I read through the thread because I was hoping to learn something new since I was coming from a M1 Pro MacBook Pro that's limited to HDMI 2.0, but I feel like most of your questions can be answered on the front page of the Mac Mini product page. Curious if people actually read the tech specs.

The tech specs say the M4 supports up to 8K at 60 Hz. So it would make sense for some to think that 3840 hiDPI should work. It just so happens 3840 is exactly half the horizontal resolution of 8K.

Not supported at all.
What about with a custom resolution?

Oh I agree with you, but I'm just addressing the other posts about the more simpler questions (does it support 4K and 5K at higher refresh rates?)

My Mac mini arrives today and I'm going to tinker with the settings using Better Display for HiDPI. I can tell you that I have it active on my M1 Pro MacBook Pro.

I just received the base M4 Mac Mini and connected it to my LG 5K2K monitor, but it doesn’t support 4K HiDPI. My M1 Pro does scale correctly and supports 3840x1620 HiDPI, but the M4 Mac Mini doesn’t. I tried both Thunderbolt and HDMI connections, but no luck. I’ll be returning it.

You might want to try a different HDMI cable. I had the same issue with mine today and tried a different cable. I was able to get 120hz refresh rate plugged into my 42-inch LG C2 4k OLED.

What about resolution? Is it HiDPI? I used usb-c thunderbolt which supports display port 1.4 and works perfectly fine with MacBook Pro M1. But let me order an HDMI cable and try with that. Thanks for the suggestion.

Please make sure you order an HDMI 2.1 cable

Yes, I did but I can see the HiDPI only up to 3072x1296. I also tried a 4k monitor with USB-C Thunderbolt, and the result was the same.

I did, hopefully, will receive it on Sunday

I was also hoping that the problem (3840x1620 HiDPI) would be solved after 3 generations since my M1. Unfortunately, what waydabber (betterdummy/betterdisplay programmer) said remains valid:

‘for entry level M1 and M2 systems the horizontal framebuffer resolution is limited to 6K (which is 3K HiDPI). For M1 Pro/Max/Ultra it is 8K (4K HiDPI). If you want a HiDPI resolution higher than these, you need to use the dummy mirroring method'.

From Apple's site: (post #52)

M4 Pro
...

a display with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at 240Hz over Thunderbolt or HDMI

(In the base version, only 6K is mentioned)

btw my other mac M1Pro can do 3840x1620 out of the box

No, for the base M4, it says
  • Up to three displays: Two displays with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one display with up to 5K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt or 4K resolution at 60Hz over HDMI
  • Up to two displays: One display with up to 5K resolution at 60Hz over Thunderbolt and one display with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at 240Hz over Thunderbolt or HDMI
Also:

HDMI display video output
  • Support for one display with up to 8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K resolution at 240Hz (M4 and M4 Pro)

I am just kind of curious how 3072x1296 HiDPi stack up against 3840x1620 HiDPi ?

In your screenshot I don't see 3072x1296 as an option

I've never shared a screenshot, it must have been someone else but let me share. With the below settings, I was able to get 3072x1296 otherwise the max is 3008x1270 with HiDPI

@EvilEvil Could you share what cable you're using?
I've tried 3 different HDMI 2.1 cables and a USB-C to HDMI cable. 4k HiDPI not working with any of them.
Also tried BetterDisplay and SwitchResX but no tweaks seem to help.

Not mine, but someone else on my local Mac forum showing his LG 40WP95C to a base M4 mini. I can ask him further details like what cable is used (it even seems the connection is through a soundbar?)

Anyway, not looking good. You need M4 Pro to start using "exotic" width HiDPI.

My monitor doesn't support 120hz. I don't care about the refresh rate, crispiness is more important.
I just got the Mac mini M4 base model , I guess I'll upgrade to the Mac mini M4 Pro , whenever I buy the 5K2K display

Here's the cable. I'm not sure what brand it is. Ironically, I had it plugged into my M1 Mac Mini, which doesn't support 120hz without that cable matters dongle, which I never bought. I guess make sure it's an 8k HDMI cable and set your HDMI port to "PC".

I have it connected to a 42-inch LG C2 4k OLED TV via HDMI 2.1 ports. I'm not sure if it's HiDPI. Make sure it's an 8k cable. I'm not sure what brand this one is. I ironically had it plugged into my M1 Mac Mini, which I never got 120 hz to work since I was too lazy to buy that Cable Matters dongle.
