Absolutely. There's definitely a market for it. My question/contention is that, by and large, is the market there because of people wanting these devices for some functional reason or is the demand there because people want to be different? Here's a few examples that will really explain what I'm talking about:

I slept with a girl about a month ago. She was really into me but I wasn't all that into her. The next morning we were up and talking and I asked her if she wanted to go get some food. She said "sure." I named a place and she said, "no, I don't like cheeseburgers." I thought to myself, "well that's wierd, who doesn't like cheeseburgers?" Then I asked, "What about this place?" She said, "no, I don't like Pizza." Then I said, "do you not get enough attention?" She was either confused or embarrassed; I don't know which one.

My first girlfriend in high school sneezed a lot when I drove her home for the first time. She said it was because she sneezed when she got nervous. Come to find out she liked me and was trying to avoid any awkward silence.

The last girl I dated told me she didn't like french fries on our first date. Two months later I catch her eating fries and she says, "I can only eat them with a lot of ketchup." Imagine how unsurprised I was a few months later when I saw her eating a fry without ketchup.

I've got a roommate that calls onions, "hanyins." He calls sweat tea, "Shweat Tea." He does it because it's "his thing" even though we both know it takes a special effort on his part.

The point is that the people in all these examples were lying to sound interesting. My thought process is that the same reason the girl I slept with last month "doesn't like burgers" is the same reason that guys have 5.5inch phones.

Not sure what's so hard to understand.
I'm sure people with phones larger than an iPhone don't get it because they think "Yes, now I'm so different because I have a bigger phone!"... yet millions of other people also have bigger phones.

They just get it because they think it's better to have a bigger phone. Pretty simple if you think about it. And the benefits of having a bigger phone is not some mystery wrapped in dark matter.

And yes, the disadvantages of having a big phone are pretty clear as well.

So, it boils down to how an individual weighs one's priorities. Would you sacrifice some mobility for the benefit of a larger screen? If that tipping point is 4.7" you get a 4.7" phone. If it is 5.5" you get a 5.5" phone. If you can't bear the disadvantages then you get a smaller phone.

I'll say this again, people use their smartphones much more (and differently) than when the iPhone came out in 2007 sans an app store. Apps have greatly advanced, games are getting better with more detail. More streaming services are readily available, more people use the phone to take pictures and view them, more people browse the web with their smartphone they always have within reach, etc.

Time changes, and how people use their smartphone change. No longer is making a phone call and receiving emails the main function of a smartphone to an increasing number of people.

Why can't people understand that some people actually "want" bigger phones for its inherent benefits?

Unfortunately, we're still about 7 to 10 years away from iPhones having 32GB of memory. While we might see a 32GB SSD standard on the iPhone 6, it's likely to only have 2 GB of RAM (2 if we're lucky, 1 if not).

I meant 32gb flash memory not RAM.

The question I have is - what kind of apps will a 5.5" iPhone use? Will it use iPhone apps? That might be an awful lot of underused real estate. Will it use iPad apps? They would be kinda scrunched. Or, will they use some sort of hybrid? That means a 3rd app size to develop for, but probably the correct way to go.

That is a valid question. Unfortunately I do not have the answer.

Well I supposed they would not quite use iPad type scrunched versions. It would probably be typical phone apps built for the 5.5 screen. This is not exciting at all, I know. Perhaps Apple will allow developers to utilize the extra screen space without emphasizing on a specific type of device in the iTunes Menu. It will appear to be an iPhone app, but adapt to the bigger screen by adding x and y. Who knows.

you're paying the Apple premium

It would be cheaper to have my credit card stolen! :(

You're write though.

Look, you can say all day long that it's easier for you to drive down the road and change songs with a 5.5in phone than it is to do with a 4in. phone.

Well, unless you are claiming that hitting a smaller target is easier than hitting a larger target, then yes: it is easier to change songs on a larger screened device.

