Of course it's more powerful, it needs to power the extra pixels on the larger screen. Both models should perform similarly.

Even without extra pixels, it still may be different. The iPad Air has a more powerful processor than the iPad Mini with Retina even though they share the same resolution.

Samsung is also releasing an premium version of the S5 that has QHD, 805 SoC and maybe a full metal back! After the Note 4.

One it's a rumor and two seems to be a reaction to the negative reaction to the S5 (perhaps sales weren't as good as Samsung had hoped). Or desperation on their part to try and steal some of Apple's thunder.

You guys must be bored? What's the news here? Bigger phone get bigger faster things? BOOM!!!! Really? Going back to sleep!!

The price break for the 5.5 is reasonable if you are only selling to life long iPhone users that will never leave the apple eco system.

If you want to attract and/or keep users that have screen size as the their major selling point, then that pricing break with kill the new user sales for iPhone6 5.5 since the larger Samsungs phone would be $100 less.

If Apple is realeasing the 5.5 iPhone 6 then they would be better served to price the phones as before with discounted phones being th 5s/5c models.

Apple doesn't try to match Samsung or any android pricing. I guarantee the 5.5" will NOT be $199. If all that matters to a person is specs then they will not chose Apple.

Hope not! I want to buy a phone based on screen size, and not be forced to use a bigger screen to get better performance.

If they are able to fit a more powerful processor in a larger body, then what's wrong with that? They have done this with their laptops and desktops.

Weigh the tradeoffs yourself and buy the phone you want. Why does everyone want to limit other people's choices just because they want to stick with a smaller screen?

Folks calm down.. I don't think the 5.5" version will be more powerful. It will have a slightly better CPU/GPU to compensate for the higher resolution that it needs to supply!
Otherwise the 5.5" will effectively be slower then the 4.7" if it would be the exact same CPU/GPU... More pixels needs more power!
We have seen similar moves with the iphone vs ipad cpu/gpu...

you can't compare apple to samsung. Samsung is like a greedy little kid who sees shiny things, buys the lot, stuffs them in a box and sells them. Apple takes its time to understand problems and uses, they then go about solving those and then they share it with the world.

Nor samsung to apple since they are the best components manufacturer :)

That's not the conventional/understood definition of a heatsink. In that sense, every enclosure of any processor is a heatsink in that they're not perfect insulators and some heat gradient will exist.

If there is a fan or vented airflow, then a heat sink can be separate from the enclosure, as airflow over the heat sink out of the enclosure will remove heat separate from the exterior surface of the enclosure.

If there is no fan or vented or circulatory airflow, then all internally generated heat must be dissipated though the surface of the device, making it the effective heat sink surface. How to get enough heat conductance from the die thru the package out to the chassis external surfaces or other airflow surfaces is a very common product design problem. A bigger device with more external surface area makes this easier, thus allowing a higher performance processor die.

We're talking a 0.8 inch difference in diagonal dimension! 13" MBP to 15" MBP meant that an additional fan could be put in to cool down a dedicated GPU.

If Apple does this with the 5.5", it's not because the 4.7" couldn't handle it.

And why should it have bigger resolution? The ipad air and mini have the same resolution, it's easier for developers..

The ratio between 15.4 and 13.3 is about the same as the ratio between 5.5" and 4.7".

That being said the iPhones don't have fans.

I doubt this. Why would Apple make two types of 'iPhone' under the same brand.

What, like they do now you mean?

Or is every iPhone Apple make an iPhone 5s ?

----------

There is no 5.5" model...

There is no 4.7" model either.

Apple told the world last year that 4" was the perfect size.
And they would never lie just to sell something would they?

Well the low end models usually lose options to reduce skus. But none the less, Apple runs 3 right now (4S,5C,5S) and its clear they are planning to add one (5.5") So they already made some decision.

The rumors are clear they plan to add some

My question is how many are they going to keep???

(And how hard are they going to make it on developers with multiple screen sizes?)

Gary

Just hope they aren't artificially limiting the 4.7 to differentiate the two other than screen size. I have no interest in a phone that big, but want the highest specs I can get.

Sorry, I thought Apple users were never interested in "specs"

It's all about the User Experience isn't it ?

I think this totally makes sense and seems likely.

It is not unprecedented for the "big" version to get a special processor, like the A5X.

Tim: $899 is where we're coming in at. Real smooth. Like an airplane.

Phil: It's our best price ever.

"more powerful" just to trick people into thinkin it's gona be faster than iPhone 5s when in fact it's about the same speed. it's like 5 vs 5s. all the a6, 64 bit and it still lag when opening a simple apps like FB.

Damn it, this means I'll have to settle with a lower end model. :-(
No amount of CPU power can make me buy a 5,5" phone.

Rest assured that if this is true the more powerful CPU/GPU is to support the bigger screen and it should not be a distinction of higher end /lower end model and so, it won't make a difference for the normal user.
