Oh wait, I have an iPad:
(Mini on left, 6S on right)

The 6s has lower resolution, way more light bleeding, and clearly worse contrast and dynamic range here. It being “more bright” to me just looks like the screen being unable to paint the really dark areas of that photo accurately because of the backlight blowing out the shadows 🤷‍♂️

No idea if this is different when looking at something like the Notes app, but this is not a great example speaking for the 6s screen

Who said the car was broken? Coilovers are a thing.
Eicca give the 12 mini a chance and see how you feel after a few months maybe. Ive got a 6s, 6s+, 8+, SE2 aswell as my 12 mini, and i have to say the OLED screen on the mini is overall better than the LCD panels, but the LCD is better in some conditions like in bright sunlight, and they do not have PWM.

Just curious what car have you got that you want to buy coil overs for?

Despite having bought a 12mini last Dec. as an emergency spare I'm hanging onto my 6s to the bitter end. Its screen is definitely whiter despite having turned off the mini's default True Tone and auto brightness. May even get the 6s's battery replaced yet again.Window of opportunity apparently shuts this Dec.

iFixit batteries will keep that thing alive longer than you’d care to keep it alive. I’ve had two genuine Apple batteries fail in my 6S after just a few months and my iFixit DIY is still at 100% health a year later.

Nice 1-uz. Have you replaced the starter yet?
Can you switch on and then switch immediately off “reduce white point” in accessibility-display section of settings?

Ha, not on mine, but I have done it on a Land Cruiser 2UZ. Thankfully my starter has been replaced at some point as I found out when I pulled the intake to replace the solenoid for the variable runners. Still not as bad as doing it on a 2GR or 3UR from the IS/GS350s and Tundras. Gotta pull the heat-welded rusty exhaust manifolds to get to those.

Messing with white point didn't seem to do anything, but the screens look a little more evenly matched in the daylight.

Am I crazy? Just got a 12 Mini after five years of my faithful 6S and the Mini screen looks more dull with less contrast under all conditions, brightness levels, etc.

That’s a bit disappointing.

Mini has much better contrast, blacks are true blacks, it reaches higher peak brightness and has HDR and Dolby Vision. It also has P3 and True Tone. It’s a leap over the 6S screen (which is still good). It might be the content you’re viewing, personal taste, etc.

But there is just no way the contrast is better and brightness higher on 6S, unless you have a faulty unit somehow.

My father has a 12 Mini, its screen is very, very close to my 12 Pro and is stunning.

You’re bugging if you think an LCD panel can’t beat the contrast of an OLED panel. OLED will always win that fight. The brightness of the mini peak is like 1,000? Or something with around an average of 600? Something like that. I don’t think the 6s can even do HDR.

I tried to get a good 12 Mini four times, and all of them had screen issues (low contrast, yellow-ness, extreme color shift off-angle, etc). Gave up after four tries and decided to wait for the 13 to see if anything changes.

Since trying these, I have seen a few regular 12 models in the wild. The screens on those were stunning and better than my current X. So I wasn’t crazy with the Mini, they were lesser screens than the 12s I have viewed.

There is a very long thread on MacRumors about yellow screens and raises blacks on certain 12s. It’s become very heated and polarizing, but I think you may have ended up with one of the phones that leads people to that thread (the same way I found it.)

Very interesting. Good input.

I’ve decided I’m going to keep the Mini, lackluster screen aside. It’s slick and gets nearly double the battery of my 6S.

But now it seems to be heating up a lot on me. My 6S never did that…

mine also does the same. The weather of 100F doesn't help a lot also.
I would say even more, that 12PM of my wife does overheat a lot even if it is much less than 12 mini. This internal CPUs also 5g external modem add up a lot of heat to dissipate.

You got a faulty mini then. I compared the mini to the 6S and SE and the Mini screen is way better. Especially the colors. The 6s is a low-res LCD with a contrast ratio of 800:1 while the mini has a higher res OLED with a contrast ratio of 1000000:1

the Mini has the exact same screen as the regular 12 and the pros so all of them would have worse screens than previous phones, which makes no sense at all.

If you look at those side by side - I have the opposite impression - the 6S's screen is "blown", with light bleed through and color loss. The mini has much greater contrast and darks. You can especially see the problem in what is supposed to be the dark area in the middle, just below the date.

Turns out it's just MacRumors forums that cause it to spontaneously bake. It seems to be a known issue. Wonder if they'll ever fix that...

But anyway, it's been two days now, and I understand why these sell so well. Yes, the functions are basically the same as the 6S if you're referring to calls, texts, browsing and taking some quick photos. But my goodness the 12 Mini is slick slick slick. All I want to do is play with it. Definitely a keeper.

Alright, I'm willing to eat (almost) everything I said. The 6S still looks better in terms of general UI presentation when the brightness is all the way down, buuuuuut....

Holy moly HDR is insane. Now I've got the itch for an HDR/Atmos home theater setup. And the contrast with dark mode is just fantastic. Love it.

Yday I compared my 6S to every 13 mini on the Apple Store floor with all the settings mentioned so far (+ colour filter & white point) set exactly the same. Disappointingly, I believe my 6S's screen was better!

The 6S's LED crystals & backlight seems to make the colours more vibrant, the whites less "dirty" & everything brighter than the 13's Oled screen. Yes the 13 has true black but I only noticed this when video faded to black... which was once & in terms of normal phone usage would be never.

With the screens that size, the extra resolution on the 13 is unnoticeable!! I ran a 4K video on the 13 alongside the same video in 1080p on the 6S and couldn't tell the difference. With video being played at 16:9 dimensions, the size of picture on the 13 was actually a fraction smaller.

If you look at your photos on the phone's screen you will also not notice anything different from the 13's better camera as the quality of the pictures is limited by screen resolution. Think watching 4K content on a 1080p TV screen.

Apple are the masters of selling specs which make absolutely no difference in practice. They're selling wolf tickets & people are eating them right up. Part of me admires that.

Well just wait until you try HDR photos and other content. Then you won't be able to go back.

Same for me as for the OP. My old iPhone 6 screen looks better than new 13 mini. Quite a disappointment…

I have both phones and the 12 Mini looks way better than the 6S. This is purely to do with the OLED panel with beautiful blacks and zero light bleeding. The 12 Mini was my first OLED phone and I was immediately blown away by the difference when watching a Netflix show in bed whilst in the dark.

That doesn’t mean the 6S doesn’t have a great panel. It’s identical to my 8 and looks crisp and clear. Definitely a great screen even by today’s standards.

I do not watch videos on my phone so can't really compare those circumstances. Might be as you say.

For my use (e-mail, FaceTime, iMessage, light browsing, few apps) the 6 somehow looks better. I have True Tone off on the 13 mini but the 6 has a better white, whereas the 13 is more yellowish.

Yep. The image is far better with videos but the colour on other applications is different as the whites appear to have a yellow hue. The 6S has the whitest whites… even my SE1 is slightly yellow compared to it.

Thank you for those insights, @Andeddu. Was not aware that the 6 has the best white. I assumed this to be the standard.
