It won't kill the iPod touch because you can't stick an iPad in a jeans pocket.

That's been the deal-breaker for me. I need some way to wear an iPad on my body, preferably concealed.

I've thought about making some kind of a belt or a sling, or in the winter a large jacket would work...

(When I was a teenager, cargo pants were popular.)

If a 7 inch ipad comes out, it would kill the following.....

-ipod touch
-PSP
-Nintendo DS
-Amazon Kindle
-Nook
-Zune
-netbooks

- No.
- Already dead.
- No.
- Not unless the price is much lower.
- Ditto.
- Already dead.
- No more so than the existing iPad is killing netbooks.

What do you expect, Apple has competition and iPad Rev A has short comings.

A 7-inch iPad could be a good move, but I really hope that Apple won't launch a new 9.7" iPad with more RAM and a faster processor after 5-6 months after the first iPad.
Certainly a 7 inch device has potential. However if they keep the same aspect ratio as the iPad that could be a problem.

As to Rev'ing iPad this fall why not? Any body with any technical sense knows it doesn't have enough RAM especially when it comes to iOS 4.x. I suspect we will see a memory bumped iPad when iOS 4.x is available on iPad.
It would be a kick in the ass of millions of people.

That is simply ignorant!!!!! IPad is very much a Rev A device that gives us a taste of what is possible on the platform. It is obvious that the platform does not realize all of Apples goals. Plus iPhone 4 demonstrates that the upgrade tech is viable and ready.

Besides all of that if Apple does upgrade this fall it gives them a cushion next year for delivery of a Cortex A9 based processor in iPad. For most people an Cortex A9 based iPad is the one to wait for. More so it will be the one that is worth holding onto for awhile.

In the end you have no one to blame but yourself. Seriously you purchased a bleding edge product.

I haven't got an iPad because I simply don't like the size of it - too big to be truly portable and the resolution is too low for the screen size. However, if they release a 7" one, I'll be all over it :)

IF (and this is only a rumor remember) these parts are being made, perhaps they're for another device entirely. Remember the rumors of the new AppleTV being more like an iPod Touch? And costing only $99?

Also the picture associated with this story is not only distorted (into a rhomboid) but lacks the correct bezel size. Simply scaling down the 9.5 inch iPad in Photoshop doesn't produce the right two-handed grip device. While we can hold a Touch or iPhone in one hand and work the screen with the other, a 7 inch device is too large for that, so the bezel needs to be as wide as on the current iPad; otherwise there would be a lot of unintentional screen touches.

Nice!

If the 7 inch iPad has a:
  • Front facing camera
  • More RAM
  • Faster Processor
  • Bigger Hard Drive
  • Back facing camera (don't mind if it does or doesn't)
  • A flash (if it has a back facing camera)
  • Gyroscope
Then I'm getting it.

The cameras i don't care about one way or the other. Especially a rear facing camera which is just silly.

I'd like to add to your list though:
1.
Built in GPS. It shouldn't be tied to a 3G card.
2.
A SD card reader. Two reasns here. First the obvious is photography. Second; these tablets are ideal for travel as such they are great for videos on a plane and SD is a good place to store those videos.
3.
To a lesser extent i would like additional environmental sensing. That would mean temperature and air pressure.

I don't see this happening anytime soon. Current ipads are selling faster than they can be produced. Current iPad is highly successful.. Actually exceeded sales expectations by a wide margin. So with all this said...

Why would Apple come out with something to compete with it's own product? Unless Apple is really struggling to meet demand with the 9.7 inch screen, no need to fix or mod with what's not broken. On the contrary, no need to fix something that's been so far a overwhelmely successful product.

My feeble predictions:

Touch across the line (perhaps retain a classic model with large HDD)

New tiny touch screen shuffle replacement

New 2.8 inch display touch Nano, App store capable, same resolution as current iPod Touch, rear camera, no WiFi, sync games, etc. via iTunes (this one a real stretch, but a big plus for developers, ...and kids on a more limited budget).

