Beyond fanboys, the 7" iPad is unwanted.

Most of us have held an iPad and held an iPod Touch. Getting something in the middle is too small to do anything useful, like read, and too big to fit in your pocket.

Why would anyone want this?

A 7-inch iPad could be a good move, but I really hope that Apple won't launch a new 9.7" iPad with more RAM and a faster processor after 5-6 months after the first iPad.

It would be a kick in the ass of millions of people.

My guess is that they'll upgrade to the 512MB A4 (the one in the ip4) across all new iPhone/iPod/iPad, just makes things simpler and consistent.

(they should probably put it into the iPad now ... it'll be a kick to several less million asses come December!)

Isn't that what they said about the 9" iPad?

Fact is that the extremely popular small A format paperback book is 8.2" on the diagonal, with a usable print area of a pinch less than 7".

And you might be surprised at the percentage of current iPad customers who think an iPad is a bit on the heavy side for extended book reading. Chalk it up to poor fitness, or whatever, but that's still a good portion of the potential purchasing population. And an iPod Touch is really on the small side for older people who need reading glasses (another HUGE and increasing portion of the population). Different customers need (or are willing to pay for) different form factors, and it's way too early to say that Apple has all the (profitable) bases covered.

How is that? Are they going to sneak into people's homes and rip out the RAM they sold them?

I don't see this happening anytime soon. Current ipads are selling faster than they can be produced. Current iPad is highly successful.. Actually exceeded sales expectations by a wide margin. So with all this said...

Why would Apple come out with something to compete with it's own product? Unless Apple is really struggling to meet demand with the 9.7 inch screen, no need to fix or mod with what's not broken. On the contrary, no need to fix something that's been so far a overwhelmely successful product.

-Sent from my awesome iPad.

I think production of the screen is the reason why Apple can't keep up with demand. The rumors have the 7" screen coming from a different supplier. If that's the case then it actually could be a way for Apple to supply the overwhelming demand for an iPad even better. Some people who were considering the 10" ipad might go for the 7" one instead and others who never considered the larger one might opt for the smaller. They don't seem to have a problem getting enough RAM and other internal hardware.

If they release a 7 inch it, in all likelihood, will have the same resolution as the 9.7 inch: 1024 x 768. This will mean more PPI - not "retinal" but with a less "pixelly" screen.

So how will this work with stuff like fonts in magazines etc like Wired? Will they be the same font size but smaller visually, or larger font size to be the same readable size on both versions' screens?

I could see a 7" iPad selling for around 300 and the 3G version for 450.

$300? remember, this is Apple you are talking about... My bet will be $399 to $429 for 7".

(probably iPod starting at $199, iPad 5" $299, 7" $399, ...)

I for one think it would be great. Just a little trimmer to fit in my laptop bag.

As to just the fanboys wanting it - the same was said about the original iPad stealing sales from the 13.3" MacBook Pro. It won't happen. As the original larger iPad gains traction in the business enterprise environment it will pick up any slack that might have been created from increased consumer demand on the 7".

Believe me - this is a smart move - especially if the 7" comes with FaceTime capability.

From 1 guy's perspective... I'd rather have a larger iPhone (4.3" Droid X or 5" Streak sized) than a 7" iPad. I doubt that will happen but who knows....

Agree about the larger iPhone. While I love the form factor and retina display of the iP4 - the small screen size (and AT&T's network) is holding me back. I am now leaning toward an EVO 4G. I want at least a 4" screen on my phone. Now, that said - we have family members that have iP4's and they want us to get a FaceTime enabled device so the cousins can chat for free. If I don't get an iP4 then I will either get the next iPod Touch or better yet a 7" iPad with FaceTime.

In fact - a 7" screen would be much better for FaceTime than the iPhone4.

I am hoping that the next iPhone has a larger screen while still retaining the sleek slim form factor and retina display. Hell, even a 3.7" screen size would be a nice bump. Give me that and I will buy in a heartbeat.

