For WhatsApp:
Ensure on-board storage is NOT used for media ... let THEIR servers host media shared.

Cloud Services:
iCloud best for backup and only use Applications that benefit from backing up to icloud IF and only IF they dont' offer their own services for free.

Mega!
50 GB Free data storage in the cloud ... ALL the TIME, no dumb 1/2yr trial business like Box/DropBox ... no need to refer to get more storage either.

Drop Box

Box.net

etc. all of these allow you to export Photos (pics/videos) to the Cloud for easy retrieval. Once they've synced then you can purge local storage. Also check Settings for compression of personal media

Apps/Games:
So many people have tons still on their iOS devices that they really don't even use/launch anymore for over months and have just forgotten about it. Don't be a pack-rat ... DELETE unused/unwanted items.

iCloud is backing up my Whatsapp. I have 2tb iCloud

My 6s is 64gb and after two years still got 32gb left. I have no music locally on my phone and only 3gb of photos. Most spaces are taken up by apps.

You completely missed my point.

I did say services which you would NOT pay for backing up in the cloud, copy such data here.

Also, for the same data that you access it’s usually in 3 main locations: on device(s), in the cloud, or on a computer (really 2 devices since a Oc/Mac is a device).

Next consider just how many times you access over 40% of your personal data? If it’s very high or we add those in your family or friends over multiple devices, the benefits to using “offline” deminishes significantly for each recall, reuse, sharif or editing. Most importantly when editing many times you’d like to have the original but manually you’ll always need to make a backup.

Consider iClouds’ Documents in the cloud or Memos ability to lock notes, as well as OSX/iOS hand-off and similar services many of which you probably already use yet take for granted. This isn’t the same like uploading music to a cloud service or streaming a channel of music ... where he original content is overwritten without notification or replaced or several tracks that just don’t match your taste in a particular artist collaboration or genre etc. What I’m explaining is STILL your original data.

Either way to get your data, backup your data “offline” as you say you’re limited to
A) wired connections to your 90’s type digital hub,
B) risking corruption and deletion (internal storage crushed by dropped phone run over by a car/van/truck cause well you don’t have that nights event pictures and videos uploaded to a cloud. Heaven forbid a loved family member had passed and you recorded such memorable moments and such a mishap above mentioned occurs on the way home.
C) you’re already paying for Data on service provider and more than likely using free hotspots from Starbucks, PizzaPizza, Tim Hortons, McDonald’s, sports bar, Library etc .... so why not take advantage of previous post mentioned free o line cloud services to manage the limited on device “offline” storage you have? Hmmm ;)

In saying I completely missed your point, I believe you missed mine entirely.

I was referring to the cost of a monthly data plan. Not the cost of the storage provider itself.

In particular I'm thinking of videos. I watch a lot on my phone while I'm out. Take Netflix, for example. I'd rather download media for offline use, rather than stream it. Same for personal or other local video content. Same for music.

It's less expensive for me to get a larger capacity phone and use my media offline, rather than pay the additional monthly data charge to the cellular provider to get sufficient service.

For wifi backups, or documents with smaller files sizes, sure. Cloud services are great for me.

So what is taking all this extra space? I thought this whole issue with "other" went away with the new file system.

I've had runaway "Other" data too. It is fixable. Backup your phone, do a full factory reset, then restore from your backup. A lot of space is freed up.

...The only thing I didn’t do is capture videos at 4K (I do t have any 4K TVs). I don’t put movies in since I have an iPad for that.

You don’t have to playback in 4K to take advantage of capturing in 4K. You could crop out wasted space with iMovie on your Mac and then export it as 1080. You could also use it to pan and create some other effects. It also makes pulling stills out better.

I know with more storage and keeping all your data on iCloud, this helps but in my case I currently have a 7 plus 128 I have 75gb used of which 20gb is whatsapp even though it saves in icloud, pics set to optimizes storage, 16gb icloud drive 24gb backup. So what is taking all this extra space? I thought this whole issue with "other" went away with the new file system.

The setting up as new is horrible because you lose all your text messages but not sure, how can someone use 64gb and have a huge icloud setup? Is this possible?

i would keep syncing my iphone with itunes connected to external drive.

I have a 64GB iPhone and plenty of space free, I guess it all in what you use the phone for. As for me, I'm seemingly pushing the envelope.