Old iPod touch at entry price (if new touch Nano, perhaps not)

New Retina based iPod touch, FaceTime, etc., same price points.

New 7 inch iPad, same res display as 9.7 inch, front camera, FaceTime, same processor, perhaps more RAM, but likely the same, price of $399 entry 16GB model, $499 32 GB, $599 64 GB and the $129 for 3G.

Current iPad 9.7 inch stays the same with the addition of a snap on camera accessory for use with FaceTime, no longer offer 16Gb model, pricing stays the same otherwise. Lower end taken over by 7 inch iPad, perhaps offer 32Gb for $549.

The problem with a touchscreen iPod shuffle is that the navigation menu and user interface is puny. If the current iPod shuffle had a touchscreen display, you'd basically cover it anytime you touched it.

What sort of utility do you gain with a touchscreen display the size of a postage stamp? That might be big enough to display album artwork, but little else. Frankly, I think that physical controls returning to the shuffle would be more useful. At least you can operate the device without looking at it.

I would love to see a 7" iPad with Facetime. If launched before Christmas...Apple would have the must have gift for Christmas. This is what I would love to see Apple do:

September – new iPods including the new form factor iPod Touch with Facetime (will be a huge product launch)
December – Proposed 7” iPad with Facetime for Christmas – again would be HUGE
January – iPhone (with working antenna and a larger screen) on Verizon – sign me up!
March – iPad2 with retina display and facetime
June – iPhone5 – with working antenna and larger screen (couldn’t resist)

Seriously - this approach would basically put Apple in a position where they would be able to defend against the onslaught of Android products - which will include tablets of various sizes. This market is exploding and unless Apple takes on different tablet sizes and gives a larger screen to the iPhone they will eventually begin to lose ground.

While the iPad and iPhone4 are selling like hotcakes - the competition is getting better than every before. Proof that the market is demanding larger screened smart phones is shown by the huge success of the 3.7" -4.3" smart phones from Android. Look at the Droid Incredible, Droid X and EVO 4G - all having supply issues. The Epic pre orders are already sold out - still two weeks from launch. The market has gone larger than the iPhone screen size and Apple needs to adapt.

Would you have had the same opinion if you had never seen the retina display?

I mean seriously, the display is not bad, its way better than the macbook(pro) ones, personally i would buy one if it was not that glossy, but thats just a matter of technology and time.

Regarding the iPad. I think its obvious that it'll have the same resolution as the 9.7" iPad and also that 7" is the least they could do with enjoyable ui and decent ppi.
And you guys should stop dreaming, it'll get the exactly same specs as the current iPad so there is no iPad cannibalization, but indeed e-reader aiming market strategy. Also i would be surprised if it was lower than 399$, because it's still apple we are talking about.

Than there is the iPod touch, obviously getting retina display, gyro, more ram, a4, n-wlan and front (rear) facing camera, so there are enough differentiating factors for buying an iPod and an iPad 7". So they won't have cannibalization there as well. What i'm wondering about is if there will be a inferior iPod touch or if the cheapest model is going all the way upgrading as well. I mean 199$ would be really cheap for all the new hardware, but on the other side if it would stay the same way as now, the difference between the cheap one and the others would be too huge compared with the difference of the current ones.

All in all i think it is a great idea and a very consumer friendly move. For example for me personally 3.3" are perfect for a cellphone, but a lot of my friends think the iphone's screen is too small. More choice means a higher consumer range.

Could someone tell me whats up with this cdma thing? I'm from germany and i think we don't have it over here.

Not likely this year

Considering how successful the iPad has been (I have one :D) I don't see Apple cannibalizing the sales for this year's holiday season. You introduce new form factors when the current business is starting to lag off or no longer increasing sales.

I'm sure that there is a 7" iPad going around Cupertino at this moment. And most likely there are other form factors as well. It would make sense for Apple to investigate several different sizes and eventually introduce more.

