I remembered this thread just now when I put my 6S+ in landscape mode (I totally dig on it for using it at my desk), and wondering if you've installed 9.0.2 yet - and most importantly, if it resolved it?
See above. Me and few other folks had this behavior, i.e., didn't rotate until you touched/tapped (interacted like you said), then it was fine, even though in apps it worked fine.

My solution was to set it to zoom, let it reboot, then set it back to standard, fixed. That trick didn't work for the other folks in this thread having the same issue.
I'm still having a bug that when I try to switch to zoomed mode it doesn't reset the phone. It just makes the screen go dark and the phone non-responsive. I have to manually reset (after which the phone is in zoomed mode). Weird.

It may or may not be related, but that's definitely not the expected behavior.

Heck, I'll give it a shot again ... just a sec.

Oh yeah, I guess it does like a "soft boot", when you hit SET, then confirm, it just goes dark for 3-5 seconds and comes right back to the display setting, but it IS set for the other mode, then I went out, confirmed no landscape modes on Home, Mail, Settings, then back to display, same process but selected Standard, I'm back, landscape modes are back working as expected, including Home.

Mine just goes dark and does not come back on. I know the phone is still on because I can ping it with my Apple Watch, but I can't get it to turn back on until i do a reset (holding home and lock buttons until apple logo appears). I wouldn't be surprised if it's related.

Yeah, me neither. I wonder what's preventing the clean reset[?] Maybe try going into the task manager, shutting down all apps (you know, flip 'em up), doing a full power down, cold start, go directly to display?

When I do the zoom then standard work around it doesn't work. Last time I tried it I wasn't able to get the phone to rotate at all when flipped back to standard view. This is defiantly worse in ios9.

May try that. I also may just go in to see a genius in the next few days.

Just tried it and I got the same thing - told me I needed to restart to apply it, I hit okay, then the screen went black until I force-rebooted. Happened both times (switching to zoom and then changing it back) No luck on the home screen rotation either, it still sticks until I switch screens or open a folder.

Oh, and I noticed something else - when it's stuck in the wrong layout (i.e. portrait when the phone is in landscape), if I pull up the app switcher and cancel back out to the home screen things get weird. Looks like the background rotates to the correct position, but nothing else does?

Might be a glitch with the perspective/depth effect? I'll try setting it to still later and see what happens.

Edit: Set both my wallpapers to still, nothing changed. Oh well

I find it much better on my 6s+ than on my 6+.

Everything is much better on the 6S+ (*apart from the loudspeaker) but certain nagging issues still remain, even if minor versions of them. Nothing that frazzles me though, I love this phone.

Glad it's not just me, but sorry you're having the same issue. Anyone else?

definitely having the same issue here. goes into landscape (often when i wake the phone after setting it on a table or as i'm picking it up) and then refuses to go back no matter how i hold it. i usually just open up some sort of app, have it rotate within that app, and then go back to the home screen and it's fine. minor annoyance but not something that should be happening. sounds like this has always been an issue? i hope that's not actually the case because if so it means apple had a year to fix it and didn't bother. if it's something that's only happening with the newer iOS then I imagine it will be fixed soon.

The 6+ did all of this from day one so yes, they have had a year to fix it.

I have a 6S+ on iOS 9.0.1 and have the same problem.

The only way I managed to make the screen rotate is to engage it (e.g. swipe left/right/up/down) or open an app that works in both orientations. Then the screen seems to respond.

Definitely buggy.

Do you also have the zoom/standard switch bug?

Well, I did have my display set to "Zoomed" before, and attempted to change it to "Standard" per this thread. My screen went black, and when it didn't respond after a couple of seconds, I forced it to restart by holding the buttons. Is that the bug you are referring to?

That's exactly it. That's three of us now in this thread. Interesting...

I notice this happens sometimes when I am in multi-app view. Sometimes the home screen goes landscape but the rest of the apps don't. In the end it always goes back to normal so no big deal for me.

Does 9.0.2 help this?

- Fixes an issue where the screen could incorrectly rotate when receiving notifications

yay, got it fixed- did a “reset all settings” and my home screen rotates as expected.

edit: not sure if this also fixed the black-screening after changing the display zoom, i’d test it out, but i prefer it on standard anyway so it’s not a but deal (and with my luck it would mess up the rotation again :( )

I had this issue for the first couple days of owning the phone. Then suddenly it just started working perfectly. Then I updated to 9.0.2 and it's back to not working again. I'm hoping it just goes away again at some point in the next day or two again. I have no idea what I did to make it start working, so I can't replicate that.

i just updated to 9.0.2 and tested this and it's working fine now. i can make it go into landscape mode on the home screen and then flip the phone and it corrects itself. based on the above post, i don't think 9.0.2 necessarily fixed anything, but for some reason mine is working right now. it might be a certain set of circumstances that result in the issue and maybe i'm just not recreating them right now. will have to see how it goes over the next day or two.

Ha! Glad it worked. I'm not sure i want to "reset all settings" though. How much time did it take to re-reset your settings after resetting them?

It's still a work in progress, but a lot of that is because I got greedy and did a dumb - tried restoring from the icloud backup I took right before the reset, to see if that would fix the rotation bug without making me redo all my settings (I've had that work in the past with other weird iphone glitches, figured it was worth a shot?)

Nope! Not only did the bug come back, but something got super hosed during the restore. My recent calls and all my imessages are gone, it took forever for the apps to redownload and a whole bunch are crashing on launch until I delete them/redownload (so far: nintype, chrome, plague inc, one of my banks' apps, giffer, credit karma). And there was a ton of flakiness with imessages, mail, facetime, etc. until i signed out/back in my apple id.

That said, if you just do the reset it's not too bad. You should be able to get things 99% back to where they were with like 20-30 minutes of poking around in Settings.

9.0.2 did not do anything to solve this. My phone has AIDs. I'm not resetting anything. That sounds like a cop-out from Apple because they can't solve the issue. Effing ridiculous.
