any hope for inc battery life??? I need more wifi time

Yup I have hope. The iPhone 4 got an increased battery, and I expect so will the touch. As technology improves, pieces get smaller, so it seems the iPod will have more room for battery.

If apple decided to put in an awesome camera, they would have to increase size, which would allow for even more room, upping the likelihood of a battery increase.

So I say to you, there will be a battery increase.

Apple won't release any announcements because if they did it would cannibalize sales of its current products, and they definitely don't want that. Steve doesn't want people to wait for the latest either, since he wants to sell you that iPod NOW! DS sales have gone way down since Nintendo announced the 3DS because everyone knows a new one is coming.

But the smart people know something new is coming, and wait for the better item, that might cost less and have more features than the old one, or that will at least have more features than the old one and stay at the same price.

What this essentially means is technology is obsolete even before buying it, since in a couple weeks new iPods will be announced making the ones on the shelves obsolete already since we know the new ones are coming.

Ya...duh....we know....

When has an OS EVER been not ready?

OS updates have been delayed numerous times across all platforms. Usually it doesn't matter to a hardware release - Apple typically can just release the new hardware with the prior version of the OS. In this case, the functionality of the new hardware (front camera) is tied to the OS 4.1 update, which enables email based Facetime.

Keeping in mind that the hardware specs need to be fixed some weeks in advance of the release date (Sept.), would Apple spec a front camera when the OS is not ready? I speculate that there is a risk of "last minute" feature removal, just like last year with the rear camera. I see it as a problem that iOS 4.1 isn't released yet and will feel a lot better about the front camera if it's released in August. September might be too late.

I totally agree but if there is a redesign and the hardware is similar to the new iPhone. I feel it will be a less problems with the camera as the features are already implemented in iOS 4 on the iPhone 4.

It seems pretty straightforward but some people here keep asking when the iPods will be announced, which means they don't quite understand the principle.

Didn't they officially mention the next event will be taking place on September 8th and it's quite clear [based on their pattern] that this will be an iPod event and hopefully the iPad iOS4 release as well.

I dont recall anyone OFFICIALLY mentioning anything like that.. do you have a source or something?

The event has not yet been officially announced to my knowledge at least, I don't think that happened last year until like a week before the event actually happened. But given the pattern, we all assume the release will happen near the beginning of Sept.

Wherever or whenever the event is, the location and reservation of said location should have been booked by Apple. I believe they use the same place every year. The Yerba Buena Center for the Performing Arts has been used in the past and will likely be used this year. Would they give out the necessary information?

I'd hate to be negative here, and being an iPod Touch fan myself, I honestly don't think the iPod Touch will EVER get any thing more than it has hardware wise than it does now. Sure the Nano got a camera, but then again the Nano doesn't have a touch display, a browser, mail app... etc... etc..

While all the things you guys suggest I would really love to have or see in an iPod Touch, the ONLY things you guys are leaving out is an internal mic built in for calls and a little speaker at the top. Then why not throw a 3G reciever into the Touch?

At the end of the day, the Touch and Phone will look too similar and the iPhone sales'l probably drop.

If I ever go and replace or upgrade my iPod Touch I will probably just go iPhone. Why not put my phone into my iPod too instead of carrying around both. OR just buy one off a friend/internet..etc and have all the iPhone features (besides native text and calling or 3g) all for free (cameras, vibrate etc..)

Again I'd love to see at least a Camera in the new Touch (though I may not afford a new one) but vibrating too, it would just be too much like the iPhone.

But hell, Apple has done crazy things before, lets see what happens when iPod Touch 4th Gen is announced. I hope to see a 128 but I don't think flash has come down much in price for those devices so it might not be possible. Maybe 72 GB or 96 GB? A 128 would also start getting close to rivaling the classic 160 GB. iPod with 160 GB HDD or Multitasking device with 128 GB SSD? Hmm..

Because the iPhone is several times more expensive. Even if you decide to buy one off-contract, it's 600+. You can no longer do the buy-iPhone-pay-for-one-month-service-and-pay-ETF route since the cost of doing that now exceeds 700 dollars since the ETF has doubled.

When you buy one with a contract, the 200 dollar price for the iPhone is seriously a drop in the bucket. The real cost comes from the monthly fees. I believe it's 90+ dollars a month? 90 * 24 months = 2160... that's the real cost of an iPhone

600 bucks? Not one single person who I've known spent that much money on an iPhone they bought off of someone face to face or online non apple. Where are you getting 600 bucks? Thats insane and fictitious.

That's how much it is to get one unlocked. Of course, it isn't sold in the U.S. because there's only one carrier that sells the iPhone, and Apple has a deal with AT&T. Multiple countries have the unlocked version, and sell them at that price. It's as real as it's gonna get.

If you get one for cheaper for 600, let me know. I know a couple of people who are interested in buying 3 or 5. It doesn't matter if it's still locked to AT&T now that a software unlock is available.

1) Not everyone carries their touch around with them everywhere they go because of size and not needing it 24/7.

2) There's that mandatory data plan at $25/month for 24 months which equals an additional $600 that touch owners don't have to pay.

Well definately facetime, and probably a naff 2 meg camera on the back. Retina displays very likely, but to me 128gb seems a bit ambitious.

I think they have to release the ipod touch with 80gb(64+16) or 96(64+32)...

Line up #1 - 16GB, 64GB and 80GB or 96GB. This line up is unfair... For 100 more you will get 4 times the capacity.
Line up #2 - 32gb, 64GB and 80GB or 96GB...But 32gb for 200 buck right now don´t think so...
Line up #3 - 24gb(8+16), 48gb(32+16, 80gb(64+16) this is a fair capacity bump i would like this line up.
Line up #4 - 24GB, 48gb and 96gb. This one would be nice to.

For me Line up 3 and 4 are good, but at least Apple need to release a 16GB Touch and bump the capacity of the 64gb
