I have to say that I don't get all the excitement over USB 3.0. I have two computers with 3.0 ports and five external HDs that run 3.0 .They are only moderately faster than 2.0.

yep. So let's celebrate!

"We know the truth"

I was about to link to Micheal Jackson song They Don't Care About Us, because of the lyrics, but then I watched Prison Video once again and...we worry too much, it's just another computer...and there is such cruelty in the World...

Don't forget about normal life!

I love that song!

But yes saying this is a sad day is silly. Its a computer not 9/11

In theory, they're like 10x faster though, right? 480Mb/s vs. 5Gb/s. In practice, they might not be noticeable like you say, though.

Here's to celebrate the iPhone 5, lets hope the iMac doesn't go down the same route.

At least they would be able to see an iMac on the pedestal.

They should be 'up to' 10 times faster. I just got a Seagate GoFlex Desk with USB3 and hope to make good use of USB3, mind you Thunderbolt is about twice as fast as USB3 so I would love one of those drives.

skierbri10 - good on you, I could probably buy one today and be happy with it, apart from the lack of USB3. But if I did get one now I'd be more likely to sell it sooner and upgrade not to the 2012 but maybe the 2013 or 2014 model depending on the changes and what I need at the time.

So much anger I feel with this one, the path to the darkside easy this makes.

So he answers your questions and twice you pretty much come back with a post to incite more anger. Why did you even ask?

Using that silly logic, you don't really NEED anything besides food and water.

The current iMac is out of date technology sold at a premium, high-end price. Simple as that. It's a terrible buy at it's current price. If they drop the price down to $899, then we can talk about needs and wants all you like. Until then, it is simply overpriced and out of date.

Exactly. An $899 price point would be very fair.

Seriously people that say dropping $2000 or more on a computer makes more financial sense than buying a$500 external Thunderbolt or $300 for a hub that gives you USB 3 capabilities crack me up.

People are scared to open an iMac up to put in an SSD, replace the CPU or the video card but not scared to do it on a regular PC:confused:
Oh ok, now here's where that warranty speech comes into play.

I have opened my older Macs many times. But really? Yes, AppleCare is cheap and covers everything. Why would a good amount of people that paid for it not be worried about voiding it? It is a great service.

Also, the main reason of buying an AIO iMac is so you DON'T have to do much customization. Or else why not buy a Mac Pro?

Your logic is flawed.

Depends on your drives and other factors, obviously. I get smaller write speeds with certain drives, and others are blazingly fast.

If you're doing a lot of transferring, especially for work, even moderate bumps in speed make a difference at the end of the day.

How about plugging USB 3.0 peripheral into USB 2.0 port? Or the other way around?

Can we expect even a minuscule improvement over USB 2.0 protocol? Or it's just stuck under the old same speed? I don't know it might sound silly but I just feel that USB 2.0 peripherals can perform a bit better given the load under USB 3.0.
So am I thinking it wrong?

USB2 will not run any faster with a USB3 peripheral or vise-versa. Also if you have a USB hub it needs to be USB3 to make the most of it, ditto for the leads.

I only open up my PC when I need to fix something, I wouldn't say I'm scared but I hate it and I have a diploma in IT. I've done some work on my G5, adding new RAM 2 years ago, replacing HDDs and DVD but that's about it. I'd never consider cracking open an iMac especially in the first 3 years under Apple care. When I order my new iMac I'm going to add a bigger HDD and other spec depending on what Apple gives us. The only addition I'll make is some non Apple RAM later, but again this will depend on what Apple does for the 2012.

Oh I agree with you that a standard tower computer is easier but it is all in your comfort level. Once you do it then it doesn't seem that difficult.

If you have a clean area to work on and have an inexpensive static wrist strap (which I use even building regular PC's, we also always wore when in the Air Force when tearing down our avionics equipment) then it just comes down to some screws and cable connectors.

My dad thinks the same about my new Super Duty pickup compared to his older one, "How can you even work on this thing? Everything is packed in such a small space";)

Lol, I know, people won't get iMacs because their not 'upgradable' but once you get inside it isn't that scary.
