Existing SIM, around 3 years old, just swapped over from my iPhone X (but plan upgraded to a new one to include 5G).

AT&T network is pathetic. LTE on Verizon is 6x - 10x faster.

I just ran a 5g speed test on my iPhone 12 Pro Max using T-Mobile

This seems woefully slow for a claim of 5g

Am I missing something?

Unfortunately I think what you’re missing is the fact that right now 5G is primarily marketing hype. Just like LTE and 3G the speed that you get is going to be dependent on a wide number of factors and just seeing 5G appearing on your phone doesn’t mean that you’re magically going to get crazy fast speeds.

It depends on how close you are to the 5G cell towers unfortunately. Here’s today’s results at work (the fastest one while the other results were tested at home over the weekend, SF):

If you’re not in a UW city, you’ll get speeds closer to LTE than 2GBPS. In fact, I don’t even think T-Mobile has Ultra Wideband. People’s expectations were set a little too high.

mmWave it is not. My iPhone doesn't even have the mmWave antenna since it's an European model.

Just did these tests this morning in DC area, Northern VA. iPhone 12 Pro, Verizon.
First three were outside, bottom row was inside my house.
LTE nearly twice as fast in every case, except inside.

You might want to compare your results using LTE only vs your "5G" results. I did a few tests today, and LTE was usually about 2x as fast. I'm on Verizon and no Ultra Wideband/mmWave.

I've been averaging about 15 to 20% faster on 5G than LTE with T-Mobile. So much depends on traffic congestion at the time each are measured though. I've seen that if I do a speed test in the middle of the night when congestion is at its lowest, 5G does a much better job, approaching upwards of 300mbps on T-Mobile. Best I ever seem to get on LTE is a bit under 200mbps. When T-Mobile deploys its mid band 5G there will be a pretty big improvement.