In all my years of using iPhones (since the original) I've never used more than about 40 GB of storage. However, I always get the most storage possible on the off-chance I might finally go crazy and try to fill the phone up. :D

I have about 10.000 pictures on my iCloud library and switched on the "optimise space" option on the iPhone.
I never carry more than 1GB of music on my phone, I prefer to listen to podcast while on the go and I have less than 1GB of audio files to listen. For what concern apps I have many of them, but I removed some heavy ones like MS Office or iWork, even Garage band and iMovie. I don't play games on the iPhone so my 100+ apps are just utilities, social networks, newspapers and catalogs.
If I take a long video I move it to the Mac and remove it from the iCloud library so I save space both on the device and on iCloud.

Using Apple Music and iCloud Photo Library, those are my big offenders as I've got 7 gigs of music and 13 of photos on my 64 - but it's a work phone, before that I've had just 16s and never had a problem, optimizing and streaming in that case... even having all my music local - I still only listen to a fraction of it, with streaming, there's not much need to keep it all local - at least for me anymore... I do think that 64 is sort of the sweet spot though, I'm sure I could get by with 32, but 64 feels just about ideal.

I must be one of the few that use the phone as a phone lol. I use icloud for everything. So 64 would be more than enough for me.

I bought a 256 7 Plus thinking that I'd like to have ALL of my music with me (around 120GB) at all times. I have come to realize that there is zero reason for that and I have moved to all iCloud between my iPhone and iPad. It has been really nice not to worry about storage at all anymore and this will continue with the 64 X. More than enough space.

I have a simple and healthy solution.

I don’t horde useless data; like texts or chats for the last 10 years. Pictures and movies I store locally on NAS because storage is dirt cheap this days.

64gb is more than enough for my needs. I don't keep music on my phone, I have an iPod Nano for that (it's 5 years old now, ancient in Apple's eyes). I also don't use WhatsApp, but Facebook Messenger instead. I've just come from a 16gb 6S, now that I was beginning to fill up, mainly with pictures. :p

I have 128GB 7+ and I'm only using 32 gigs. I use everything for iCloud and Spotify.

64Gb is the new 32gb. It's not enough. I have over 65Gb of music on my 256Gb phone. I know, I know...I should embrace icloud and streaming but I can't let go of having the music permanently on a device.

I keep all my music on my phone too. I believe about half what you have. Nothing wrong with it at all.

My 6s Plus is 64 and says I have only used 26GB of it. All my media storage (movies, tv, documents, exc.) are all on my iPad. I can't even imagine 256GB being useful for me right now. Maybe next year.

I have a 128gb iPhone but I know what is taking the space up. I keep a lot of music offline. If it wasn’t for my music I could probably stick to 64GB easily but as one of my primary uses is as a music player I wouldn’t make that choice.
My data usage always adds up, I haven’t had massive ‘other’ data in years.

OP why do you have 20GB of WhatsApp data stored locally? Do you really need all that chat history stored on your phone, why not just keep it in the cloud back up or just delete it. I’m guessing it’s mostly photos/videos received in conversations. Why not move ones you want to keep into your iCloud Photo Library where it’s storage will then be optimised and delete any you don’t need to keep.

iOS can only go so far in helping you, people have to take some responsibility and owenership of their data management.

Just like a physical storage unit does, you need to keep on top of it to stop it getting messy and out of control.

Storage needs are becoming more complex than just 16gb is enough for light users and 128gb will be more than enough for anyone.

As we move to 4k video as standard, especially at 60fps, even with H.265 it takes up a large volume of space. Same with higher resolution and HDR photos and the files having ever more metadata attached to them so you can re-focus or whatever later on. Game sizes are continuing to increase, this will keep being the case as graphics get better, resolutions get higher, frame rates get smoother, sounds are more high quality, saves are more complex and therefore bigger.

Balancing that is the wider and more reliable access to cloud storage, though this isn't for everyone - beit for reasons of privacy, cellular or wifi unreliability or whatever. Ultimately, now, if you're someone who wants to keep things locally, 64gb is probably of little more use to you than 16gb was to an iPhone 5s user; but if you're a lighter user, having 64gb available and ample cloud storage is almost excessive.

So to answer your question, basically you have to decide if you want to keep all/ most things locally on your device - in which case it probably isn't going to be easy (or even possible) with 64gb, or if you're willing to embrace the cloud as the solution.
