New iPod Pro

The 5.6" one has to be the new form factor "iPod Pro" available in Q4 2010 in 32GB and 64GB models with iOS 4.1

Sarcasm aside, I understand the sentiment. Reality is there's just a clash between wanting something small enough to fit in a pocket and, at the same time, big enough to handle page-sized content. Intermediary device sizes don't solve the problem since they don't do either well enough (too big for pockets, too small for larger uses).

The iP4 is just too small dot anything more than a rambling email

I still think the A5 paperback size would be big enough it as its landscape keyboard would still be the same size as the current iPad in portrait mode.

The deal breaker for me is the ability to carry it in a pocket.

And to the bloke complaining about early adopters being punished - have you seen the trade in values? base models are worth up to £300.

I got £200 for a discontinued 2-year-old iphone 3g that cost £440.
It will be very much in demand so you will get a wedge back

I know, right? If there's one thing I hate more than poverty and disease, it's choice.

No his point is that a 5 inch iPad would cannibalize the iPod Touch which giving developers the terrible job of designing apps meant to work on the iPod Touch, iPhone, and now 3 different screen sizes of the iPad.

And who said Apple was ever about choice anyway...

I thought that at first, and you don't immediately gel to the keyboard, but after about a month I was typing at a comfortable 40 words per minute in landscape.

The portrait keyboard is fine for a couple of sentences but that's it. Apple could really do with putting a number row and Swype on that portrait keyboard.

And allowing the keyboard to be re-sizable by the user. That would be nice.

But it's not bad. You do get used to it, but for serious long typing projects, an external is better.

It can't be user-resizable. It's to do with how apps interact with the keyboard. Making the keyboard resizable would make every app that uses the keyboard break.

Oh, thanks, didn't realize that. Good to know, now I can stop thinking about it!!

Why are so many people being negative about it? My iPod touch 3G is probably one of the best acquisitions I've ever made. For me it's a portable multi-language dictionary, a great calendar, address book, music player, notepad, an email reader, chatting device, and fairly adequate browser (where wifi is available), all in a pretty light weight format, reliable, and with a pretty decent battery life. Throw in a slightly larger screen and a data plan and it will be the ultimate pocket device. For all of you who think that Apple stopped making computers and is now making iToys, remember that iToys are computers. The iPhone will be dead long before Apple's workstation (Mac Pro or whatever name they decide to give it). 4G will accomplish that by making minute plans and phone numbers utterly irrelevant (FaceTime anyone?). All you'll have will be a iPod/iPad with a data plan. Multiple form factors in this scenario make quite a lot of sense.

I'll second that. I took to the virtual keyboard pretty fast, forgiving the typos from finger drift (thanks to the auto-correct being so forgiving in return). The limiting factor on typing isn't so much the keyboard as the cramped space most websites give you to type in.

For serious hardcore typing I'd rather have a physical keyboard, but absent that the virtual one is more manageable than some suspect.

Your mileage may vary; it's really up to user preference (but don't knock it until you've given it a fair chance).
Yes, my mileage varies, because the limiting factor definitely is the cramped keyboard. It's not much smaller, but it is smaller than a real keyboard, and that little bit is enough that my fat fingers will not physically fit over the home keys. If you have small hands or long skinny fingers, maybe you can learn to type on it. But for me it's not ever going to happen. I do the thumb typing thing; I do have Apple's BT keyboard for real typing.

Oh, and back on topic, multiple size iPads seems very unlikely. Apple likes to keep a minimal product line, it's easier on them. And as long as they're selling faster than they can make them they have no reason to diversify. Doubling the resolution next year would be nice though, but I can't see that happening either until Apple gets some real competition in this niche.

Fragmentation is when you let other companies design products for iOS. Android has many different manufacturers. iOS has one.

If they are bringing out mini ipads it will be taking full advantage of the 960 x 640 resolution. Though I think it's jumping the gun because the iPad was only released months ago. Give it time.

iPad mini

a 5.6" screen (in 3:4 ratio) could have the same resolution as the iPad if it was set at about 228dpi. This would make software versions easier with developers needing to make sure the interface doesn't get too small to use.

I pray these minor changes, to the 9.7" model dont mean more ram and faster processor or better display.

i think apple is going to allow printing with the iPad at the iOS 4 update in fall for the 9.7" model. Steve believes that you can do alot of content creation on this device. I agree with his assessment, I have already typed a 14page paper in pages for iWORK
Definitely FaceTime support aka a front camera. More RAM is unlikely, or the feed back they are getting about applications with memory issues must be a lot higher than first anticipated.

Why so serious? There are multiple sizes of laptop screens, afterall.
One major difference though is that Mac OS X and its resizeable windows operate at any resolution (within reason), whereas iOS apps are fixed-width/screen with very little flexibility for changing size. In fact, while developers can make the UI flex to fit the screen width, this can often lead to undesirable results (i.e. plenty of blank space or overlapping of widgets/text, etc).

It's therefore more complicated than simply 3 different sizes of laptop screen.

More RAM is likely if they get cameras. It is my full belief that the reason the iPhone has extra RAM is because of the cameras.

I would expect these to all then have the same 1024 x 768 resolution, which would not fragment the app universe.

My source at Apple told me a while ago that they are really serious about the iPad and were exploring varying size options. I don't know if these exact specs are true though.

LOL. They can't even make enough OLED for small screen devices. Whoever spreading these rumors are pretty clueless on the supply and demand of the technology world.

Not to mention of the OLED problems.

Major NEGATIVE from me.

We have the iPhone and the iPod Touch

For the larger screen (at home/evening use) we have the iPad

Why waste time & R&D on a smaller iPad.

SERIOUSLY I would love an iPas with a slightly larger display for more relaxed magazine viewing and web browsing.

Not a smaller one.

How stupid and a crazy way to fragment your devices even more.

We already have 6 different versions.

And Apple aren't really serious about the iPhone? By your logic, the iPhone would have more variety than just a 3.5inch screen in black or white.

More sizes? Sure—someday. Larger and smaller alike.

Two very similar sizes, this soon, with OLED when IPS-E is better anyway? I think not. I can certainly see them testing various sizes for eventual use, though.

If I can’t pocket it, I’ll stick with the full 9.7” screen anyway. And developers will be happier with just 2 UI sizes (for now): iPod and iPad.
