iP4 is great, but just too small to do much work on, iPad is too big to to be portable without a bag.

Waiting till there is an ipad that fits in a suit pocket.

The perfect form factor for portable reading is the paperback

Steve believes that you can do alot of content creation on this device. I agree with his assessment, I have already typed a 14page paper in pages for iWORK

I assume you used an external keyboard, or have you mastered the on screen keyboard? It's one of the key reasons that I haven't jumped on the iPad bandwagon yet. I've tried it in stores and just had a hard time envisioning getting good enough to do any real typing. Would love to hear how that's going for people now that they've had time to get used to it.

While I do think we will get an updated Ipad before Christmas, this seems a little insane.

Maybe this is the smoke screen to cover up the new 5" Iphone. That would be nice. :D

timing is all wrong. A fall update after releasing in spring? Apple doesn't roll that way.

I suspect the rumors and leaks the analysts have are correct but these are not to be released in the fall, they are for prototypes. Apple is checking out OLED display and different sizes to see if they would make sense in the market place.

Personally, I don't see a smaller iPad making a whole lot of sense - esp one that is just 2 inches smaller. Initially, I was concerned with the size of the current iPad but found it to be decent for typing and viewing - just right I would say. You get smaller and it is tough to differentiate between buying a Touch and an iPhone.

A 5.6-Inch iPad? How cute.

Same here. I did a lot of focus group work on Tablet computers and one of the biggest comments was the size of the screen. The two sizes mentioned here fits the size of commonly printed books right now. That could be driving the affinity for those sizes.

I'd love to see something like an "iPad Mini" running apps and could be easily thrown in a purse or satchel as one is on the go. Put a nice, third party super rugged case on it and you are good to go.

Price wise, if they hit below $200 for the 5.6" iPad, they have a big winner on their hands.

Not from the OS, though, right? Isn't that an app of some kind?

yeah its an app. actually several apps i have can print. i guess iOS4 then doesnt officially print but i dont see that bothering me as it has not prevented me from printing anything from my iPad.

Ouch!

.
Man, this totally SUCKS for early adopters of the iPad. I knew the next generation would be out before the holidays (or shortly after) and have a TON of improvements and features.
-more RAM
-Better screen
-Faster
-Cameras
-Print output

So glad I didn't buy the generation 1 iPad prototype! :)

I'm not sure about the timeframe mentioned, but smaller higher resolution iPads certainly seem plausible at some point. Personally, I'd like to see a 15 inch version as well. :)

Wouldn't a 15" iPad be really heavy? I have no idea how big the current one is, but it's gonna weight quite a bit surely?

Sounds like tosh to me. Several reasons why:

1) Apple wouldn't use OLED screens. They are always slagging them off.

2) Apple wouldn't release a 5.6 inch iPad. That would be like copying Dell.

3) If Apple were to come out with 5.6 and 7 inch versions of iPad what apps would they run? The 5.6 inch version could run the iPhone resolution, but that would reduce pixel density and therefore offer no advantage over the iPhone/iPod touch. The 7 inch would need its own class of app as it would be too small to use with the current iPad UI.

4) "People don't read any more". OK, so Steve may have backtracked since he said that, but with iBooks now available on iPhone/iPod touch, what advantage does a slightly bigger screen give? Surely, Apple wouldn't make a device whose primary function was book reading?

5) They're still launching iPad version 1 around the world and can't make enough of them. The 9.7 inch version won't be altered this year, even if it is supplemented by new smaller cousins, and even if the smaller versions incorporate upgrades (anyone remember back in 2003 when the 15" TiBook sat next to the 12" and 17" AlBooks for 9 months before getting an update?). There's no commercial reason for them to do so.

These rumors are so not true.

First Apple will not make two - six more SKUS, especially if they are different resolution.

Second, give me a high DPI, IPS display (ie 'Retina') ANYDAY over an OLED.

Fragmentation

Gee Wiz, how about making the current iPad better (improved res, RAM, processing, thinner, heaven forbid an SD slot).
Naaa, who am i kidding. Of course people would want current tech with a smaller screen;) Why doesnt Apple just let HP manufacture a mini iPad that has different colors?

they just released a sweet new Mini which is a desktop computer?

My mistake... By desktop computers I meant the pro-line Macs. Mac Pro is all I want. Been waiting for at least 10 months now. Really starting to get to me. If I knew it would have taken this long, I would have bought the current model when Snow Leopard came out.

Agree! The desktop computer is not going away anytime soon. If anything just being able to sit down, relax and have most of your attention on a large screen is going to keep that together not to mention going on almost now two generations of users weaned on this form factor.

PARC the Media Lab and others have been messing with proximity driven computing for a long while where your smart-phone does a wireless connection to a screen and keyboard combo when you sit at a desk, connects with your car when you drive and even connects with public spots when you are in an urban setting.

There have been attempts to make this work in the past but not with too much success. No "proximity computing killer app" has come about yet that doesn't freak out the masses. Also, there is a lot of vested interest not so keen on that concept.

Perhaps this is part of Apple's strategic plans of the year.

This is more like it :)

5.6 model, if rumours are true of course, might force me to change my signature... Only might though...

There is a chance that I might have similar size Android device by then that makes calls and supports Flash as well...

We will see - but good news nevertheless...