For now - I will settle for a 7" FaceTime equipped iPad.

When do you think it would be announced? I'm planning on getting a new 4th gen touch, but would get this instead if it was confirmed! Thoughts??

I've been thinking exactly the same thing - my first-gen iPod Touch is showing its age, but I'm "driving it until it dies" for this very reason.

I thought 9 inches was just the right size but my wife says it is too big,

Nothing to add - I just thought it needed to be quoted. :D

MacBook Air Son ...... MacBook Air

I love my MacBook Air! And it's the main reason I don't want the current-sized iPad - there's just not enough difference in terms of portability between the Air and the iPad.

Then I'm not sure 7" is right. Paperbacks would be 5" or 6", textbooks at least 10".

My wife's Kindle has a 6" screen - really I think that'd be about perfect for a smaller iPad. However 7" would be okay, as long as the bezel wasn't too wide.

The Kindle will fit in my coat pocket or cargo pocket on my pants - that's really what I want for the iPad, size-wise. The Kindle's bezel is probably wider than a smaller iPad's would be, so I'm guessing a 7" iPad will fit in the same places as the Kindle (and will probably be shorter since there's no keyboard).

I agree. If the iPad 7" started at roughly $300 it would cut into the sales of the iPod touch unless Apple "magically" did a huge price drop on all of its iPods. One of the reasons Apple is a super succesful products is because of its huge ego, well made products that just "work", and the features that they have. I see the 7" iPad if it even comes starting at $399 at least.

i think it's just 'different strokes for different folks'... people have different uses and requirements.

On a side note: LG, Dell, Acer, Samsung are all coming out with 7" Android tablets. Basically, I think they believe there's a market for a sub-$500 devices and are looking to undercut the $499 iPad. It makes sense for Apple to have a tablet offering somewhere that bridges the gap between the iPod and the iPad (price-point-wise).

This is what I believe to be most likely, that sub-$500 market is the target for the 7" if it exists. In order to accomplish this, it would essentially have to have the same innards as the current iPad, maybe MAYBE a RAM bump, but not much more than that. Remember, to keep it at a low price point to give those other tablets and e-readers a swift blow, is what I think would be the intent of the 7", you can't start adding all the iPad 2nd gen features to it (ala you long wish lists that never get fulfilled anyways). It's all about price point and competition. Just food for thought.

A 7" iPad would be awesome. I like my current iPad. But I would love a smaller 7" version instead. It would make it much easier to hold while reading. And a lot more portable.

But before any other iPad is made, the current one NEEDS iOS 4. I'm using my iPad less and less every day because of it not having iOS 4. In fact, I haven't used it since last Wednesday. Just the occasional syncing to update apps.

It's getting difficult to be an Apple fan, is not it? So many devices. People used to be able to afford to buy all Apple gadgets (whether they needed them or not). It might become too costly of a hobby soon :) Apple is in danger of loosing its fans.

I hate to tell you but this is the exact way Apple works!

Everything, not just font size, will be slightly smaller if the resolution is kept this same for the 7 inch. As for the "Wired" app, it depends if Apple allow different variation of apps on each iPad; however, the Wired app developer could implement a font size slider (if it already doesn't).

To give you a rough idea: on the 7 inch iPad font will look -1 pt. So 12pt will look like 11pt on the 7 inch.

7" iPad would be awesome. If...

It's widescreen... We need widescreen so it functions more as a Portable Media Player and you can still read book on a widescreen. By widescreen I mean iPhone style not really anything more wide than that so all the games can be played. Heck, they could even use the same exact pixel numbers as the 4 on a bigger screen.

Heh, next month you can get the Samsung Galaxy 1000 tablet, widescreen, with the best Super AMOLED screen on the market, 1.2GHz A8 processor, 16GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 3G/WiFi, front and back cameras, and running Android 2.2, of course.

Yep I'm seeing that happening also. And I really like the idea of a 7"; the weight and size of the 9" are just that little bit much from my experience. Holding it for a while just gets a little less than ideal.
