Carrier 5G Speeds: post them here

My t mobile signal was usually good LTE and got 40 mbps before Sprint merge. Unfortunately, I think they moved sprint customers to T mobile network and the speed went downhill and got 10 mbps LTE. It's pushing me to upgrade to iPhone 12 mini and now I get 180 mbps.
 
Honestly LTE is very fast for me (Verizon) and 5G seemed way slower. I didn't upgrade to the "UWB" and literally just turned 5G off. No issues with LTE and not needing anything faster.

I also have Sprint/now T-Mobile and I thought they weren't moving or merging networks for a while yet - if you were on Sprint, you'd still be on the Sprint network for some time.

5G about 20 miles south of Portland Oregon. I think I had 3 bars.

I think the speed to the towers in my area is the limiting factor. LTE and 5G almost always show similar speeds.
 
Speeds will get better in time as carriers install more infastricture
At this point in time there isn’t much use for these high speeds but it is coming
 
So I didn’t even know I had Verizon UW anywhere near me, but was sitting in a parking lot and realized I was getting it in downtown Florida.

Expanding in my area but the upload speeds leave a bit to be desired...

AT&T
LTE 40-80 mbps wayyyy better coverage and speed than Verizon from my experience!
5G 80-120 mbps, pretty reasonable, surprisingly decent coverage too.
Not tried 5G UWB yet.

Real 5G is a couple years away.
You need a lot more towers to achieve the result everybody wants
5G heats up your iPhone and shortens battery life as we see it today
MmWave 5G doesn’t even pass through a glass window so well
I have a tower across the street from the office and with the window closed 5G is like 4G
 
For what it's worth, I picked up my 12 mini for the new form factor and other features and 5G was just a "this may be nice to have" feature. That being said, I'm anxiously waiting for 14.5 to be released to have 5G and dual SIM running.

Anyway, for my observations in the Indianapolis metro area since November, I'm rather pleased with the early stages. I've tested the three carriers by way of moving a number between Verizon and AT&T and running T-Mobile on another SIM.

  • T-Mobile n71 seems to be speeds comparable to their decent LTE (50-70Mbps), while n41 is hitting 300-400Mbps regularly. The big issue issue is the yet-to-be-upgraded sites that still just have a bit of overly-congested LTE. It's rather jarring to go from 300Mbps to a 2Mbps signal where the "wait" spinner kicks in for simple requests.
  • Verizon "Nationwide 5G" is very comparable to their LTE speeds, but seems to handle congestion better (prepaid line, so always-deprioritized by Verizon, no mmWave access). It made areas where I was lucky to get 1Mbps on LTE more like 20Mbps. I never saw anything faster than about 80Mbps though. I'm guessing a lot of this has to do with their early DSS implementation. I have mmWave sites popping up all around me, but we already know how that performs.
  • AT&T is the king for LTE speeds in this area (I regularly hit 200Mbps+ in some spots on LTE on my iPhone 8 Plus a few years ago), and while they can't carrier-aggregate as many LTE bands with 5G, I'm seeing anywhere between 20Mbps and 250Mbps on 5G, depending on the location. I have yet to find a "5G+" (mmWave) site, although it seems there are some in the city somewhere.
It's funny because when we went from 2G->3G or 3G->LTE, a lot of the general public didn't really know or care, but now that everyone has a smartphone of some sort and is aware of data usage, there's more "pressure" on 5G to be good right out the gate. In my little bit of testing in my corner of the world, the results seem to demonstrate that the first implementation can have some initial benefits, but isn't exactly what the marketing departments have been pushing.

I know it will sooner or later slow down as more people get 5g but even 1/10 that would be great!
