What is the consensus on the value of upgrading from the stock 120 board in a 2009 model?

My most intensive use is Aperture 3.

Thanks,
Mark

Here's a comparison (scroll down): http://macperformanceguide.com/Reviews-MacProWestmere-Cinebench.html

How do you guys find the noise level? My stock 5870 card's fan makes a 'high' noise (not high pitch, more like a blow-in-an-empty bottle sound), not sure if this is normal? My old GT120 card in comparison is quiet, but crap in terms of performance.

Got mine installed last night - not any additional noise over my 120.

No formal testing done, but adjustments and brush oveeprlays in Aperture are virtually instantaneous now - it was painful before.

No, it's not normal, or at least mine doesn't do that. I can only hear the fan if the card is stressed, in which case it's a typical soft whirring sound.

Noise is very subjective, so without hearing a recording of the aforementioned sound, it is very hard to compare.

The 5770 card that I installed in my Mac Pro was not noisy. But it caused an acceleration of the fan of the PCI-e expansion bay up to 2100 RPM, that was noisy and I I have sent the card back to Apple.
With my original (slow) Geforce GT 120, the MacPro is silent.
I wonder whether an installation of a 5870 would cause the same trouble...

Sounds like the card about your video card has cooling issues. Check for dust and such?
