Here's Jony Ive's opinion on this rumor:

yea right. Apple isn't going down to $250. $299 absolute minimum for ipad. The premium is part of the Apple 'tude, they're not going to stoop to budget level products

for once, please give Digitimes some credit for reporting the supply-chain rumor on the 7-inch mini iPad months ago...

Thank you for mentioning the iPod touch at $199. It seems all the re-treads of this rumor forget this exists, making the price point of the rumor ridiculous. Such a device would be at least $349 currently in my estimation.

The ipod Touch which hasn't been updated in a year and a half....

I honestly think that it is possible they are phasing out the touch and going to try to market the 7" ipad to the same market they aimed the ipod touch at. It would make a lot of sense (try to get them into ipads now.. the touch before was an entry thing for the iphone).

Why not? If they still maintain a huge profit margin it would be good business sense. They corner the entire market, high and low.

A 249 price tag would be good but a 200 price tag would seriously hurt the kindle fire market and blow up the android phablet market.

Apples 4th quarter holiday sales could be insane. It is funny but in mobile almost all of apples competitors have stopped trying to take on head on. They try to differentiate themselves so people might view it as a different category of product. Such an offering at such a price would blow up all those companies trying to get around apple.

200 sounds so low for what would likely be a high quality device but few thought an iPad could sell for 499 either.

Apple will have a fragmentation issue if they are not careful.

A 7 inch retina iPad would add another resolution for Apps to support. It can't have the Iphone4 resolution since iPhone use 3:2 display and iPad 4:3.

If all devices are released we will have:
Iphone 2g/3g/3gs resolution
Iphone 4/4S
Iphone gen 6 with larger screen (a larger screen without bumped resolution is stupid/something that Android would do)
Ipad 1/2
Ipad 3

Six different resolutions. Not as bad as other platforms, but there are many apps today that is not scaled over the original iPhone resolution.

BTW. If a 7 inch Ipad is released, its another evidence for that Steve Jobs Apple is gone, and Tim Cooks Apple is here. Instead of creating the best products possible and make money, its all about making money.
The 7 inch iPad only has to use 1024x768 and it's fine.

I agree. I don't think Apple has to worry about display fragmentation. The bigger app developers will quickly update their apps to scale depending on the device instead of using fixed points.

Android fragmentation is because you have some devices running 2.1,2.2,2.3,3.0,4.0 and these are new devices at that, then you have them with anywhere from 256mb to 1gig and 600mhz to quad cores. That is fragmentation

$200 would destroy the market for the current iPad, as well. Apple won't want to lowball itself; the company could experience a massive reduction in profits as a result, unless sales skyrocketed (if you cut the cost of making an iPad by 10% by having a smaller screen, but cut the price by 60%, then your margin is reduced from $300/unit to $20/unit, assuming that the current iPads cost $200 to make, so you would have to sell 15 times as many to have the same net profit). If Apple sold a RETINA 7" iPad for $200, it would have to drop the price of the current iPad to $300. IMO this is not going to happen in 2012, and likely not in 2013, at least not at such an insane price point.

Yeah, they won't even have to update for it either, it'll just work.

Yeah I think the display and worrying about causing problems is being over blown

In my opinion iPod Touch is almost a useless product.
Of course you are 100% wrong. My little niece and nephew use their iPod Touches all the time. The do NOT need cellphones. But they do enjoy playing games, watching videos, listening to music....all of the things that ARE quite useful for kids on an iPod Touch. They've even used it for fun making Skype calls. Just because YOU find it useless doesn't mean the device is useless.

Scared for my job

I work at Barnes & Noble as the "Digital Sales Lead," and if this 7 in iPad were to come out, even at a price point above $300, I would be out of a job. There's no way I could sell enough NOOK devices at that point to save my job. It could very likely end up being the main reason B&N stores go under, which would lose over 40,000 people their jobs. I'd have to sell my home and move my family in with my parents until I find a new job because I wouldn't be able to afford to pay my mortgage without a job, which I haven't been able to find a replacement or backup for the past 6 months. This really worries me.

I don't buy it. There is no market for a 7" tablet. There is for a 7" ereader (Kindle Fire), but not for a tablet.
You may be unfamiliar with a certain segment of the population. We call them "children".
Ours arrives tomorrow. With an SD card to up the storage to something usable. If there was a 7" iPad, it would be an iPad in that box.

Still have my doubts
I can't see Apple pricing at that point
And while there may be a market, it doesn't really make sense to compete against itself

I think they have to do it.

I just returned from Shenzhen and there are many clone pads with dual sims that cater well to people from Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and these things are priced around $120.00 or so. Can't remember the name. I think it's a copy of the Galaxy actually haha!

I wouldn't normally blink an eye at this, but because they are so cheap, a lot of people in China are going for this.

Apple is the most desired iPad and iPhone in Shenzhen, but there are so many copies of iPhones for $100.00 (very poor quality of course, but still amazing for $100.00). It's just nuts.

Imagine a world where another company besides Apple had any vision whatsoever! lol! So many copies and such a giant effort being made just to copycat!

A 7" iPad would be a very good idea, and with retina display I think it could be fine.

People in China (this is a generalization of course - not trying to offend), have smaller hands and this could also figure into the popularity of these 7" iPad clones in addition to the purely price based buyer decision.

So yeah Apple bring it on!

I'd love a 7" iPad for reading and playing games on the bus. I love the bigger one, but that generally stays at home for Internet and games on the sofa. Bring it on!
