I have planned my finances this year on the basis that I WILL be upgrading my iPhone 4 to a 5.

However, I am now having second thoughts...

Firstly - I am in the UK, and pretty much locked into Vodafone due to it being the 'corporate choice' - so no point in having LTE, and nothing on the horizon even yet, so we're talking months away, at the earliest.

Secondly, all the 'envy' I have by currently owning the 4, I can actually get with the 4S - i.e. an 8MP camera, Siri and of course turn-by-turn nav.

I personally can't really get too excited by 'thinner and lighter', as I travel all over the place, and having a 4 without some sort of case would probably spell disaster. I'm a business user primarily not a gamer so I don't even get lag on a 4, never mind a 4S, so A6 chip? Meh

And after hearing so many potential negatives with scuffs, rattles and yellow screens I really am thinking I don't want to part with so much money, I might just upgrade to the 4S for now for which there are some cracking deals, wait for the bug-ironed 5S/6 (whatever), and use the money I saved to go towards my laptop upgrade at Xmas and get a better model MacBook...

Apparently tho, that puts me in the category of 'soccer-mom', not a true Apple enthusiast - that opinion has me so worried, I'm gonna be up all night man... :D

I'm a 4s user, picked mine up in February. Feeling envious and really wanting the 5, even though its just a bigger screen and a little faster..definitely a victim if gadget envy

Not jealous at all. I just want it.
My 4S does incredibly well, but the phone is what I use the most EVERY SINGLE DAY of the year, so if it can be better then be it.

Also... I buy all my iPhones unlocked so great resale value. Just adding a fourth of the original price I can get the new model. So I get a new iPhone every year for around €200, ~$20 a month that is.

Envy can be a deadly sin. Do not be envious of your neighbor. Do not covet what they have. Yet, rejoice with them and be glad for their happiness.

I went from a 4S to a 5. I didn't want to buy it at first but I figured that I can sell my 4S for a good enough amount. I also wanted to get off the S cycle. I usually buy a new phone every year but I'm getting tired of doing it.

Well yesterday I ended up returning it. In my state (NJ) we don't have LTE on AT&T except whatever spills over from NYC to Northern New Jersey. Friends of mine were down in Atlantic City with me using their 5's on Verizon and the LTE was so much faster. I felt that LTE should be one of the buying points of buying this phone and the only way to do this was to leave AT&T and go to Verizon. Obviously stores are sold out so I had to go back to using my 4S for the time being until I can transfer over to Verizon.

Problem is that the more I use this 4S, I notice no difference but the screen. The weight and thickness of the 5 are totally irrelevant to me. I'm starting to think I should just wait especially with all the worry of getting a scratched phone. I just really wanted to get back on the regular cycle instead of being on the S cycle.

Why, really? I myself want the opposite but Iam always facing that time where I have to get an upgrade to the regular. Although the 4S lacked some battery , I would rather have that than the regular 4. Now iam getting the regular 5 cause I dont afford the time to wait for the S.

It honestly depends when you get your phone. If you buy a 5 now, its usually pointless to get the 5S unless its some crazy feature and you HAVE to have it. I know the 4S was faster and had a few extra things in it but the big seller for it was Siri. For some that wasn't important and they skipped it. You can easily skip that revision because the design usually never changes. Yes of course it'll be better but is it worth it at the end of the day? Now compare that to an S update. You're constantly behind on a design update. This can be good or bad. It gives them time to fix and tweak any issues they had with the previous model. You can't go wrong either way. Of course you can upgrade every year but you have to consider the fact that you're spending an extra $250 every year to do that (at least with AT&T).

But why are you here? Serious question.
What do you mean? Are you asking why I'm a MR member or why I'm posting to a thread that asked a question for 4S owners? To fill you in, I'm an owner of a 4S so this thread hits my demographic. Not sure what you're asking me though unless you're just being weird.

Gotcha. No, not being weird - I thought you were just trolling the forums with actual common sense.

hahaha! That was an unexpected reply.
Unfortunately you could be right, sometimes common sense looks like trolling.

My 4 still runs smoothly. I like the feeling of not having a contract and having options.

The iPhone 5 cAn do several things that the iPhone 4S can't. Get data at LTE speeds for one. Another big one is playing videos at full screen without black bars.

The video thing is a quite hilarious point, not just by you, but in general.

No one who takes video seriously watches it, seriously, on their phone regardless of the screen size. I have a good friend who is an independent film maker here in Glasgow. His short films have won awards in the US and his movies screened at Cannes.

