ok I used Disk Utility / Verify and there was indeed a problem with the HD, something to do with the "Volume Header." So I backed up important data and used the Repair function. Everything seems fine now. 
When I originally cloned the HD and then fitted it in the MacBook, the system was up and running so I assumed the cloning process had worked. I didn't think to check the disk for glitches. So I'm glad I mentioned it here and I'm glad you suggested there may be a problem with the HD.
