There's an app called 'pig' that was written by a forum member that takes up 1 gb of ram at a time (you may have to search for it or send me an email). If you run 7 instances with 8 gb installed and your computer doesn't stall out, you're accessing all 8 gb without a problem. My 2.4 gHz MBP (non unibody) can only access 6 gb and after 4 gb (i.e., 4 instances of pig running) it brings it to its knees.

Have a 2008 late mbp 2.4
Just upgraded to 8 GB today.

Try stressing it and
free memory 512.8 mb
used 7.50 GB

Does it mean it reads and access all the 8GB?

Yes, I think the early 08 can only do 6 gb and models from then on can do 8 gb.

So if I but a MacBook pro 15in i5 this week would that be a model cable of this? I'm pretty sure it would be because Apple offers a upgrade to 8gigs but there is not way I'm going to pay there prices.

15" i5 works great with 8GB of RAM.

The HW change in the 15-17" MBP allowing 8GB of RAM occurred in early 09.

Guys,

Does the PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) work on the UMBP late 2008? i have custom 2.8 so 8GB works on my machine.
The current memory is : DDR3-1066

I bought my MBP unibody in early December 08. Do you guys think I can support 8 GB ram? Also where is a good cheap place to buy some RAM in Australia, Melbourne specifically?

Cheers guys.

Upgrade does not work

Hi guys,

My system:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz

have been running with a 2gb and a 1gb RAM. Today I have received the following 4gb RAM which I want to add with the exsiting 2gb:

4GB DDR2 SODIMM (200 pin) 667Mhz PC2 5400 / PC2 5300 CL 5.0
by KOMPUTERBAY bought on amazon

Is this the wrong RAM, Cause as I have been following the thread and 6gb should work.

What happens is the the the laptop starts but the light indicator in the front just flashes and the screen stays black.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I have a 2010 13" MBP 2.4.

I am looking to maybe get 1 x 4GB to make it 6. Now would 6GB working on single channel (whatever that means) be faster than 4GB working on dual? Or do I need to go to 8 to make a significant difference?

Also I been looking at the newgg site and I dont see any DDR3 1067.. if someone can link me to the proper ram I should be buying that would be great.

THANKS

Mesabugi - where did you buy your ram and what kind is it? I've got a late 08 2.53ghz system and I'm going to pull the trigger on 8gb soon but want to at least give myself a fighting chance of it working...

Thanks, Rex

Look at the OWC site. I have the exact same computer as you do, and it's saying that it maxes out at 6GB. Everyone else has told me the same thing.

We can't run 8GB.

I see that but there are various cases (such as Mesabugi's above) where it appears users are able to upgrade their late 08's to 8gb. I'm prepared to gamble the 15% restocking fee to try it out...

Check these 2 other pages (one's in this very thread) where anecdotally the 8gb works:

OK - I've pulled the trigger. I'll report back if it doesn't work out and you guys can all tell me so :D

more importantly report back if it does!

although, i recently upgraded from 4gb to 6gb, and it doesn't seem to have made a lick of difference in how quickly my ram gets swallowed up and gigabytes of pageouts grind my system to a halt! i swear its a snow leopard/adobe cs suite issue, but no one else seems to be experiencing it quite to the same extent that i do.

anyway, eager to hear if 8gb is a viable option, i have the late '08 custom 2.8.

6 gigs on 2.53 mhz MBP

I was getting maybe monthly freezes on my 2.53 MacBook Pro, mostly when using the 9600 graphics chip BEFORE upgrading to 6 gigs of Ram.

Now I get freezes where everything looks up, or kernel panics where the screen goes gray and you get the white power symbol telling you to do a forced shutdown about once a week. The ram is Corsair, purchased from Fry's. 2 weeks after I bought it OWC had it for the same price.

I do appreciate the extra speed in Photoshop CS5, and with Lightroom 3, and since the RAM isn't returnable now, I live with the once a week freezes.

However, I do believe there is a reason Apple still only officially recognizes 4 Gigs as the Max, whereas OWC says it will run 6 Gigs.

Machines built after late 2008 are said to run 8 gigs by both Apple and OWC, so you shouldn't have a problem.

I have AppleCare until March 2012, and the machine had freezes even with 4 gigs, so I'm hoping to wait and then maybe get a new free upgrade (Hey, we can dream, can't we?)

What kind of Page out/in and Swap stats should we be looking for when deciding about whether or not we need to upgrade our ram? Right now I'm sitting at 8mb/128mb swap, and 85,438 Page ins and 97 page outs.

I always used Free ram + inactive ram to judge. If those two combined is low, its time for more ram. (with the applications you normally have open running)
