I just bought the 4S yesterday (also my first iPhone) and I have a similar hot spot in the exact same area and of roughly the same dimensions. It's not as pronounced as yours (i.e., mine doesn't appear to show up on video or stills) but I can detect it once in a while.

Oddly, it seems to come and go and may be related to the heating up of the phone or ambient temp.

Either way, like you, I'm not inclined to return it. I've been to that dance before with countless MBPs and iPads and inevitably wished I could have just gone back to the one I first had.

With no battery issues, dead pixels, backlight bleed, chips, scratches, camera noise, etc., I'm happy with this one.

Could you give us the first 3 letters or numbers in your serial number

Anyone think I should try a replacement, my screen has a bit of uneven backlight (not the worst, mainly just one darker spot) but there is nothing else wrong with my phone, any people successfully return and get a phone with a uniform (neutral) screen or completely perfect iPhone.

I agree quality control has gone down this year

I got pretty lucky with my replacement. Replaced a new black 32gb with a dim top portion and a mushy home button via AppleCare and received a replacement with a great home button and an even, relatively neutral screen (compared to my dad's yellowish tinted iPhone 4). It's the luck of the draw at this point, as you can read many similar situations that resulted in crap replacements. Regardless, you should be nothing less than satisfied when making a purchase that charges a premium for the logo.

Yes, but my luck proves that if there isn't one problem, there will be another, I'm sure that there will be at least one problem per phone, I guess I just need to choose the defect that bothers me the least

I replaced my phone today and the new one has the most even illumination I have seen on iPhone so far. Neutral hue, perfect white , no visible LEDs on top and clicky home button... Already happy!
For the record- DNP serial, black 16GB.

You got very lucky with getting a perfect phone, no vibrate buzz or flickering

This is my 12th replacement- I wouldn't say I am lucky...;) This phone was obligated to be already perfect;)
Too bad for this quality control degree...

Went to apple today to get a replacement. The genius I got was awesome, he saw everything I was talking about including the dead pixel. The dead pixel this time was the easy thing to see, I used a drawing program on a white background and drew a red circle around the bad pixel and took a snapshot. This time, none of the genius can't say they cant see it.

I was offered a new replacement, the color was neutral with a clicky home button, current one is mushy, no backlight bleed on top but still dimmed. I was seriously annoyed and declined the swap. I will save the dead pixel for another swap at some other time. My bluish screen is clearly superior to the neutral colored one as I compared the two. The bluish one was significantly crisper with overall more vibrant colors.

I also noticed some dead pixels, but that's no problem for me as long as I can see them on completely black backgraund on full brightness in completely dark room and forcing my eyes at highest possible level= invisible in normal using= no problem at all.

You have more than 1 dead pixel? That seriously blow. My pixel is on the "m" part of the time so can't see it in portrait mode. In landscape, it is mostly invisible unless I bring the brightness up.

Bit more than 1 dead pixel and it needs to go back. But considering you have perfect uniformity, you might just want to keep that.

Frankly , I cannot see them at all in normal and above the normal to almost OCD level of using..
For me this is no problem at all as long as you need a magnifying glass to see them and only on black wallpaper, on white there is nothing.
But with this uniformity...I am in love!;)) look what a beauty:

If you see any inconsistesy- it is caused by my camera.

Wow... I guess there is no such thing as perfect, you said you had dead pixels, this is the only reason I don't want to try my luck at a replacement. How many dead pixels are there?

Nothing is perfect you know:) only He!
If I can see right there are two, but not sure if I see the second one or just imagine. The first one I have to search for it couple of seconds in completely dark room on full brightess and eventually I can see something. For my level of kind of OCD- this is just perfect with this zero dark spots and bleeding and no dimmer top. For my general use- this is the best one I have seen among all I got before, including these at Apple Store.

Ya, seeing that you've gone through 13 iPhones just to get a completely uniform one (and it still has somthing wrong with it) then I guess I should be glad my iPhone has minimal problems (still annoying though)

You have to know you won't find a perfect iPhone, because it doesn't exist. Every single iPhone I had and every single iPhone exposed at the store has own different problems. The question here is- which problems you can deal with and which are invisible during normal daily use.
For me to see darker spots on the screen is the most annoyng problem and I cannot deal with.
The pixels on other hand are 98% invisible and for me, especially on the retina display- so, for me- the smallest "screen" problem. Visible LEDs, backlight bleed, dimmer top or part of the screen, flickering ( interlace lines ), yellow tint- that are the real problems in my opinion.

Ya, the only problem with my phone is the uneven backlight, the color is neutral, no visible LEDs or flickering, it also has no vibrate buzz or anything else like that, think I should keep this one?

It is completely up to you. I haven't seen your uneven backlight to see if it will bother me enough to go for exchange. If you post a pic of your screen, displaying white wallpaper, I can tell you if this would bother me.

here you go, i don't know why it is so yellow at the top and bottom, it is even on the top and bottom. The problem is one lighter and one darker patch in the middle of the screen. Noting that no one is getting one with absolutely no issues, I'm probably just going to keep the one I have now. With my level of OCD, nothing will be perfect in my eyes