The 5.5" better have 32GB internal memory and a significantly larger battery that can outlast any phone on the market (possible if the battery is large enough since iOS is just more efficient than Android [p.s. I use android atm]).
Why is it important to have the best battery going?.. if its 2nd best on the market is that a deal breaker?..

How are you so sure? I had a buddy wait forever to get a white iPhone. He was so happy, went as far as calling it better than the black versions. Think that's stupid? Yeah, me too, but it proves my point. He did it specifically because everyone had black iphones and he wanted to be different.

So give me a few examples of yourself, or someone specifically where it makes sense for them to use a 5.5in phone?

If you can't see the obvious problem with this then it's useless. Drive down the road with one hand and try to use an iPad to change songs with. Come back and tell me that it is objectively harder to change music on the larger device.

Smaller screen would be easier for me. All the buttons are closer together. However, it depends on what mount you have. I liked one that went off to the left and I could literally keep my hands on the steering wheel while just reaching my index finger to touch the phone.

A larger screened phone is better for basically everything except for the actual phone thingy. Although, if you include video calls, then a larger screen wins there as well.

If you are driving down the road without a proper holder for your phone/tablet then you are a complete fkucwit who should not be allowed anywhere near a car in the first place.

you guys all shattered my fantasy of the iPhone starting at 32GB,

and being 32/64/128GB.

If it is still starting at 16GB... will there be a 128GB option for $500?

Indeed, you are 100% as had been said time and time again here, Apple fan's do not want a phone that big. Enough people have said it so many times.

Funnily enough, repeating something that's incorrect doesn't make it true.

Now had you said *some* Apple fans ..... You'd have been correct, but if you mean *all* Apple fans, then you are provably wrong. The post above you by Gary03 says it perfectly, People want bigger phones for their inherent benefits. If you are aged over about 50 one if those benefits is just being able to read the damn thing! I have several friends in this bracket who bought non apple became they wanted a bigger phone. Some of those would switch to a bigger apple phone in a heartbeat.

If you don't want a big phone, well for goodness sake don't get one it's not obligatory but what on earth do you think gives you and similar the right to demand there shouldn't be one for those who do want one?

The fact there are so many large massively selling phones shows there is a demand for them, at the moment Apple isn't satisfying that segment of the market, as the internal Apple slides leaked as part of the recent court case show. All the surveys and every indication shows that a large iPhone will be massively successful. Why would that be if "apple fans don't want a large phone" ?

People want to pay $100 more for a phablet they think Apple will be making. Their loss if they believe this. I'll personally hope Apple makes an iPhone 6 (and not an iPhablet 6). And if so I'll probably buy the iPhone 6.

Do you consider 4.7" a phablet or just the rumored 5.5"?

I agree with you, I want an iPhone, not an "iPhablet".

It's actually easy to understand.

If you have a need or desire for combining a large screen and a phone in one device that still fits in most pockets, then a phablet is perfect.

There are also lots of people who don't want to (or can't) buy both a phone and tablet. Again, phablet to the rescue.

It's a good all around soluttion for those who really need the extra display room in a pocketable format, at least until we get foldable tablet phones in the next few years.

Yeah like the El Camino or Subaru Brat. For when you need a car and a truck at the same time! Huge market. No compromise.

No. Too many SKUs is a bad thing. It's best to limit them to good product lines. Phablets are jack of all trades and masters of none. I think Apple should just add phone calling capabilities to the next iPad Mini. That's Apple's large phablet. And then keep the iPhone phone sized.

Phablets are fantastic for people in professional careers, I suppose for students their size could be a hindrance.

I have been waiting for an iPhone with more space, I don't even care about the screen size, and if they raise the price to $299 for a 16gb iPhone 6, I'll just get me a 32gb HTC One for $99...

...and some of the rumors had been about lowering the price of the iPhone and also the space to 8gb, that's so 5 years ago.. but I don't even care anymore, I want more space, without having to pay an eye for it.