He loathes video on phones, firmly believing that video/film should be for the big screen and television at most. I have to say I agree with him, because I'd just laugh watching someone glare at a smartphone to watch, lets say, The Avengers.

Smartphones, screen size not an issue, are for the consumption of brief, convenient video in my opinion. The most I watch on any iPhone I've owned is YouTube clips and Sky Sports News on transfer deadline day whilst at work.

A movie? No thanks.

I don't normally watch movies on my smartphone. In fact I can only recall watching one ever and it was a free movie that I got with a blu-ray. I watched while at my gf house while she was sleeping due to sickness.

But yes, I was more thinking of YouTube and other "quick" video being full screen.

And that is a major feature that the 4S can't do.

Meant to add, the demo units in the Glasgow Apple store had Cars 2 as one of the demo clips. But even then it had borders top and bottom in landscape mode due to being, what looked like, in 1:85 ratio. I double tapped and the borders disappeared but lost a little on the left and right as a result.

Anyway, as I said, I don't use my gadgets to willy wave. Not saying you do, but we've all sat beside that person on the train who when seeing you bring out your iPhone, brings out the latest model to unlock their screen, swipe about doing nothing, then put it away. I count myself very lucky to own such great technology, and in work today I noticed one of the boys is still using a banged up old first gen iPhone.

How can I moan about "only" having a 4S when there are people unable to even have that model?

Always be grateful for what you have, not lust after what you don't need.

My wife is envy of me, because I got the 5 and she got 4s. But I am sure I will be in the same boat as her, next year when she get the 5s. It is a rat race.

not really... I have the 4 right now.
I will be able to upgrade in Nov but still undecided on the 5 or the galaxy note (1 or 2);
Eventho 5 is a bit faster; played with my friend's 5; it's not that noticeable of a difference in real life. 4 still works really well;

It's revolutionary to them. In fact, can we drop this whole revolutionary stuff? It's a mobile phone, not the cure for cancer. It is cringe worthy when you're using the word in the context of a piece of electrical equipment used to make/receive phone calls & text messages and browse the web. The bringing down of the Berlin wall was a "bringing about a major or fundamental change" for the better ... that was revolutionary, but we're going off track here.

It doesn't matter if it's "revolutionary" or "evolutionary", the fact remains that regardless of the cycle you are on, when you upgrade after two years you get a phone which has skipped a model and which to your experience is superior to what you're upgrading from.

The S version, like it not, is the more powerful model. I don't need to wake up in the morning and think, "I'm using the revolutionary version of the iPhone while these poor sods on 4S's wait for an evolutionary one". And likewise, when I get my 5S I won't wake up in the morning and think I got one over on the iPhone 5 owners because my phone has more powerful innards. I'm not one of these guys who gets a hard on when using public transport and who smugly brings out the newest model of the iPhone whilst smirking because I notice the bloke sitting next to me checking his model from last year.

I deliberately came off the first cycle to move onto the S cycle with the 4 and 4S. I will not be caught out again in that regard.

The Complete Redesign version, like it or not, is the more powerful "model" than the previous year's "S" phone. I could do this forever. :D

And in regards to your comments about how to perceive the word, that's your opinion. Yes sometimes it can be thought of as a major sweeping change in world culture or human rights, but that's not its only correct meaning or context. Try again.

Im a little jealous but I'm trying to convince myself I don't need one this thread helps

Happy with the 4S

I have a 4S and plan to hold out for the 5S. I did see somebody with a 5 on the subway, and was a bit surprised that it didn't seem that much larger than the 4S (the 5 wasn't in a case; I have mine in a Candyshell). Although the additional screen real estate is nice, what I REALLY want is super-long battery life and hope that the 5S has that. I'm not a heavy user, but I can't get through an entire day on a charge without risking running out of battery life, and have just gotten used to charging the phone in the office. When I'm on travel, that's an issue (and the reason why I carry a battery pack). Compared to the 4, the 4S battery life is a lot worse, and if the 5 isn't significantly better than the 4S, I'll wait. The only other feature that would drive me to the 5 is a better camera. Two f stops improvement is great (if that's what it is), but it needs a better flash. Maybe on the 5, too.

But the biggest reason I'm not switching is that LTE isn't that big an attraction for me. I have a new iPad (Verizon), and the rate it goes through data on LTE is shocking, to the point where I am careful when and why I use LTE. If I had the 5, I'd have to turn off LTE most of the time (and just use AT&T's "4G", which is plenty fast for my 4S). I suspect that after the first bills go out to new 5 owners who have chewed through a ton of data on LTE, there's going to be a push to get better pricing on data plans. At least that's what I hope.
