Retina display
front facing camera (maybe also back facing, but if both, only vga, no pictures)
gyro
a4
n-wlan

No other new features will be coming due to the pricing. No ram increase, no led flash, no picture taking camera, no design change, no memory increase, no 3g, no battery life, etc. pp.

A price increase would lead to cannibalization through iphone and ipad and because the production cost are usually around 50% of the retail price. My estimated calculation is around 150$. There might be a chance of more ram, if there is a back facing cam as well, because this is the reason for higher ram in the ip4 compared to the ipad.

So there are two options for apple, either it has a slight bump in memory size for the entry level ipod and uses the current 3g model for the 199$. Or it will still have the 8gb memory but the same features as the higher priced models, for an slightly increased price.

Considering that the current entry level iPod is a 2g with the same memory size i think its very unlikely that the new entry level iPod is going to have those features, it would be a huge leap and manufacturing costs would be around 120$ leading to an retail price of at least 230$ or a change in apples price policy ha. On the other hand the differences between the entry level iPod and the pricier ones would obviously be recognizable. Currently its "only" a faster processor and more ram.

Wow who can say pessimistic. I almost shot myself. You are wrong. Don't be talking about that features would be too costly to put in, unless you've researched it (me) or are quoting someone who researched it.

There WILL be improvements. Seriously? You say no RAM increase ?!?! They have always bumped up the innards. Don't be silly, 512mb of RAM. if they add a camera, it will take pictures. It can fit, you are WAYYYYYYYY too pessimistic.... Ugh, I feel bad for whoever has to argue with you because you keep thinking stupid things... NO LOGIC

So why on earth would we want two VGA cameras? Two video only cameras would not be worth it, since the back should take stills as well. The A4 and ram go together, so both are expected. Gyro isn't really a huge deal as it only adds minor functionality. Retina is nice but most people won't see that as a deal maker/breaker.

I agree that flash and 3G are unlikely, but to give poor upgrades two years in a row to their flagship MP3 player would not go over well. Many didn't see a speed increase as a huge reason to buy a third gen. The addition of a picture/video camera (regardless of HD quality), appears to be the biggest thing in this forum (along side a memory increase).

Well I'm just being realistic, apple wants your money and not your personal happiness, but you'll see in a couple of weeks. It's based on this http://www.isuppli.com/Teardowns-Manufacturing-and-Pricing/News/Pages/iPhone-4-Carries-Bill-of-Materials-of-187-51-According-to-iSuppli.aspx do the math yourself ;-)
I don't think the prices changed significantly. 512mb ram seriously is not needed for iOS so 256 would not so bad. I would be amazed if it could take pictures, obviously the purpose of the cam is strengthening the FaceTime format. I'm not thinking stupid I'm seeing the situation as an entrepreneur not as a consumer dreaming of its perfect gadget.

its not going to be the iphone without the phone that i can guarantee at VERY best we will get:
-retina
-front facing cam
-a4
-512mb ram
-3gs back facing cam
-gyro
-maybe redesign though i doubt it
-mic

As far as Facetime, the front camera would presume that iOS4.1 is released at the same time or before the Sept. release date of the iPod touch. Facetime on the touch won't work without iOS4.1, and I can't see Apple shipping a non-functional front camera.

What if iOS4.1 is not ready? Would Apple then have to go without the front camera on the new iPod touch??

Another question is whether Facetime on iOS4.1 has provision for operating without a rear camera. That could give us a clue whether there will be a rear camera or not. We still have to hope there are no issues with the iOS4.1 release.

I agree that while it will have the A4 chip, the memory will be 256megs like the iPad. Since there is no phone function the Touch just doesn't need the extra memory. Apple will cut costs where they can and that is a logical move.
I do expect the gyroscope though as that would have a use in the game apps.
Front facing camera seems a good bet from the leaks on the screen parts but back side camera is an unknown. I don't see any real reason for Apple to throw that in. It will have wireless N too since the parts are the same as for the iPhone. I don't want the limits of the iPod family though so I won't buy. I want an iPad mini device over a spec upgraded Touch. A larger screen, GPS and 3G need to be there for me. The sooner we get the iPod show over with along with the whining and move on the closer we get to the iPad mini.

I just wish Apple wouldnt be such a dick about everything and give us some information.. the whole secrecy is annoying -_- either way they are releasing it.. why not just let us know what we are getting or AT LEAST when we are getting it

It's not just Apple and this is the way things have always been done :/

Didn't we tell everyone a million times?

September 7, 8, or 9th. Around these dates.

And the "secrecy" not only gives them a competitive advantage, but also acts as free advertisement, because it creates more hype and eagerness than other companies manage to get.

I think that apple has to keep its elitism about the iPhone so they are not going to give you all the stuff that you want with the cameras and whatnot.

When has an OS EVER been not ready?

Why do you need extra memory for the phone functions? Look at the original iPhone/iPhone 3G. They have 128 MBs of RAM and perform perfectly. Apple never keeps the same hardware for more than 2 years, i.e. iPhone 2G/3G/iPod touch 1G/2G: 128MBs of RAM; iPhone 3GS/iPod touch 3G: 256MBs. I see no reason whatsoever why the next gen Touch won't get 512MBs like the iPhone 4.

If there's a front camera, there WILL be a rear camera. You cannot do FaceTime without a rear camera or else the 3GS would have had it enabled with iOS 4.0

That would make my day. :D

I think many will be disappointed. --fanboys-- I'm looking at you.

The people with 1G and 2G products likely will not be disappointed.

Here's what I really want: the 4G iPod touch to be fully compatible with the USB iPod connections found on modern car stereos. In short, the same compatibility level as the iPod nano 4G and iPod classic "6.5G" with the single platter hard drives.

I know it will never, ever happen. But I so, so, so wish that they'd make a 3G-enabled Touch with a no-contract data service, a la iPad.

Again, I realize it won't happen. But I want it so badly. :-(

thank god apple doesn't hire you for its advertising; you'll run the company straight to the ground. if you weren't aware, apple is still in its back to school promo and needs to get rid of its remaining ipod touch supplies. therefore, any sort of announcement will only occur after the back to school promo is over.

I could care less if the 4G iTouch has a camera. It will suck anyway just like the camera on the iPhone. My LG phone takes a decent picture that isn't fuzzy. There are a FEW aps that would make the camera useful such as the various bar code aps. But a camera should do it's job and the iPhone camera never has.

The only added feature for the iTouch that would cause me to upgrade would be an FM reciever. Afterall, this is primarily a music device. I was happy to see the new iPods with this feature and the added bonus of tagging songs you hear on the radio so you can purchase them later. It's only logical that this feature would appear on the new iTouch.

Not anymore ;) It's more like a miniature computer.

I listen to music mostly on my MBP, and sometimes on my iPod. But very rarely.

Thats hilarious. Listening to music more on the computer than the device (originally) designed for playing only music. But yes, the touch is a game device/computer and incorporates a larger number of features. That is what is happening to most electronic devices.
