My last 4S had that issue, plus the top area was significantly dimmer than the bottom and it had a yellow 'crust' around the top edge of the screen. Bugged me whenever I was reading something on the screen. The screen on my new 4 is much better.

BTW, does your serial number start with C39? 3/3 of phones with a C39 prefix that I have seen have exhibited this issue to a certain extent. The best 4S screens I have seen seem to be DNP or DNQ prefixed.

I've got that yellow crust on the bottom of my screen: it about 1/4" all the way across. When reading a web page landscape that edge looks dirty.

Although the four iPhone 4S models we have in my family are all crystal clear, they do suffer the Batterygate fault quite badly.

It's this continual year after year of significant quality degradation, especially the last 2 (Antennagate & Batterygate) that is very discouraging. Knowing Apples ability to build fault free phones only ads to the frustration.

Oh sure, there will always be small bugs, which is perfectly understandable. But these big problems that could & should be caught before the phones are shipped.

In the case of Antennagate, the Wall St Journal reported that Steve Jobs was told about the problem by head of Apples iPhone engineering team 8 months before the release date.

Jobs fear of the Android onslaught & desire to release iPhone 4 ahead of last years flurry of Verizon Droids paralyzed his good judgement.

For all his bravado, his fear was very apparent. Fast forward to this year and once again we have the dreaded Batterygate. With a bevy of buyers so desperate to get their hands on an iPhone they skew reality.

Many coming from the dumb phone sector, they wouldn't know a good smartphone if their life depended on it. They just know in order to fit in the clique, they desperately seek the phone with the fruity logo.

If you can notice them when looking at the image straight on then that may indicate a problem. The effect you are describing sounds like "light leakage" and it's what was affecting the iPad 2 displays earlier this year. You should do a search for "LCD light leakage" and see if the images you find match what you're seeing. Typically this issue will be more prominent with darker images.

I can notice it looking straight on in the form of slightly lighter and darker areas all across the 'bar' at the top of the screen where the time/carrier/signal bars are, etc. It doesn't affect the screen any lower than that. And it doesn't seem to show up in a lot of (most actually) apps or watching videos, etc. So it's pretty faint at normal viewing angles and I will forget about this soon enough probably. Does bug me a little initially that I Know now it shouldnt' be like this really but i lucked out in so many ways with this phone already...:) Interesting tho. I believe that it is indeed light leak now...thanks for the reply.

My first 3GS (along with a ridiculous number of other problems) had light coming out of the earpiece grill lololol...:D
Maybe it's supposed to be like that...I'm the defective human who can't hear light...

I have this, but I wouldn't describe it as yellow or crusty... it just looks like there's a slight shadow. Sometimes it's obvious, other times I have to look for it. I thought it was just an optical illusion of some kind... perhaps not though.

Kmart , I exchanged my black 16GB DNP for white 16GB C39, but this C39 seems to be from another batch and much better like contrast and color. Still slighty dimmer on top left corner , but not much. Here are some shots, what do you think?:

These shots are taken at ~35% brightness, only first one is at 50%.

Looks good except for the middle picture, just a quick question, does your home button wiggle or move at all?

Yeah, the middle picture appears like this because if my camera..
My home button is fine, very tight and solid.

I received my replacement via AppleCare about a week ago and it is in much better shape. Screen is even (though I think has a touch of yellow, but good enough) and the home button has a nice click unlike the first one.

What are the first three digits of your phone's serial number?

Just wondering, is it normal to be able to see the leds actoss the top (earpiece end of phone) when you hold the phone kind of horizontal/at an angle, or sometimes just whatever is on the screen makes them noticeable in general...
I can see 6 I think, havent tried too hard to count, but they are all evenly spaced and u see the colours on the screen in that area are slightly brighter beneath where the LEDs show. I really don't think I care enough to be upset over it but wouldn't mind knowing if it's actually supposed to be like this or not.

I have this same problem. I think I am going to exchange mine for this issue. LED should not be seen imo

Every single phone I saw in Apple Store was having visible LEDs on top.
Don't make a big deal of this because you may end up with far worse and more problems.
This is visible only when the phone is tilted and doesn't affect the normal usage. As Steve Jobs would say: just don't tilt the d**** phone;)

looks like a lot of people are having this issue, guess its not worth replacing for such a small issue, anyone else have a bit of a darker or lighter spot?

Black 32GB 4S just picked up on Friday and the display looks pretty stellar.

The battery is running out a bit quicker vs. the wife's 4, but manageable and I reasonably confident we'll see a good amount of improvement in the next couple of ios revisions.

Really happy with it so far compared to my previous android devices.

I do, brighter spot in the middle. See my post #92 or my video on youtube regarding it below:

Still haven't taken it back (fear of getting a yellow screen). But it drives me nuts every time I see it on a white background.

I just bought the 4S yesterday (also my first iPhone) and I have a similar hot spot in the exact same area and of roughly the same dimensions. It's not as pronounced as yours (i.e., mine doesn't appear to show up on video or stills) but I can detect it once in a while.

Oddly, it seems to come and go and may be related to the heating up of the phone or ambient temp.

Either way, like you, I'm not inclined to return it. I've been to that dance before with countless MBPs and iPads and inevitably wished I could have just gone back to the one I first had.

With no battery issues, dead pixels, backlight bleed, chips, scratches, camera noise, etc., I'm happy with this one.
