Please correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a 32bit operating system (10.5.x) on 32bit hardware correct? Am I missing something?

OS X is partially 64-bit, sufficiently so that addressing beyond 32-bit is fine. The SR memory controller can address 8 gb of RAM and the Core 2 Duo processors are 64-bit. Plus, Mac Pros can have 32 gb of RAM.

Thank you for the clarification.

I was confused at first when I saw the specifications of the iMac, limited to 4GB.... After a bit of searching this certainly is a 64bit platform.

Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere...long time PC user trying to get caught up....

... and it's PC2 5300, 667 MHz. Don't we need PC2 6400, 800 MHz??

Yes, we do and I THOUGHT that looked awfully cheap...

I guess it's a moot point since it's out of stock anyway, but If I could at another 2Gb to my soon arriving iMac for $150, I'd probably hop on that...

Although, I just put 4Gb in my 2.2 ghz MBP (pc5300) and this dude is INVINCIBLE now! Well, I haven't tried to record multi track audio on Pro tools yet, but I opened EVERY major program ran videos in ALL of the programs that could run it at once... had a virtual XP machine running in Fusion and STLL had a Gb of ram available..

Not sure I'd ever even NEED 6b... but it would be cool to have it none the less.. Kind of like having a 250 hp shot of NOS on a 1000hp turbo engine in it... you know.. just in case...;)

The performance delta between 667 and 800mhz is not that much, if you really need more ram I think having 6gb og 667mhz is betetr that 4gb of 800hz

FWIW, I have a Hackintosh and just put in 8GB of RAM, seems to be working fine. Anyone have a copy of Piggy I could use to test it for sure?

Would this RAM work in a new 24" iMac?

Also would it work in a 2007 MBP?

Sorry, both of my machines have 2GB of RAM and I am looking to upgrade them both to 4GB.

Oh and also, this link shows 8GB in a 24" iMac. Eroor on their part or...?

Go with the G.Skill kits. They make amazing ram. I've used several sets by them now in both Macs and PC's and it works fabulously.

I just bought a 4gb dimm for my MacBook Pro but decided to try the IMAC first.

do you have a link to the specific memory you bought?

No, you don't need 6400.

can you mix and match? IE can the 2gb stick be 6400/800 while the 4gb is 5300/667? Also, does anyone really know what the difference is in terms of 6gb of the slower -vs- 4gb of the faster? And lastly, can anyone find 200 pin 6400/800 4gb sticks? I'd rather go that route if it's available, but I can't seem to find it....

TIA.

I'm convinced. Looks like 6 gb in Santa Rosa iMac is good to go. Not surprising considering the SR MBP results. It would probably be the same in the SR MacBook, too; and perhaps even 8 gb since its vRAM is shared with RAM and wouldn't have addressing issues beyond 8 gb (i.e., from the vRAM in the dedicated graphics cards). Thanks for your efforts.

Which MacBooks are SR and can they take a 4 Gig chip?

Interesting. It is tempting to double the three gigs i have today, but i think I'll wait until Snow Leopard.

It is correct to assume that the Mid 2007, "iMac 7,1", can use these, is it not?

Still, RAM should be installed in pairs

Call me old fashioned but installing RAM that is not a paired/matched set (ie sticks of identical 2GB of RAM to make 4 GB of total RAM) makes me go hmmm.

If you want the double channel benefit(3-5%) then yes you need two identical sticks, but if you need more ram 6gb trumps the loss in performance

I've installed 6gb and am having problems

I have a 3.06 24" Imac. I purchased it about 3 mo ago. I've installed an additional 4gb pc2 6400 800mhz 200 pin sodim. Almost immediately, my computer froze up. I dismissed it. But pretty much daily, I have to do a hard reset. Today, I've removed the 4gb and replaced it with a 2gb for a total of 4gb. I'll see if I still have problems with everything locking up.

The memory I installed is from HP, and I guess there's also the possibility that the memory is defective. Has anyone else installed a total of 6gb and have problems with the mac locking up?

If you want to use more that 4GB of ram on that machine you need to get the 667 MHz ram not the 800.

My Imac takes 800mhz. So you're saying even though specs call for 800mhz ram, in order to run 6gm I have to drop down to 667mhz? That doesn't sound right.
