I tested the new HTC One (5.0") for a week and (despite hating it) it was a pretty good size if not a little too big. I think 4.7" is going to be about perfect for me. I can't see many average users really needing or wanting a bigger one unless it runs the iPad version of apps or something.

An extra $100 just for the privilege of a larger screen? Is Apple having a laugh?

I paid £629 for my 32GB 5S and that was a stretch. I couldn't justify paying £729 for a 32GB 5.5" model for a bit of extra material.

I hope this rumour stays a rumour and doesn't materialise.

why? what did you expect? to sell it for the same price as the 4.7 inch? it is apple after all and even samsung does it with their note line. itll be the "premium" device. seems pretty obvious to me

My take on this.

5C 8Gb free
5SC (or simply 5S) 16GB $99 (option for 32GB)
6 16GB $199 (with $100 increments to 64GB)
6XL 16GB $299 (with $100 increments to 128GB)

I don't get this fascination with with more storage by default.
With services like Spotify, Netflix, iTunes Radio etc. gaining popularity we actually need less local storage than we did a couple of years ago.

And for the minority who do need more (myself included) they already offer the 64GB version. And I'm fine with this.

The issue isn't that everyone needs 64 GB. It's that for the people who do need more than 16GB, the premium to go to 32 or more is ridiculous. Keep selling the 16GB if you want, but they should lower all memory points by $100. Flash memory is WAY too cheap to make us pay so much.

For Americans who are already enormous to begin with, and have huge hands, obviously a bigger phone is better. But Apple needs to adapt to other markets, like the European one

Actually, most Europeans have normal sized hands.

It's Circus Fork - Carnies - nomads, you know. Small hands. Smell like cabbage.

This. In fact, 32GB should have been the standard for iPhones for a while now.

Agreed. Hope at least 5.5" version will come with 32G standard, since becoming necessary and I don't want to cough up $400 for wife's phone, though personally I will go with 4.7" 32G regardless.

Apple does this with the iPad. You pay more for a larger screen. I don't get why this is surprising.

Few people have thumbs long enough to hold and operate a phone that big one-handed. For some tasks, you'll need two hands.

On the other hand, many tasks will still be operable mono mano.

And perhaps developers will help by putting most commonly used controls within thumb's reach (with a configuration for RHD vs LHD).

Hell... I cannot comfortably reach some buttons in the top corners of the iPhone 5S screen now.

But that's not really a problem... many apps use gestures to handle certain things. For example:

In the Facebook app... if you click on a picture... you don't have to click the Close button in the top corner of the screen to exit. You just swipe down from anywhere on the screen and you return to the timeline.

And you swipe sideways to exit a post.

I can probably do 90% of stuff without reaching the top of the screen. For the remaining 10%... I will have regained control of my other hand :)

You'll always be able to do normal things like typing with one hand regardless of screen size. As long as people can text and browse Instagram with one hand... they'll be fine :D

Just put a phone chip in the iPad Mini and be done with it....! I am probably going for the 4.7, the pocket factor is an issue.

Why? Most people don't need that much storage, it's a waste. The better situation would be to reduce the cost to upgrade from the base. I shouldn't have to spend a hundred dollars to go from 16 to 32 gigs.

thats the thing though ... the cost of flash isnt even worth mentioning anymore. apple could easily sell the 32GB one for the price of the 16GB one so even if "you" dont need that much space. why not take it if it costs the same.

still cant believe apple had the balls to introduce a 8GB iPhone 5C in freakin 2014. especially since most 3rf party stores sell the 16 GB iPhone 5C for less than apple asks for the "new" 8GB one. insane

I wouldn't. I dont like apple that much...stay with the note

If you don't like apple why do you waste your time on these forums?

Don't get me wrong. I would love to have more storage without it costing me more but I don't think apple NEEDS to increase the base storage based off of the average persons usage. Now if they increase the megapixels in the camera that could change.

And you're right about the 8GB model. That's just ridiculous for a "premium" product as apple considers their phones. Since it's not a budget phone it shouldn't have budget phone levels of storage.

It will cost $100 extra but probably comes with 32GB memory.

Unfortunately, we're still about 7 to 10 years away from iPhones having 32GB of memory. While we might see a 32GB SSD standard on the iPhone 6, it's likely to only have 2 GB of RAM (2 if we're lucky, 1 if not).

Adding my vote for 128gb as the new storage maximum. A good collection of ALAC music makes quick work of 64gb.

Err, the iPhone's NAND can correctly be called "memory" (just not RAM). Strictly speaking it's not an SSD, however.

I waste my time on these forums to see what's up in the tech world. I'm also a member of xda, android forums, and a whole bunch of other ones. I just like to keep informed, like the concerned citizen I am.

Ultimately it comes down to what you use the phone for, but I for one have no idea which size I will ultimately choose. $100 bucks does not seem like a lot for a larger 5.5 incher if it suits my needs.

What needs could you possibly have for a cross between an iphone and an Ipad mini?
