 256. If the 128gb cant have feature parity with the other sizes, don’t bother selling it!
you can absolutely use the camera. pro photography.

iPhone 14 Semi-Pro? Or iPhone 14 Pro Min
Hell, they could call it that. Or drop the make the starting price of the 128GB to $899 (128GB Pro 6.1) and $999 (128GB Pro 6.7) then.

Pro Max
128 - 999
256 - 1199
512 - 1399
1TB - 1599

As expected.

I'd rather not pay the extra $100 for a 256GB model in which I won't use the extra storage or 4K ProRes feature, and if the base model was 256GB and $1,099 (and wanted to buy a Pro), I'd have no option.

Nonsense. This is a company that is serving its shareholders, while employing hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Its REASON FOR BEING is to make money for stakeholders and provide consumers with products they want.
Then they would provide a 128gb storage phone that can shoot 4k prores.

Stop making excuses for Apple. You owe them nothing.

I did not see the importance of 10 bit until I started using Dcinilike on my DJI drone. I must confess that I chose the 256GB model due to the fact my 128GB 12mini only has 30gb left, so I would have been quite upset if like most people I did not read the small print and landed myself with a 128gb model. Maybe when choosing the base model, they should pop up a message with what it can't do, because I thought Pro meant pro, not pro meant pro if you pay £200 more.

I've seen a lot of posts defending Apple but this one really takes the biscuit.
'Its REASON FOR BEING is to make money for stakeholders and provide consumers with products they want'

Which quite frankly they are not doing for anyone that purchases a 128GB Pro. If they truly believed it wasn't a big deal they'd be completely open and transparent about a 128GB Pro not supporting 4K ProRes and make it very obvious upfront rather than burying it in some asterisk driven small print.

The fact that they are selling the base model with 128gb is ridiculous still. Upsell away. Pro device that you have to upgrade to use all the Pro features.
Totally agree. Flash memory is not expensive, and limiting certain features of their flagship device just seems non-sensical, even if the feature will only be used by few.

Starting the Pro line-up at 256GB would make for a bigger point of difference from the standard iPhone 14 too.

The fact isn't buried somewhere in small print where a user has to hunt all over the place to find it. It is located on the tech specs page for the phone in the same sized print as the other words.

I agree about the memory for sure as apple doesn’t attach value to storage variances when trading in

I can’t believe I have to clarify that I meant “can’t use the camera to its full capabilities as was intended for the iPhone 14 Pro Lineup” but here we are
photographers absolutely can.

if you're going to say "but every pro should be able to do its full capabilities" well then not even a 256GB will allow you to record 4k prores for one hour as some pros need to record professional interviews.

I think at this point the cost for Apple to put a 128GB chip or a 256GB chip into their phone is about the same. The only reason they still keep that 128GB around could be that with inflation, if they want to keep their profit up, they would have to bring the price of their phone up. They known that people would probably go for the 256GB regardless, so they just put the 128GB out there at the original price for marketing purposes.
