Even a broken clock is right twice a day. I doubt Digitimes has any hard facts... I doubt they could recognize one with a magnifying glass, but obviously if the next iPad is going to have an early fall world-wide release similar to the 4 then production would need to ramp up in August.

...which doesn't make a lot of sense given that the last truly new iPad was introduced one year ago. But, again, if all they'll do is make it thinner and lighter and give it a slate back than I really don't bother waiting 1/2 years. It's all the same

What more could they/should they do on the hardware side? Trimming down the fat while evolutionarily increasing the speed is about all that's left.

The major changes for the iPad will be on the software side with iOS 7 and on.

The iPhone still has some form factor changing to do (larger iPhone and cheaper iPhone, both likely on the way either late this year or next year).

But the iPad is a mature product....its already faster than it needs to be, has a display that's better than it needs to be, now it just needs to be more portable (but still retain that near 10" screen).

I think most normal people only upgrade their devices every 1 to 2 years. If you go on that time scale, this next iPad5 will be a nice upgrade indeed.

Lighter, thinner, faster, more energy efficient. What more do ya want? :D

I guess I'm not Apple's target audience. I'm still finding my iPad 2 works beautifully and does everything I need on a daily basis.

Not if your a MR member.
Then its upgrade at every incremental release.
:apple: Approves. :D

Thinner and lighter? Now THAT'S innovation!

But seriously, the thinner bezel is a good move. I always thought that the iPad was badly proportioned (visually) with its thick bezels. It used to be necessary when the iPad was too heavy, as it gave a firm place to grab on. But with a lighter design, the ugly bezel can be thinned out to an aesthetically pleasing proportion.

Ummm

Am I the only one wondering how you would hold a full size ipad with thinner bezels? My thumb takes up the whole bezel as it is right now. And don't you dare tell me I'm holding it wrong.

You're not missing anything either.
We have 2 iPad4's and the retina display is a gimic and requires you have the iPad 6 inches or less from your face to really tell.
Also, the iPad4 crashes just as frequently as our iPad1's just having multiple tabs open in Safari or opening one webpage that has a lot of content.

Just glad people were willing to pay $350 for an iPad1 during the Christmas season to subsidize our upgrade. :)

"iPad 5, it's thicker, fatter, chunkier, slower and uses more power. But doesn't it look just simply beautiful".

Thats all we see or rather hear from Apple these days.
It's not about tech advancement but all about how it looks.
Yay, give us an outdated product and convince us we need to buy it because it looks "beautiful" feels "beautiful" and we'll all "want to get our hands on it".

I guess Apple have forgotten all about iNnovation. Or do they just need an App for that.

You are satisfied with your iPad, why wouldn't you be Apple's target audience?

Edit: better yet, if you are satisfied so much with a current product that you do not consider buying something new you are nobody's target audience.

Expect the iPad mini to be always one generation behind in terms of CPU compared to the big iPad. The retina iPad mini will likely sport an A5X cpu (an A5 couldn't drive the retina display).

Why? The Mini sells like hot cakes, they shouldn't arbitrarily gimp it. As soon as it gets a retina display it should also get the same SOC the bigger iPad uses. Anything else would be a baffling and artificial crippling of a promising form factor.

Agreed!

Same here, although I'd upgrade to the 4th or 5th Gen (whichever is coming out soon) just to get a better rear and front facing camera, Retina and a thinner bezel and design.

I am there with you. It's really a shame that the iPad mini looks and feels worlds better than the full-sized iPad.

I guess if there is a redesign with the bezel, I can throw my $80 leather smart cover in the garbage. I can't see them making it fit, unless they stretch the actual screen size.

Your smart cover is as useless as your old ipad. That is to say, it isn't useless. It's just going to join your older ipad as you sell it or pass it on to a family member.

I have a website. If I post "I am an analyst and I think that Apple will release X Y Z" do I get my own MR article?

If you were to get tens of millions of people paying attention to your opinions, likely MR would too.

Until then, quite unlikely.

Yeah, I get what you mean. However on the software side, this generation they introduced "thumb rejection technology" this timed with the release of the slim bezeled mini. Basically the OS (and progs designed/updated to take advantage) can tell the difference between a touch gesture and a holding one. This may sound a bit hit or miss, but I don't hear mini owners complaining. That said, I still get what you mean...thinner bezel seems to be a gain/lose proposition. Portrait thumb typing would improve, but apps where you want to survey the whole screen without seeing your thumbs, not so much. The drop in weight could aid that though, maybe opening up more realistic holding positions.

If it is light, you need less leverage, and you thumb does not need to extend across the front plane quite so far. My guess is that Apple takes this factor into account, which is why they used the ugly thick bezel on all the obsolete versions.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Apple products are magical.

Soooo.... Can we bump that 128gb to 256?? :p:D
I'll probably end up selling my 4 to get this but keep the 2 as my work horse / JB tester..

So who thinks a major toss up by Apple.

iPhone 5S with support from iOS 6.2 in June.
iPad 5 with iOS 7 in September.

I prefer "Apple products are well designed and well engineered (for the most part) products, that are outstanding at their function and exceed expectations."
Magical is reserved, and I certainly don't want to blow it on a piece of glass and metal with circuitry.
But to each his own... :D

Got an iPad mini now. Find the screen too small for what I do. In between jobs. Looking forward - and planning to - get one of these when they come out. Hopefully I'll have a well-paying job by then.

I hope you do too. Good luck on your job search. :)
