Received the phone a few hours ago, updated it to iOS 9.1 PB 2, reset (erase all contents and settings), and then started the restore from iCloud. The phone just came out of the initial restore phase and I can finally see / use some of it. The top portion (top 1-1/2 to 2 inches - front and back) of the phone is scorching hot. Hotter than any other time I've felt an iPhone. Did I just overwork the thing? During all this time its been sitting on my bed in a room cooled to 68º.

Did you get hot pink?

ruthless.

Maybe it has a fever. It's been going around.

My 6 got super hot sometimes when I updated it and it was doing whatever magic it needed to do to function properly again.

Running 9.0.1 here, 6S hasn't heated up really at all. It got warm after the install but that's as far as it went.

but wait, you're room is 68*?

Haha! Yea I keep it at 68º. Is that crazy?

And the phone has cooled down a bit but it is still pretty warm on top. Earlier it was downright hot. Now it is just warmer than usual. But iCloud restore is still in progress. Not complaining, I'm sure it will be fine. Just observing, wondering of others feel this.

Work from initial set up/syncing + charging = more heat. Under normal use it should run cooler.

Guys, just wait for it to cache up all the system files and configure everything. I've owned iPhones since the 3G, and every new iPhone gets hot (especially the 4S), but will cool down within a day when all files, apps, and system are cached in.

My 6 ran super hot for the first few hours I had it last year, and this new 6s Plus did today as well, but now it's back to normal. Might be a battery break-in thing?

My 6S Plus is running so hot that it's limiting brightness to 50%. Hopefully this isn't the case during regular usage. I'm currently restoring all of my content, which is a lot.

Most likely but this is a bit more than the usual heat up. As hot as I've ever felt a phone. Not normal hot. Even for setup. That being said my restore has finally finished and it has cooled down dramatically. I'm sure it will be fine.

Most likely Spotlight (search) indexing of data. Not only new features, but these indices are generally not transferred or stored in backups, so a restore will force/require some rebuild at the very least, but depending on what previous iOS level you are upgrading from/transferring from, new features in iOS 9 as it relates to Spotlight will also require reindexing of even existing indices.

Bottom line: it'll settle down when it's run through the data it needs to examine.

Hey guys I'm playing with my new phone, running through settings, syncing, charging, and restoring all at the same time. BUT I CANT FIGURE OUT WHY MY PHONE IS SO HOT. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE APPLE