My own conspiracy theory is that this might be the 2nd generation iPad:

* 7" screen (Instead of 9.7") Retina display at same resolution of 9.7" screen.
* Front side camera for Facetime. Maybe a rear side, since this form factor is not too awkward to use as a camera.
* Gyroscope.
* 1 lb weight
* Starting price of $499 for 16GB wi-fi model (because of the extras added to the new model, they'll try to keep the same price point).

Not so feeble...in fact I think you are spot on. Especially your insight into dropping the low end iPad

I beg to differ. Many people thought that the iPad might steel sales from the MacBook Pro - and it didn't. Both have been climbing sharply.

The market is changing. People want touch capable devices that are easy to use. They also want portability. The iPad will continue to gain a foot hold in the business enterprise market and the 7" would just push further into the consumer market. Believe me - if they launched the 7" Apple would still be able to sell every 9.7" they made.

Don't you think Apple should have thought this while developing iOS 4 and iPad? Why launching an iPad that you know it won't be fine with iOS 4 after 5 months (regarding multitasking obviously)?

It's like Apple would have launched the iPhone 3G, knowing that it wouldn't have enough RAM for the iPhone OS 3.

This is the antithesis of Apple's design philosophy. They use SD cards for temporary media access, not for additional storage capacity.

That's exactly what I'd use it for. I'd reserved built-in memory for apps. Movies (each memory card holding a different genre:cool:), photos (you gotta keep the safe photos away from the NSFW stuff:eek:) and music on memory cards.

You won't see this as long as Steve Jobs is running Apple Inc.

Dat tru.:(:(:( I appreciate the less is more approach most of the time, but sometimes MOAR is more.:)

If selling a 7" iPad offers a larger profit margin, Appe will sell it. And it seems like Apple can't make the 9.7" fast enough. Why sit on your hands offering a product you have trouble producing while you can make a different product with a possible larger profit margin?

A 7-inch iPad could be a good move, but I really hope that Apple won't launch a new 9.7" iPad with more RAM and a faster processor after 5-6 months after the first iPad.

These types of comments make zero sense. Apple will not be coming out with a new 9.7" iPad 5-6 months after its initial launch. The 7 incher is a different/new product. People with a 9.7" will not be "getting screwed" because you own a 9.7" inch screen, which many people on here seem to prefer over a 7 incher anyways. Are any early iPad adopters going to also "feel screwed" when the new iPod Touch comes out? If not, then you shouldn't feel any kick in the ass with a 7 incher.

Nooo Don't Do It!!!

The iPad screen is the perfect size now because when it's in Landscape mode the keyboard is the same size as a full sized keyboard and your able to type with all your fingers at the same speed as a real keyboard - look I'm doing it right now! If the screen was any smaller I would have to type with only my thumbs and this message would take me 10x longer to type. Not just that but when your web browsing propped up in landscape mode it's just like a touchscreen laptop. Apple did a lot of research on making the screen the right size and reselution, its perfect for what its meant to do.

The iPad will eventually replace the laptop and it needs to be this exact size; being big enough to type but yet small enough to be more portable then a laptop.

Are you kidding? You want to retard technological progress to protect an investment that is already obsolete? I want Apple to revise their product lines to maintain a competitive advantage, not to please people who think they are making an investment when they buy a piece of technology.

IT'S NOT AN INVESTMENT - IT'S A TOOL!

Would you have had the same opinion if you had never seen the retina display?
Yeah - I thought it before I ever saw the retina display. It's not that it looks bad, but rather in a device that size I'd want more resolution otherwise the screen size is wasted - not for everyday tasks, maybe, but for things like RDP, 1024x768 is a lot less than you can get on a 9.7" screen (or, alternatively, 7" is big enough for that resolution)
On a slightly different tangent, I'd much prefer a widescreen display too

March – iPad2 with retina display and facetime

FAIL.

An iPad with retina resolution wouldn't work...or work very well. Try again.
They might up the resolution, but NOT to a retina display unless the size of the screen was greatly reduced, which then effects the memory and battery for the giant processing power, thus it's going counter to the idea of an iPad because it would need repowering every 4 hours.
