Argh! I'm suffering with only 15GB (3G iPod), but can't justify buying a 5.5G iPod...

Yeah, I always find this humorous. I listen to my iPod so I don't have to listen to the radio...

Not all radio is music...and podcasts don't cover everything...for a player that won't hold most people's library, a tuner is nice...

First post here so please be gentle. :D

Ok, I've enjoyed the thread's ideas about release dates and new features (ex:touch screen, etc.).

But nobody's contributed any actual video spec speculation. (Yes, pun intended.)

Currently the iPod 5.5 plays video that is, at most complex, H.264 with the Baseline profile, 640x480 max rez, 1500kbps video bitrate, stereo AAC up to 160kbps, and no CABAC. Personally, these specs are enough for the small screen and speakers, but if I want to play this on a bigger screen with a stereo system I wish to hook the iPod to, frankly, they're quite weak.

I'd like to hear what people's opinions are on this.

Personally, I'd love to see Main Profile and CABAC playback - better compression for its higher quality. How about more HD-like resolutions? Anamorphic video (other than just square pixels) would be awesome. And if you really want high quality, 1500kbps is too low.

Cmon Steve, give the world it's first "real" high quality portable video machine finally.

Yeah, I think we're one of the few cities resentful that we don't have an MLB team.
Just thought I'd comment here too. I am originally from Montreal, Quebec. All those years that the Montreal Expos were threatening to leave I remember telling everybody that I REFUSE to live in a city without Major League Baseball. Period!

When the Expos did finally anounce their departure, I left within a couple of months. I am a man of my word.

Well, what made it easy was I never liked the province of Quebec anyway, so I was looking for yet "one more reason" to leave anyway. Screw'em.

The Big Merge.

I think that at some point the ipod video and apple tv are going to merge.
it will have a 3" (more or less) multi-touch screen if you are using its portable way, and it will be linkable to your HD LCDs. They'll sell it with the remote.

I know Apple people read these threads to get new ideas.. so here you got some. (hi Steve!)

Andrea,

still so happy with my PB12" 1.5

It never occured to me that the iPod video and :apple: TV could merge, that is really interesting, and like you said surely Apple has something amazing up their sleeves with that, it just seems logical but at the same time mysterious.

I hope that whatever Apple does, they keep the iPod video and nano separate, I don't want an awesome iPod Video and then a smaller iPod video as the nano. I use the nano solely for exercise/airline travel and it is superb at that, I don't know how it could improve besides size, battery life, screen. Also, the nano's integration with Nike+ is amazing, hopefully it improves in ways people never imagined (which is what Apple has done before!).

Well if @Tv and iPod do merge, then only video with the least common denominator will be compatible between the two. In other words, the video with the weaker specs, and ATM, that is the iPod. So in a way, that will stifle the highest potential of the @Tv somewhat indirectly.

Then again, this could be more incentive for Apple to provide higher quality video specs for the iPod since this merger will surely create the need for iPod to have big-screen quality playback built-in.

All the other proposed features are nice, but my request to Apple is higher quality video for the iPod. Then I'm set for years...
