That's an even better reason to increase the base storage. Do you know how many people I have to do tech support for because they buy the base model iPhone and then can never upgrade to a new iOS version (even iOS 9 the other day) or I have to help them dump photos and videos to a computer? They're just so confused because they don't know what GBs mean to them. If their phone has advanced capabilities they expect to be able to use them without a popup about their storage running low always bothering them. Even the first iPhone came in a 16GB capacity and it's almost 2016 now!

This is unacceptable. You can't double video file sizes and even 12mp Live Photos are twice as big as a regular 12mp photo which itself is bigger than an 8mp photo. Live photos and 4K are defaults and if they're setup as defaults then they should have good default hardware to support them. The long-term damage that it does to the Apple brand being perceived as difficult to use and incapable by average users surely isn't worth the small cost savings per device shipped over the long-term.

You raise a valid point. The apple ownership mantra was that apple took the tech decisions away and provided you with a device that just worked. With then 6S they found a sly way to increase the price by $100, though sadly many are going to get caught out, and it's people like you that see this frustration.

They should have raised the price by $100 and raised the base model to 32GB

This is Apple's way of effectively raising the price of iPhone by $100 without you even knowing it. This forces users to buy at the least a 64GB model of they want to do anything more than what a grandma would use their iPhone for.

I would have thought grandmas would be amongst the biggest users of video, catching all those special moments with grandkids.

I'm in the camp that expected more from the base storage in this device.

That said, this is absolutely a way for them to get an extra $100 out of MANY customers, which is almost all pure profit.

I remember when Apple would give you estimates of how many songs, videos, etc one could store on their devices. They stopped doing that, I suspect because their 16gb device will look doenright unreasonable as an entry level device.

I'm certain there are people that just want to use these phones as a business machine for email and whatnot. I also suspect there area. Ton of people that choose the entry level model because it's more affordable and they simply "deal with" the 16gb storage, having. To micro manage what they keep and what they trash.

It is what it is. I think Apple will have to abandon the 16gb entry level device eventually, but just notnsurenwhen.

It's amazing to think that the original iPhone launched over eight years ago and 16gb was an option halfway through its lifecycle. Hopefully we don't hit a decade where 16gb is still an option.

No one is "forced" to do anything. 16gb has ALWAYS been the base model.

And 16gb is good enough for plenty of people out there, or else they wouldn't sell them still. A VERY large majority of the iphone sales are still 16gb phones.
I think it would be interesting to examine why these work for people.

In enterprise, I suspect companies are buying base models of the iohone for their fleet because that is simply the cheapest model. Saving $100 time 1000 handsets adds up quickly. They give their workers a handful of apps they need to use and often lock the phone down, sometimes to the point that cameras aren't even usable.

There's another subset that likely just doesn't want to fork over the extra cash. They deal with it because they "have to".

I'm wondering how many people might opt to shave off other features, such as maybe a lesser camera, in favor of more storage space. Build this thing like a computer to desired specs (in an ideal world).

I say all this because I'm confident that there is at least a portion of folks that buy the 16gb iohone because they are set on an iPhone yet that entry model is their only option for the various reasons mentioned (and possibly reasons I haven't mentioned). It works for them because it has to. And there's nothing particularly wrong with Apple realizing this and capitalizing on that. It's just a shame that so many people have to either drop an extra $100 on their phone or simply not buy one at all.

It is crazy. Period. It just causes frustration to the very user Apple sells to. Those who don't know the difference. If you are going to sell a 16 gb model turn off 4K, high res photos and live pictures. Those types of features do no good on a 16 gb device with no expandable storage.

Why have 4K video recording when it's a shaking cell phone in the first place? It's all marketing, hardly anyone has anything worth taking a 4K video of anyhow and if they did they have the money to get a real camera. You can't zoom in with the cell phone (it wouldn't look great) nor can you swap video cards etc. I don't see the reason for it.

I am guessing you have not taken home video in 4K? It looks beautiful and so realistic. For filming my daughter I am very happy I have it available.

At the moment, storage is actually becoming less important for many of us. I have 6GB/month of mobile data, 100GB month of home WiFi data, 20GB of iCloud storage, 1TB of Dropbox storage and Apple Music. The difference between 16GB and 64GB of local space on my iPhone doesn't matter as much as it used to. (That said, I have gone with the 128GB model to be on the safe side).

You'll eat up those data limits quick transferring everything to your online storage if you were constantly swapping off a 16 gb device. Good you went with the 128gb.

Its a pure scheme on Apple's part to get people to fork over $100 extra for what costs them $5 or less in memory.

Take 4K videos no longer than 6 seconds in duration i.e. Vine length.

That's what 6S means. ;)

Can't you understand? They basically "forced " me to buy a 64 Gb model, for 100€ more, where a 32 Gb model could be perfect....

Looking at the UK, EU and AU prices, apple is making good money in this "forced" update . The US $100 is one of the best deals.

As you said , anyone that actually uses thier iPhone for more than calls and texting will be forced to move to 64GB

That's the whole idea. If there were a 32Gb model, the budget-conscious folks would be less inclined to cough out that little bit more money.

That's all part of the marketing game, is it not? I thought the Apple community, more than anyone else, should be the most familiar with such marketing shenanigans. Same as the 'we sold out on launch day, see how popular our product is' tactic (which Microsoft and certain Android phone makers tried to mimick).

If storage is important to you get the 64Gb or 128Gb. This is even more important for an iPhone because there is no microSD card slot.

I think its pathetic. BUT, a solution is either use Google Drive (FREE plan gives you 15gb). Another solution is buy a 15gb hard drive/battery case from Mophie.

Ok so you've bought a 16GB iPhone 6s useable storage is Maybe 12GB out of the Box.
Install your Songs and Playlists lets say 5 Basic Apps everyone uses. I'll be generous and say you have 8GB of storage give or take.

You have a lovely 16MP camera which takes 4K video, 4K TV's are affordable
had Best Buy Pricematch this deal yesterday.

Anyways so you have your new 4K TV, How much video can you take at 4K with 8GB ?

I think its deliberate by Apple theres no way to expand storage or pay alot more to get more storage.
It's a base model. What were expecting from base model? It's for basic phone, email, and few pics and Apple pay. Are you angry that you are getting base model? Shouldn't you get mid model?

True, but the price they are asking for that "basic model" is enough to expect at least a 32 Gb model....

Big Apple lover here, but the 16 Gb base model in 2015 is plain ridiculous
It's a buy or move on situation.

A basic phone does not cost $650, that's what those $200 androids are for
Base model iPhones used to be usable for most people other than insane music and video users, but now they've had 16gb for far too long that now it's considered a basic phone.

They should have bumped it to 32gb when they bumped the rest up.

Sick of hearing about this 16GB thing now. And the worst thing is in 2017-2021 people will be moaning that the base model is only 32GB, then from 2023-2027 64GB etc etc.

Don't want the lowest tier, don't buy the lowest tier. Simple.
