Intel Mobile Processors to be Refreshed in April? Nehalem Soon After

Recently leaked roadmaps from VR-Zone indicate that Intel will be updating their mobile processors in Q2 2009. Digitimes pinpoints the updates for April.

The company will launch two processors along with the new platform, the Core 2 Duo T9900 and P8800.

These new processors will top out at 3.06GHz and likely be suitable for use in Apple's notebook line. The current MacBook Pro tops out at 2.8GHz.

However, shortly after their release, Intel will be migrating from the Montevina platform to Calpella in Q3 2009. This shift marks the move to the Nehalem (Core i7) based architecture which we've previously described. Nehalem is said to represent a major jump in performance due to many underlying changes in technology.

Intel's naming structure is annoying to me.
Typical PC style of naming ***** after useless things no one cares about.

Why not call them things people can get excited over like, SUPER ULTRA EXTREME COOL NANO 3?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?! Which by the way beats the pants off of MEGA SWEET MICRO REDUX 2.5.

I am curious about the handtop version of one of these chips that is 2+ cores, very low frequency, low mask size, low voltage, which will drive the increased display size iPhone like device but running Snow Leopard 10.6.

Client server meets laptop capabilities meets handtop form factor. External display capability and wireless to all disc, print, and network services.

To be a little more precise, Clarksfield are the nehalem-based mobile quad-core cpus. Those maybe be available in Q3. The mainstream and dual-core with integrated GPU may only be available late Q4 or early Q1 (depending on optimistic/pessimistic rumors). Since the TDP of Clarksfield is planned to be about 45-55W, I don't even think that the first batch will be seen in any Apple notebook, maybe on the iMac (Fall update).

But in the meantime, Apple notebooks and desktops could receive a nice speedbump next spring with at least some quad-core offerings. It is still rumored that the 2.00GHz Q9000 quad-core could be a 35W part, making it possible for an Apple notebook and obviously some iMacs (especially with a low price of $348, about the price of a current dual-core 2.53GHz cpu).

Plenty of possibilities. Intel is starting to put out more mobile cpus while they were usually just half a dozen in the regular C2D range. Good for Apple. Given that snow leopard will probably be "ready" in the summer, offering more quad-core computers and OpenCL compatible GPUs makes sense.
