I agree, I think the 4.7" will be the biggest selling iPhone yet.
I'd say between the 4.7" and the 5.5" Apple will get more than a few former iPhone users who went Android, and it'll sell big to current users of iPhones as well, many of which (I think) are anxiously awaiting a bigger screen.
Wonder if they'll keep a 4" model around for the not insignificant number of users who like the small phone?
Cover all screen sizes...

Maybe the 5C or 5S will remain to cover the smaller screen.

I would like to see a traditionally sized model retained for those of us who maintain active lifestyles. Why do we have to buy protective shells ... surely that suggests the need for a more robust design. Real innovation could be in the form of a clamshell design where the vulnerable screen is completely encased.

You make it sound like there are 23 iPhones sitting on the shelf that you must choose from. But there aren't.

You'll see 3 iPhones on the shelf... then the salesman asks you what color you want and what capacity you want. And he retrieves it from the back of the store.

BTW... Apple sold almost 100 million iPhones over the last 6 months. Clearly it's not as difficult as you think it is.

I never said it was difficult. I just said the thought process is there. When I bought my iPad I certainly asked what colour they think would be better for me. Just a 2nd opinion, but that's so important to have. For a purchase of that magnitude, getting the right colour is critically important.

This is about trends. And what the future will or won't bring. And since this website (MacRumors) is all about predicting the future related to anything Apple . . . I think you get my point.

Few people have thumbs long enough to hold and operate a phone that big one-handed. For some tasks, you'll need two hands.

On the other hand, many tasks will still be operable mono mano.

And perhaps developers will help by putting most commonly used controls within thumb's reach (with a configuration for RHD vs LHD).

Huawei have a great solution for this with their latest Emotion UI; One hand UI. It squeezes keyboards, keypads, dialers etc to the preferred side to make them easier to use with one hand.

Ditto. I think 5.5 is going to fail the "fits in my pocket comfortably" test. I'm not even sure the 4.7 will pass that one, honestly.
The 4.7-5.5" Android smartphones outsell the 4" iPhones worldwide. The 5.5" Samsung Note 3 is the second best selling Android smartphone and #1 is the 5" Samsung S5. If Apple has 4K in the 5.5" iPhone 6 I will get it.

I really don't understand the desire for these gigantic phones... I wouldn't choose the 5.5in model if it was the same price much less pay a $100 premium for one.

They are not really phones anymore. They are internet devices that have phone calls as a minor feature.

After having several large screen Androids recently and still currently but using my 5s as my daily i will be getting the 4.7 in. Just like its size better for actual phone use. Will just use my iPad mini retina for my gaming needs. That said will probably get a 5.5 too LOL if and when it drops

As a Note 3 user, Apple has to offer an incentive that the 5.5" device has over the 4.7" one. Does it have a stylus or some extra software features? If so, I would have to decide then and there.

I know. I posted it to show how ridiculous people look with tablets held up to their heads. If the 5.5" iPhone/Pad sells, believe me, there will be a 7" version that follows...

Ridiculous... Who gets to decide that? I certainly don't think that it looks ridiculous by any means.

Also, why should I care if some narrow minded douche thinks that I look ridiculous?

I almost never use it as a phone but this doesn't change the fact that the 3.5 inch iPhone is perfect. If bigger was "simply better" why aren't we all carrying 17" or 19" laptops around?

Because Apple doesn't make any.

If smaller was better, why aren't we all using 3.5" displays on our desktops?

You must not have small hands or want to put the tab into your pocket or want to easily hold the tab and answer the call at the same time etc etc. Also holding up a 7" phablet to your face with a phone call just looks silly.

No, I don't have small hands, and no, I don't think that it looks silly, and no, I don't give a teensy-weensy rats hiney about your opinion on that matter, either. I have enough self esteem to simply not care about what someone thinks of my cell phone.

But yes, I do like to be able to pocket it, hence no 7" tab or iPad mini for me, but a 5.5" phone would be sweeeet, giving me both easy "pocketability" and a decent sized screen for general usage.

Yes stock is going through the roof because people are buying Apple products in droves, and they buy because that's what they want.

Most people I know bough an iPhone *despite of* its screen size, not because of it. I'm one of them. The iPhone 5 is already too big to fit shirt pockets, and since bigger is obviously better in every other regard, what's the point with a teeny screen?

----------

It's an extra $100, not an extra 100 pounds. We left Great Britain about 300 years ago now.

No, it's an extra 100 €, and we never were in GB to begin with.

Is the price they charge for the phone really even relevant? Over the past 4 iPhones I've had, none of them have actually "cost" me anything in the long run. In fact, I've actually made money off the iPhone.

I always unlock and/or jailbreak my old device and sell it when I get the new one. I'm always able to sell my old device for the same price as the new device. In some cases I was actually able to sell it for more and made money...

Unless you actually believe that Apple or the reseller you buy from are actually losing money when selling you a phone, that just can't be true. I guess you aren't including the monthly costs in your calculations?

Apple knows a rube when they see one, and that's their customer base.

Not only will they accept such a price rise, they'll line up overnight to be the first lemming in line!

you mean altogether? or a specific one?

You know what would be really cool? If they made the 4.7 inch $99, and the 5 inch $199. Imagine, a flagship phone being that price at launch! That would be like Apple's response to the Moto G.
